doogie already starting tubby to ga tech talk

Maturi promised a practice facility to Tubby , not the first time he has set unrealistic expectations. When are we going to get an Athletic dept that supports revenue producing sports as the priority of the program? Nothing against baseball and their new stadium, but that program cannot stand on its own financially. From a Priority standpoint, basketball in more important and a higher priority to the University and to the State of MN than baseball. With limited resources in a business situation, different projects shift in priorities. It is clear that the basketball facility is needed. It is unfortunate we have such a weak leader who pretends to leads the department. I have no idea if Tubby will leave or not, however, a practice facility is needed to get this program to the next level. This was promised to Tubby and it is time to get this project rolling, NOW!

Didn't read the entire thread, but if Doogie is even mentioning Tubby and Georgia Tech in the same breath then I feel very safe that Tubby is going nowhere. Just look how he botched up and made himself look like a fool with the football search. And before you respond to this and ask how you botched up the football search Doogie, look at peoples' responses to you on GI and GH during the football search. You were laughed at.

There is a reason why 90% of the posts on here and GI are negative toward you. Because you bring up things to stir the the pot that don't have any relevance at the time whatsoever. You call yourself a "journalist" and that you can say whatever you want, which you can, but don't expect Gopher fans to just sit here and read the stuff you write and comes out of your mouth without taking some heat when many of your points, rumors, ramblings, etc. are NEGATIVE toward the Gophers athletic program.

"botched up" the football search... when Rivals guy Tom Dienhart had Hoke out, I always had him in... Sumlin was mentioned prominently early... I was all over that for 2 weeks there was no contact, so it was becoming very likely that he wouldn't be coming... quoted pres. Bruininks five days before the hire... had a full Q&A w/ Bruininks soon after the Brew move... had the Mike Leach info. very early (that there was no chance)... had Tubby endorsing Fulmer early... then on Sat., had that a new coach was coming in the next 48 hours, and helped Schmit break the story.
Who do you think was calling me regularly for nuggets the last 2 months? The GI guys. Again, before you spew BS, know what you're talking about.

Come on guys. I don't love the genre that is talk radio, but these guys have to fill up time. I didn't listen but if Doogie attached the if's that he is saying, I don't think it is out of line. I'd rather someone advances rumors that get a strong denial and puts it all to rest now instead of on the eve of the tourney like the last couple of years. Doogie is not out of line on this if it was presented in the light that he is suggesting it was.

Whether you agree with Doogie's style or not, it was clear that he was one of the hardest working reporters during the search. His updates were far more accurate than guys like Tom Dienhart or most of the local reporters.

And without a doubt, KSTP radio/TV won the media battle. Cory Roufs was the only reporter who had the "Brew to be fired if we lose Purdue" scoop and Joe Schmitt ultimately had the Jerry Kill scoop. No doubt that Doogie helped along the way with their team. Yes, there were misses along the way by all, but KSTP radio/TV won the media battle.

Go Gophers!!

Where exactly did I BS? The points you made did not answer any of the points I made.

Your claim of botching up the football search, and making myself look like a fool... respectfully disagree, and laid out why. Read above.

Thanks, Bleed!

Stanley Hubbard's plane picked up Kill. I don't exactly conjure up the picture of reporters pounding the pavement digging up leads. "Hi, Joe. The plane is scheduled to go to Rockford or DeKalb. It's got to be Kill. You're welcome."

Priceless FTB! In general, a nice summation of most sports talk radio talking heads.

Ok, agree to disagree that you botched up the football search and made yourself look like a fool. If you don't think you did, than good for you, but if we polled ppl on here and GI, I don't think you'd get the results that you think you would.

Block M: Negativity? Hmmm. As my good friend Phil Mackey would say, stop the mouth breathing, and realize a) I think this year's team has a chance to be really special, and b) Tubby wants that practice facility BADLY... if there is zero progress on that front by March (we've heard that they have a site, but we've heard that now for almost a year... noticeable progress has to be made, break ground, etc.), and if Hewitt loses his job -- a possible big IF -- then Tubby's name will come up in Atlanta.
I know it's almost anti GH to talk about this big elephant in the room, but it's reality. Tubby will retire here if he gets his way, but he thought by now the facility would be done... it's on Bruininks/Maturi to get those wheels in motion.

But we're getting a BWW next to William. That's gotta help...

Love everyone on here. Otherwise, wouldn't post all the time. Love being around super passionate fans. But here's who I care most about in that regard: my editor at 1500espn.com, and my bosses at Ch. 5. They were very happy with how we reported the story for 2 straight months.

On my soon-to-be newborn son's life... we had the story 6 hours before plans were put in motion to use his plane. Not once, did anyone in our newsroom talk to Mr. Hubbard. And the persons who gave us the news, have zero to do with Mr. Hubbard.
Here's how we used our resources: after we found out through flightaware that they were using the Hubbard plane (they don't believe in blocking their tail #), we used our connections to gain access to the hangar.
No different from Ch. 9 being able to get Vikings in-studio all the time because most live 3 min. from their studio. No different from Ch. 4 gaining 1-on-1 interviews with big-time guests after they're on with CNN (those talk-backs are done at their station). Every media outlet in town takes advantage of its resources.

Gee couldn't see that answer coming.

Your bosses say you don't look like a fool to Gopher fans so you must not.

One more IF.

IF you knew what you were saying. But you don't.

Tubby will retire at Minnesota. He's 60 next May, just 5 or 6 years from retirement age.

He has family ties in VA, MD, and NC but not Atlanta.

You make a valid point. With each passing year, the liklihood of Tubby leaving goes down signficantly. First, because he doesn't strike me as a guy who will coach until he's 70 and if he only has 5-6 years left, does he really want to start over at a job that's marginally better then the one he has (at best)? Second, the level of jobs he would leave here for (Maryland, GT, etc.) are big-time enough they won't necessarily want to settle for a 60 year-old coach who's retiring in 5 years, no matter how impressive his resume is.

I think if Tubby was going to pull the escape cord, he'd have taken UVa's $3 million/year and run with it. However close he came, he didn't. The only job that has ever really concerned me since is Maryland, as I think that's Tubby's 'dream job' at this point. As long as Gary Williams sticks around a couple more seasons, I don't think Tubby's going anywhere.

All that said, I'd feel much better if I wake up tomorrow and read that there's finally a contract extension. What is the hold-up? And we do need a practice facility ASAP, whether it's for Tubby, Flip Saunders or God knows who.

Joe and Doogie were the only people following the search, they definately didn't botch it, they covered it. They never reported anything as a 'done deal' only gave their best indications. What do people want?

Joe and Doogie were the only people following the search? What fantasy land were you living in?

Why would it be stupid to suggest that Tubby would want to be in Atlanta near where multiple siblings live if MN doesn't make progress on his practice facility?
It's called selective listening... listeners do it all the time... cited the Myron info. from last March/April when there was talk of Hewitt getting fired, and how many who know Tubby thought he would take that job if they called... made the leap tonight with Ga. Tech struggling, that Hewitt could lose his job in March... and if so, AND if no progress is made on the facility front, that the rumors will start again... you don't think they will? Again, if all those factors are in play, if you don't think Tubby's name will come up in Atlanta, then I would like to sell you oceanfront property in International Falls. Admittedly, a few ifs.

Yes, we know you and yours will start those rumors again. My guess is the night before the first NCAA tournament game.

Tell me who covered it better. Max interviewed Joel a few times with no information coming out. Phil Miller had a last minute flurry of Leach info. Many of the local scribes pushed Trestman. KFAN pushed for Chryst and NFL coaches. The fast majority of information was opinion, Joe and Doogie were far more informative than any others.

It doesn't really matter who reported it more, and harder, than others. Joe and I like being aggressive, right before first, but aggressive, so we were attempting to stay on top of as much as possible. If other electronic outlets in town want to be different, that's fine by me.

Why is everyone worked up about this? It is sports talk radio. I heard PA and Judd talking about Vikings players that might leave after the season. Should we freak-out about that? Tubby's name is going to come up for every BCS opening next spring. Get used to it. Last few years we had Oregon, Virginia, GT and Maryland.

You just jealous 'cuz Maxie had the scoop first.

Doogie- It's good to be aggressive and it's good to bring up all sorts of "what if" topics. The main thing is that it be done in the context of reality. No problem with you bringing up the concern that Tubby may blow town for GT if there's no practice facility. If you think that's legit - go for it. However, be sure to couch it in reality. The reality is that he has stated he plans on being here until retirement and that he seems to like what he is building here and enjoys the area. He seems to understand that things like the practice facility take time. As long as you put things in context, I don't think most will have an issue with the discussion. People don't like it when the press creates a potential negative controversy about the home team that doesn't exist. There are enough real problems around here with our sports teams without creating new ones that aren't real. I appreciate your contributions and the Gopher coverage.
