Doogie says that Saul Smith is in over his head

GopherinPhilly a direct quote in this thread from GopherLady with regards to Saul "But he's certainly the spot most would think to replace if you want to bring in an offensively minded coach."

if you are calling Doggie a hack for saying it then you must include GopherLady in your calling people hacks since she is insinuating too.

why do people assume if he was a scrappy basketball player in 99 that he would be a good assistant coach? I don't see the comparison there. He isn't playing for our basketball team. The Bobby Knight quote has no relevance.

Did Doogie say that in his opinion Saul is in over his head or did he really say his "sources" say Saul is in over his head. If he said it was his "sources", then my guess is that Doogie really feels that way and he is just a coward and does not have the groin to say it himself. My "sources" in the Twin Cities media have told me that Doogie is lazy at his job and that there was a reason that he was on the chopping block at KFAN. And yes, my "sources" are real. He will never be anything more than a 3rd to 4th tier reporter in this town. He has been here how long?? Does anyone see him climbing the ladder of sports reporters in this town so far? 'Nuff said.

Gopjherlady gave her opinion....Doogie the hack insinuated a source that stated the opinion...if a columnist wants to say how they feel, the get to...but a hack is one that lacks their own convictions and uses unamed sources for their opinion...Doogie is a hach IMO.

I agree with balds in that I don't think Saul being in over his head, if that were true, would have a huge impact on the team from an X's and 0's standpoint. He's clearly 4th in command behind Tubby and Jirsa/Taylor, so the problems clearly start someplace else. I don't think replacing Saul with another assistant with a similar level of stroke/power in the program would make much of a difference on the court.

Who works with the big men. I just haven't seen alot of improvement in Sampson and Iverson. Iverson has gone backwards this year, Sampson is shooting the ball better, but he hasn't developed any post moves to speak of. I take Hagen as an example, he progressed each of his four years, I don't see it in this team.

I think Doogie was looking in the mirror. He is (pure and simple) a complete idiot. Pitiful.

Bobby Knight routinely praised Saul Smith at UK and offered to take him as a transfer to IU.

So because a players game was praised that makes him a good coach. If that is the case maybe we should hire Shaq as the next coach, or Magic Johnson or Isaiah Thomas. Wait that has already been tried before and failed miserably. Saul may be a good coach, I don't know and neither do you, as much as you think you are part of Tubbys inner circle. Your argument that because he was a decent player that he therefore has to be a good coach is weak at best.

Jirsa works with the big men. I thought both Iverson and Sampson would be better than the best we saw from Hagen (his senior year) by this time. I don't know if that's a reflection on Jirsa or a reflection on Ralph and Colton. I feel like Colton is a worse player than he was last year and that Ralph has improved his jump shot, but becoming less effective on the post and even less aggressive than in the past.

I would like to see someone with more offensive expertise on the staff, but I don't think Saul is the issue.

I'm also not convinced that being an offensive guru for Tubby would be a great job. He tends to substitute based on defensive performance and issues playing time based on defensive trust. That doesn't always lead to the best offensive players getting significant run on the floor.

Well - from everything I've heard it would be Jirsa or Saul (not that it would ever happen) because Vince Taylor seems to be the most solid member of his staff.

That is a good point - if that guru was not allowed to have an input on decisions, and players are not given PT because of their ability to score, it really won't make much of a difference.

It is Jirsa - and there is a lot of room for improvement with the big men this year. I too think Iverson is moving backward - he had some really solid games last year and I expected big things from him.

Colt

I quite honestly can not remember when Colt last made a shot from outside 4 feet.

The other amazing thing is that FOT has yet to show up here again after being called out on his lack of knowledge of recruiting rules.

We need a big man on the staff to teach the big men. I know Kansas has Danny Manning on staff who specifically works with their bigs and has done a wonderful job. Get a guy who knows how to teach post offense and defense to these guys.

Only 3 Coaches Can Recruit At One Time

Period.

The university can change which 3 but only 3 can recruit on the road.

Saul had a successful HS career in NE Georgia (POY), at UK (1 NCAA title, 3 SEC titles and 3 SECT championships), and NBDL (2 years).

He has had a successful coaching career at UK (grad assistant in 2004) and Tenn Tech (3 years after that). He is the 3rd assistant at Minnesota whereas he was higher up the ladder at TT.

Wrong.

Might want to think twice about proclaiming someone clueless in such a strong manner.

Only 3 coaches are allowed to recruit on the road. The school can designate which 3 (and this can change from time to time).

Prior to coming to Gold Country, Smith served as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech under head coach Mike Sutton from 2004-07. Smith was involved in all phases of the program, including player development, recruiting, organization, on-floor coaching and academics. When Sutton was stricken with Guillian Barre Syndrome, Smith assisted associate head coach Steve Payne with guiding the Golden Eagles to two of the most successful seasons in school history. In his three seasons at Tennessee Tech, the team never finished below third place in the conference, including a league championship during 2004-05.

Smith lettered four years at Kentucky under his father, head coach Tubby Smith, and started at point guard for the Wildcats in each of his final two seasons. He was part of winning three SEC Championships, three SEC Tournament titles and one NCAA National Championship. He also captained an SEC All-Star team that went 4-1 vs. the Japanese Olympic team.

Smith ranks 10th all-time in Kentucky basketball history with 363 assists. Smith led the Wildcats in assists during both the 1999-2000 and the 2000-01 seasons and in steals with 51 during the 2000-01 season. Smith played in 143 games during his Wildcat career, starting 70 times. He finished his career with 730 points, while never missing a practice.

After his Kentucky career, Smith was invited to the Houston Rockets’ summer camp, before spending two years playing for the NBDL’s Columbus Riverdragons.

Smith spent the 2003-04 season on the Kentucky coaching staff, while completing his bachelor’s degree in economics.

Smith was named the Northeast Georgia Player of the Year by the Athens Daily News as a high school senior at Clarke Central High School. An all-state player, he averaged 20.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists as a senior.

BTW sent e-mail to friend of K-St staff this AM.

I'll post his reply. He KNOWS the rules. All staff members must pass test on NCAA recruiting rules.

Once again, clueless.

NCAA allows 3 Gopher coaches to recruit on the road - Tubby, Jirsa, and Taylor.

Look it up in NCAA recruiting rules, bubba.

I hope you get fired, Doogie.

See the bold print. That is wrong. Admit it. And saying you'd like someone to get fired is about the most classless thing you've ever said.

The K-St staffer confirmed that all 4 are allowed to recruit but only 3 at one time. He KNOWS the NCAA rules.

I do hope Doogie gets fired from ESPN 1500 and hope he gets HIRED to coach the Gophers next season.

Which is exactly what I said. You were wrong. Your K-State "friend" proved that you were wrong. Why can you not admit it?

FOT,

Love how you constantly try to twist things rather than just admit that you were wrong.

It's OK to not be perfect. Nobody is.

But the name-calling gets a little tiresome.

No name calling. I think Doogie should be hired as Div I coach somewhere. It's so easy even he can do it.

FOT, if Jirsa has the flu and remains in Minnesota during a road trip and Tubby wants Saul to go check out a recruit, is he allowed to? I am a little bit confused given some of the things you said...
