Engel status UPDATED 11/22: Rumors confirmed, torn ACL

I guess one angle I had not really looked at initially is if he feels he can do enough he might try to play on it given that this is the end of his football career (assuming he doesn't play arena or something like that). Seems like it would be pretty unprecedented for a WR to play with a torn ACL but in this crazy year we could just add it to the list of unprecedented occurrences and call it a day. Will add a nice subtext to the eventual Disney movie that will be made about this season :cool02:

Gophers really have an issue keeping their #1 receivers through a whole season. Decker, AJ Barker, Engel...

Seems disrespectful to put that name in the middle of Decker and Engel. Not a classy move.

Further aggravation of the original knee injury would probably be the primary concern. For example, he may have just torn his ACL the first time, however further play on an unstable joint may lead to cumulative trauma if there is any cartilage damage and/or a bone bruise (which there usually is), or if he's unlucky, he may tear additional structures while playing on it (meniscal tear, MCL tear). In theory, wearing a really good, custom fit brace (like the one Trevor Mbakwe wore for awhile last year) would minimize the risk of anything SUPER serious happening. However, he'd certainly have some risks. He would also be at increased risk of injuring the same side ankle and/or hip while compensating, as well as the other knee.

The reason most people (especially athletes in a cutting sport like football) would want a surgery is to get rid of the 'pivot shift' or 'giving out' sensation in the joint while trying to cut on it. If it were his right knee, for example, he would feel the knee 'give out' on him while cutting on the right foot. This is obviously an important move for a WR to be able to make, so again I would be surprised if he opted to try to play through the injury, but it's possible.

To see someone continue playing so soon who has a torn ACL is a serious matter. Why risk further secondary or compensative injury?

I'd say let him sit out the last two games and wait and see come Jan 1 he is healed well enough to wear a knee brace for a bowl game. As someone who an MCL tear, that scares me. What is in his favor is he is young.

#4 will need to play great. I think he's a special player and he's as good now as McDonald was at this point.

Any idea what his 40 time is? I recall seeing he is fast. It's really tough to get a look in the league, but if he has that goal he should Gopher it.

Sorry about late response to your question. I don't know Derek's 40 yard time. I was told by someone who should know that he is one of the fastest players on this team. He also has a very good vertical jump. He worked very hard on sprints and conditioning along with Isaac Freuchte during the offseason and summer. If Derek can't go today, I look for Isaac to be featured more than before. They are both great young men!

I'm pretty confident Isaac is a great guy. I'm hoping he has the game of his life today. He's a team guy, so that might mean zero catches, but great blocking down field. Or catch a couple TDs!
