doogie already starting tubby to ga tech talk

Yep. That's I all I've done. Never did a ton behind-the-scenes. Never wrote for multiple sites, including cbssports.com... never was a host, never anchored at two places, just a button-pusher. Easy for you to hide behind a moniker.
Here's an invitation: come down to KSTP tomorrow night... I'll be on-air from 6-8... we can have a civil discussion.

And the quasi-threatening use your own name/say it to my face BS starts again.

I think it's funny that people rip Doogie. He is just doing what a lot of us do on here....except he gets paid. Like he said in an earlier post, there is no need to make things personal. I have met Doogie and he is a really nice and humbel guy. Does it matter that he is bringing this up now? He would get ripped if it was in March.

Plus he wears sweatpants to basketball games.

(not speculation)

Doogie, a struggling journalist needs a niche. You have a knack for rubbing people the wrong way on posting forums. Think pro-wrestling & embrace the bad guy role. Become the man people love to hate, it sells. My .02

True story... had my father in-law's tickets... was NOT working that night... had warm-up pants on... next time, come say hi.

Generally, businesses have an 'error and ommission' policy that will cover thier Board Members/Management Employees if they get sued. I'm sure the U has something similar. Specifically in this case, I dont' know if this is the coverage that applies, but I know that they already said the Williams verdict was covered, I imagine the same would apply the golf thing. Now, will the cost of this coverage sky-rocket if they have to pay out two settlements in a year? I'm sure it will.

Thanks for the info. Cost goes up or they say no more coverage.

Okay, lets be honest. This is every sports journalists job. Half of what they say is total BS. Lets not hold it against him.

That being said, there is no way that this weak rumor warrants 7 pages of discussion.

It is not going to happen.

While not being Bob Costas or Al Michaels or Jim Rome, how am I struggling? Get to do a bunch of different stuff in every forum imaginable, and work for an A+ company with A+ individuals.
I love wrestling... but too much of a lover to embrace a bad-guy role.

Relax Doogie. You are opening yourself up for criticism. Just tell people that you are doing your job by bringing these things up, because that is the truth, and it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why you are responding to emotionally incensed fans who are not in your profession.

Wow. This is one petty thread.

Just because we as a fanbase are collectively exhausted and burned out by the annual "Tubby to random BCS school" rumors every year, doesn't make Doogie's initial position incorrect.

The initial description in this thread of the radio broadcast doesn't make it sound like it was tossed out as "breaking news". Its just simply speculation . . . and speculation on a very real issue which could (hate to break it to you all) end up much the way Doogie hypothesized.

Of course we don't want to think about it - espescially not in December. But the practice facility (or lack thereof), Tubby's extension, and Tubby's attractiveness to other programs, are all legit points of discussion about this team. Sure, many would rather we all focus on the positives we've seen this year, but that doesn't mean this discussion out of bounds.

And not that Doogie needs any defending (he's a big boy), but someone calling a dude out for what he wears to a game, or who he used to share the airwaves with, is a pretty poor way for them to prove their point about what is or isn't an appropriate topic of discussion.

Duly noted. Chat closed on my end.

Whoa, whoa. You're leaving without answering how you get away with "right before first" when you and your boy Schmit ran with the Fedora stuff which was completely proven wrong in about 11 minutes? Any tiny bit of fact checking revealed that to be false. (Hence pulling the tweet shortly after posted like, oh I don't know, your whipping boy Brewster for instance.)

Are you really sticking with "right before first?" If you are, it seems you've forgotten the motto on more than one occasion, this being the most obvious example. (Of course you could go with, "I gave Schmit Kill and any other stuff he was right on but not Fedora.")

Just admit it. You like to throw out a ton of stuff (which is fine) and you frankly only care if about 5-10% of it ends up being true because that is the way "sports reporting" is going in the twitter age. What really matters is being first 1 time because it allows you to be wrong another 100 times. You get to say, "hey, remember when I was first with Jerry Kill?"

And sports is the best because you can say, "Tubby talked to Georgia Tech last year," and nobody could ever prove you right or wrong. You don't reveal sources. If Tubby denies it you'd say he is lying. "Why would Tubby admit to talking to another school," you'd say. It's the perfect career. Even a weather man is held accountable more.

Creating news stories. I'm burned out with manufactured news after the football search. Presumptuous story lines have become Doogies M.O., but I like him.
-Hewitt is the coach
-Don't know if GT wants a 60 year old coach, especially if it's such a good job. How many years since his last tournament victory, 5,6 years?
-Don't know if he wants to start over and this stage in his career

Here's what we do know:
-He's be promised a facility that hasn't seen any mortar
-He's got a kick ass team with 2 seniors and 2 studs coming in, and a nice frosh class.

I don't care too much anymore if he leaves:
-U will realize it needs a facility
-U claims to be willing to pay coaches in the top 20 range for right coach

Most of all, this will be likely the top job in the nation open in regards to winning immediatly, and a step up out of the gate from Georgia Tech for the following reasons:
Sampson-Mbwake-Hollins-Joseph-Hollins and a bench of Iverson, Eliason, Walker, Osenieks, Williams, Armelin, Ahanmesi, and Coleman

Oh good. Now that Doogie is gone, we can talk about him. (Sarcasm)

I realize that he is one of those guys that likes to throw a lot of stuff out there with the idea that he is bound to be right occasionally. But I wish he would hold himself to a higher standard than that. It's hard to take him seriously with any of the things he says because he is so quick to throw stuff out there.

am allowing myself one post regarding this pseudo journalist per season for fb and bb. Pompous, arrogant, looking as much for a fight as attention. Already wasted more time on this post than the self proclaimed sports pro is worth.

Whatever you think of Doogie's specific coverage, I think we should at least appreciate that he covers/discusses the Gophers. In that regard he does a lot more then anyone in MSP outside of the dedicated beat writers. For that, he should get credit on this site, even if you don't like what he has to say.

I an agree with the idea that Tubby leaving is no longer an apocalyptic event. Even in 2007, if we hadn't gotten Tubby, I think we would have had our choice of Flip Saunders, Rick Majerus and possibly Sean Miller. I'd like to think they'd have all succeeded here too (Flip a bit of an unknown.)

Bottom-line is that unlike football, Minnesota is a Top 30 basketball job and will probably always be able to land a good coach. That's also part of the reason Tubby's not all that likely to leave. GT is certainly a job on the same level as MN, but if it's 'better' it's not better by much. So unless Tubby or Donna really, really hate it here, there's not an overwhelming reason to leave.

He's going to say that he's leaving? He doesn't want a practice facility? He will at least use leaving as a hammer to get what he wants here at MN. Want to buy some leftover Enron stock I can track down? I know you're a die-hard who has a hard time grasping anything that might be remotely negative about your favorite team, but read the realities I listed above. The talk will occur until Tubby's requests are met.

Enron? No longer exists. Tubby needs to talk with a few investors and underwriters in town to understand that business is not in the mood to support athletic facilities at the moment when they have not invested in their own for the last 2 years. Wait until the end of next year before the practice facility gets mentioned by the U. Doogie, I think your theory is sound. I just don't think it matters. Thge only thing I can use from the story is whether or not Maturi has a succession plan in place or not for Mr. Smith.

Love Doogie...

Like most talk meisters, he's negative and fatuous enough to create a lot of entertaining flash in the Hole.

Although he's probably right, if GT offers $5-MM/yr, Tubby's likely gone no matter how many gold-inlay toilets and shower stalls are promised in the practice facility.

Correct me where I'm wrong, but didn't he simply say "If Hewitt gets fired, and if there is no movement on a practice facility at the U, the speculation that Tubby could go to Atlanta will begin?"

Is that what he said? If that's it I fail to see what exactly is wrong about that or why everybody is so up in arms here. If that's how it goes down, that is exactly what will happen. Not that he WILL go to Atlanta, but that the talk will start.

I don't get it.

And if Hewitt doesn't get fired and Maturi promises a new practice facility (again) the speculation that Tubby might go to Atlanta will not begin. And if it rains tomorrow you might get wet and if it doesn't you might not get wet.

Although he's probably right, if GT offers $5-MM/yr
Never going to happen.

There isn't a single college basketball coach making close to that kind of money, even Crazy Dollar Calipari only makes $4 mil/year, Coach K is close to $4 mil/year, Izzo makes $3.5 mil/year.

No offense to Tubby, but he won't be getting close to their money.

No need for hypotheticals, Doogie will have the inside poop on this. The next speculation? What if GT has a mystery Atlanta sugar-daddy?

They'll need one just to pay-off Hewitt let alone pay Tubby. Frankly, if we have some success this year (think Sweet 16) there's no reason the U can't give Tubby a pretty nice raise in that contract extension they've been working on for 10 months. Afterall we have 'the budget' to pay our football coach $3 million and we only ended up paying him $1.1. As of 2009, I believe Tubby was still in the Top 10 of highest paid coaches. I'm sure he's fallen out of that now, but we can certainly afford to bring him back up there in his new deal.

Despite Joel's 'woe is me' attitude every time there's a new rumor we're not Butler trying to keep Brad Stevens here. We can match any rational offer any school like GT, UVa or Auburn wants to make if we really want to.

Every once in a while everyone needs to be reminded to just live in the moment. I have to remind myself that with all of the excitement of the recruits-- enjoy what we have now, the recruits will have their time when they get here. Reporters/talk radio personalities always seems to get ahead of themselves just when we should be enjoying success. A prime example is the Twins. Just about the time they wrap up the division, the talk of how they are going to miss Thome and Pavano and list all the other free agents starts. And with the Gophers good start this year do we really need to talk about spring job openings now? It's not like GT actually needs a new coach yet.

Doogie definitely appears to be one of those guys who can't seem to enjoy the moment. When I listened to him and Joe Schmidt do the Twins post-game call-in show last season, he could not get off the topic of the Twins next-year roster while the Twins were in the middle of a playoff run. Speculation is fine, including speculation on Tubby, but there is a time and place for everything and his speculation is often very premature.
