Doogie says that Saul Smith is in over his head

Here's what Booby Knight said about Saul (clipped from Big Blue History website) below:

Knight was also supportive of UK player Saul Smith, after he came under criticism by some Kentucky fans.

"And before I answer any questions I'll tell you I would take Saul Smith in a heartbeat. All that call-in bull(spit), that's ridiculous for a kid to have to put up with any crap. This is a really, really good kid. He's a kid who plays his ass off, plays harder than hell. He scrambles, scratches and scrapes. People down there ought to realize what kind of a kid this is and get off his ass because he's just a great kid. Send him up here. Damn it I'll play him Tuesday night." - Bob Knight postgame comments after Indiana beat Kentucky 83-75, December 4, 1999.

What does Dec. 4, 1999 have to do with now?

Sorry I didn't listen to the show last night Doogie,

How would you, as a member of the media, respond to this?

Quote:
Joel Maturi Spoke at a class of mine today and focused a lot on the negativity of the Twin Cities media. He said how we're the only school in the Big Ten who has to deal with reporters lashing out at coaches and players. He also mentioned that 2 players were nominated for turkey of the year by a media outlet. He was extremely appalled by that, as am I. Negativity is contagious and it seems like some are only happy when they take down others. Anyone agree with Maturi on this?

As much as I want Maturi replaced yesterday, I couldn't agree more with him. (no one is all good or all bad)

Now for the other side of things.

What if we had gotten the practice facility done? What if Jimmy Williams was coaching Trevor, Rodney, White, Iverson, Sampson, etc.?

Recruiting would have been better. We would have a million or two more. We would have been/be final four contenders.

FOT: Saul has been in many gyms, and is heavily involved in recruiting.

Roland Brooks: Bleed started the thread... Nadine or Chris brought it up on-air last night... I provided my opinion, which was 30 seconds of my 2 hour show... at no point did I insinuate that the reason just about a full 4 years in Tubby has yet to finish top-4 in the Big Ten, or win a NCAA tournament game, is because of Saul. Simply suggested when asked if a shake-up should come that he's the one I would replace.

Once again, clueless.

NCAA allows 3 Gopher coaches to recruit on the road - Tubby, Jirsa, and Taylor.

Look it up in NCAA recruiting rules, bubba.

I hope you get fired, Doogie.

Diehard: this isn't the first time Joel has suggested this. I actually opened the show with this very topic. Maturi makes a ton of $$ for a reason. When you are the leader of a Big Ten athletic department, you open yourself up to scrutiny.

Many, including Tubby, thought the facility would be done by now. Unless someone cuts a check for $10 mil., it's not happening anytime soon. Why did Joel suggest verbally that it would be now? That's a subject I should ignore when hosting a talk-show?

There was a breakdown somewhere that resulted in Williams getting a lot of $$... when hosting a talk-show, I shouldn't wonder aloud what the heck happened that resulted in a public institution having to cut a big check?

As for if Williams was here... he was with the Wolves for a couple years... I'm not as convinced as you are that the big men would be all that better if he were here.

Once again, clueless.

It took a 5 second search to find this blurb from a previous GH thread:

per Monter:

Cory Joseph, a 6-foot-3 junior guard from Henderson (NV) Findlay College Prep and younger brother of Minnesota freshman Devoe Joseph, played in front of Gopher assistant coach Saul Smith Monday night in the Flyin' to the Hoop Tournament in Dayton.

Cory Joseph played all 32 minutes and finished with twelve points, three rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot in their 66-62 win over Huber Heights (OH) Wayne Monday night.

FOT - I'm pretty sure it's three coaches can be out recruiting AT ONE TIME. For example, Tubby, Saul and Jirsa could be out, but then Vince could not be, or Tubby, Jirsa, Vince and not Saul, or any other combination of three out, one not. Esposito cannot recruit as Director of BB Ops.

Saul Smith absolutely travels and recruits. He was instrumental in Devoe's recruitment, and others.

Yes. At Tulsa, Georgia, and Kentucky. Not EVERY year but most years.

The Gophers were 2nd in B10 scoring offense in 2010. That's 2nd out of 11 teams.

Points scored is not a true reflection of a half court offense. Tubby's system is predicated on pressure defense and many transition baskets. It's the half court offense that some people question.

Friend of Tubby - stalker and defender all things Smith family related. what a moron.

Wrong.

Might want to think twice about proclaiming someone clueless in such a strong manner.

tjgopher: we all make mistakes... I got destroyed last night when I was convinced strongly in an animated conversation with my wife that something was a certain way... she proved that I was way wrong.

I don't doubt your 'sources' Doogie though I question who would be willing to bad-mouth him other then a disgruntled player. But this is the entire staff's fourth year. All of the sudden Saul's over his head and this is a big problem. BS.

Never said it was a "big problem"... go back and listen if Nick Riddley put the podcast on 1500espn.com... Nadine or Chris brought up the idea of a shake-up on the staff... we went around, each spending 30 sec. on the topic... I suggested that I would move on from Saul, nothing more, nothing less... never insinuated that he is anywhere near the main reason for the underachieving ways this particular year.

Maybe your wife should post of GH.;)

Kind of like my past relationship with my ex??? I always got out-voted 1 to 1.

There's one thing we need to remember about a lot of columnists, beat writers, talking heads, sports radio shock-jocks, sports-radio wannabees and their ilk. ... they have no problem dishing it out and criticizing quite often mercilessly coaches, players & GM's simply for shock value, but if a fan/rube dares criticize them or call them out when they are factually wrong (i.e. Mackey, I didn't know him from a hole in the ground but I didn't take offense to his Gopher opinion piece awhile back), they whistle a different tune. A defensive lot they are, for the most part. Souhan comes to mind first in that respect.

Our offense was fine before nolen got hurt? Really. Has Tubby ever had a good offense? I know you are a huge Tubby backer, but cmon dude.

In Tubby's first year, we finished 4th in the BT in scoring. Three years ago we finished 5th. Last year we finished 2nd in the conference in scoring. Is that not good enough for you? Even with all the injuries and transfers we are currently 6th in the BT in scoring ahead of wisconsin and michigan st. Since Nolen got hurt, we are averaging about 3 points per game less in BT play.

As usually, you're just stating things without actually looking at the facts.

Stalker of Tubby, which you are based on the stories: Nadine or Chris, can't remember for sure, brought up the question of a shake-up w/ the staff, and I simply stated my opinion, not dodging the question. Talk directly to people who have been around Saul, whether out recruiting, out in social circles, etc. Report back to me what they say.

I have no problem with media sharing their opinion or their sources opinion but when you dabble in opinion and not fact your gonna get disagreement. However, when a paid member of the media comes on here and taunts a fan for disagree/critisizing their article that's when it gets alittle old.

Doogie, as a member of the media you signed up for this. If you want to defend you opinion awesome, go for it. However, when you come on here calling people names and trying to insult unpaid fans, you lose all credibility in my honest opinion.

Its called professionalism, give it a whirl.

I know FOT is over the top....

more than a little, in his support of coach. But I have to agree with him here....Doogie is the one in over his head when it comes to intelligent sports commentary.

I frankly don't know how he stays on a payroll. I've hear he's a nice guy, and that must be it.

I cringe to have him as the editorial voice representing Gopebr fans in the star/tribue.

I will absolutely take the heat for this one - I brought it up, and it's something I've been thinking about for a long time. Why? Because I think Tubby is a good coach, but I don't think he is an offensive genius. What good leaders do are surround themselves with people who compensate for their weaknesses, and since I want to keep Tubby - it's a natural through progression to think, let's keep him and shake up his staff. This way, you can bring in an assistant from a program that knows how to put up points and they can bring that value.

Doogie going to Saul as as 1st option is also very natural. He, by no means, blamed our losses on Saul. He's simply the most inexperienced member of the staff, and when looking at Taylor - he's rock solid, Jirsa was a HC, and that leaves Saul's spot. What goes on beyond close doors and what his contributions are - who know besides the staff? But he's certainly the spot most would think to replace if you want to bring in an offensively minded coach.

Jeez, why would you try to point blame on the coaches son who is the 3rd assistant coach on the team? It doesn't make much sense. They lost their senior point guard to injury and Joseph decided he didn't want to play by the rules and took his baby rattle to the Pac-10. Good riddance. I'd rather lose without him this year than to win with him and have his attitude around the team. Where did they lose with Nolan, at Ohio State, at Michigan State and at Wisconsin. If they would have had Nolan for the whole Big Ten season, they would have probably finished 4th in the conference and had a top 5 or 6 seed. It bothers me when media people in the cities rip the team, especially when they could care less about the program like Souhan or Barreiro. Doogie I'm more disappointed in because he does seem to care about the program. It amazes me that some of these people become experts on Big Ten basketball when they have played a combined 5 minutes of basketball past 7th grade. A shot at Saul Smith....really? It makes it seem like you have an agenda against the current coach!!! Do you have such a short memory that you have already forgotten what it was like under Monson? Tubby is classy and represents Minnesota well. He is rebuilding a program Monson nearly destroyed. Back the team, because Tubby has them on firm footing, they are improving, and the program is in good shape.

This year actually kind of reminds me of the year before we won the Big Ten with Bobby Jackson. Jackson was injured and we lost to Tulane I think by about 30 in the NIT at The Barn. This team has gone through a lot of adversity. I get as upset as anyone when Sampson isn't strong with the ball or Iverson almost seems to block his own shot. But realize that these kids are 18-22 years old. They don't have their leader point guard playing with them right now. In the Big Ten, it is hard to get off shots, especially if the defense doesn't want you taking them. Hoff is finding tat out right now as defenses want to make sure he doesn't get off an open shot. If I have a complaint about Tubby, it is that he doesn't seem to recruit enough shooters. I've only watched Coleman play once, but he seems to score most of his points on layups or drives. But like I've said, I'm sure Tubby knows a little more than I do, since he has won a National Championship and had several 20 win seasons. I have watched Tyus Jones play a couple of times against my nephew's team, and he is the real deal. Watching him play, I can't believe he is only a 9th grader. I will probably get to watch him one more time in regions in a few weeks. I guess he has a 5th grade brother who plays up on a 7th grade "A" team that is undefeated. He will probably be playing with his brother when Tyus is a senior.

A lot of what you said is true, GL. But why specifically name Saul? Take it out on me, cause I don't give a rat's azz, I'll just have a beer and laugh. :)

3 pages in and no one has specifically addressed how Saul is in over his head. Tells you all you need to know...

I would like to see someone with more offensive expertise on the staff, but I don't think Saul is the issue.

I'm also not convinced that being an offensive guru for Tubby would be a great job. He tends to substitute based on defensive performance and issues playing time based on defensive trust. That doesn't always lead to the best offensive players getting significant run on the floor.

3 pages in and no one has specifically addressed how Saul is in over his head. Tells you all you need to know...

You said the same thing I did, FTB, only you were more discreet and politically correct than I. That is why I said "Take it out on me."!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Doogie was looking in the mirror. He is (pure and simple) a complete idiot. Pitiful.

Bobby Knight routinely praised Saul Smith at UK and offered to take him as a transfer to IU.

If FOT says Doogie is in over his head then by the transitive property FOT would have to be in over his head as a fan for Saul Smith to be in over his head.

Are we really getting this worked up when one our local media people ends up saying something that reveals them to be a hack???? Come on FoT...hard to get this mad when a dog pisses on a tree...its what dogs do...just like twin city media hacks...they say unsubstantiated crap and pretend like they have a source so they aren't held accountable...Doogie prob spoke to the janitor at the barn who has an ax to grind with Saul because he misses the bowl when he pisses...if its even that close to a real source.
