leave it to doogie to start the tubby to ga tech talk in early december. he was at it tonight on the radio.

Doogie is from the KFAN ILK of everyday is doomsday for gopher athletics.

wow. what'd he say exactly? hopefully he comes on here and tries to justify his stupidity. he needs to consider how old tubby is and the fact that he has his family here. he'll also have all of his own recruiting classes next year. i'm not sure why doogie thinks he'd want to start all over again at his age.

Why would it be stupid to suggest that Tubby would want to be in Atlanta near where multiple siblings live if MN doesn't make progress on his practice facility?
It's called selective listening... listeners do it all the time... cited the Myron info. from last March/April when there was talk of Hewitt getting fired, and how many who know Tubby thought he would take that job if they called... made the leap tonight with Ga. Tech struggling, that Hewitt could lose his job in March... and if so, AND if no progress is made on the facility front, that the rumors will start again... you don't think they will? Again, if all those factors are in play, if you don't think Tubby's name will come up in Atlanta, then I would like to sell you oceanfront property in International Falls. Admittedly, a few ifs.

Doomsday? Were you listening tonight? Praised Tubby endlessly... said they will be a 5 seed come March with a legit chance at 2-3 wins in the tourney.

What is in the water up there?

The negativity in the MPLS media is astounding. Always trying to find a rain cloud on the horizon.

Block M: Negativity? Hmmm. As my good friend Phil Mackey would say, stop the mouth breathing, and realize a) I think this year's team has a chance to be really special, and b) Tubby wants that practice facility BADLY... if there is zero progress on that front by March (we've heard that they have a site, but we've heard that now for almost a year... noticeable progress has to be made, break ground, etc.), and if Hewitt loses his job -- a possible big IF -- then Tubby's name will come up in Atlanta.
I know it's almost anti GH to talk about this big elephant in the room, but it's reality. Tubby will retire here if he gets his way, but he thought by now the facility would be done... it's on Bruininks/Maturi to get those wheels in motion.

I feel dumber for reading this thread. If the team doesn't have enough drama to talk about people like Doogie need to create drama to draw attention to themselves.

Not talking about your thoughts on the team.

You can talk about "the elephant in the room" if you want, but when there currently no opening, and there has been no indication by Tubby to anyone that he is a flight risk in the immediate future...maybe leave the baseless speculation for the offseason (once there is actually a job for him to bolt for).

I am on the radio regardless... get plenty of exposure... who gives a bleep about "drawing attention"? Foolish take.
It was a good talking point... did you ignore the reports last March that G. Tech called Tubby's people when there was talk of Hewitt leaving for St. John's?
LET ME REPEAT: IF THERE IS ZERO PROGRESS ON A PRAC. FACILITY, AND IF G. TECH FIRES HEWITT (CERTAINLY POSSIBLE), THEN TUBBY TO ATLANTA TALK WILL START-UP AGAIN? ADMITTEDLY, THOSE ARE A COUPLE IFS.

C'mon Doogie, no self respecting Gopher fan is going to want to hear and/or believe that Tubby will ever leave regardless of evidence to the contrary. Sure GH folks wear maroon blinders most of the time. That is part of what is so great about being a fan. Responding to posts challenging your Tubby theory seems a little counterproductive don't you think? :D

I love the back and forth. Respect everyone's opinion except when personal shots are taken. It should never be personal. Are we kidding ourselves that Tubby doesn't want that practice facility, and wants it badly? He'd retire here, but they have to take care of him. Atlanta is a family draw. G. Tech has the facilities that Tubby wants. They called last March. Why wouldn't they call again?

OK, Mr. CAPSLOCK, why don't you wait until at least one of those things happens? It's freaking December. I really thought you had improved lately, but this is an absolute embarrassment.

Fair enough, but when does it ever not get personal? :)

I don't really look at this is negative journalism - we have a good basketball coach, a future hall of fame coach, and if he wasn't so good, no one would want him, and we'd be taking about firing him vs. him getting lured away to another school.

This is what we got with Tubby, there will be rumors, all the time, of other schools being interested in him. Personally, I'd take that anyday over him not performing.

The solution is pretty simple - BUILD THIS MAN A PRACTICE FACILITY! He has been very patient, it's now his 4th year, and he was promised this 4 years ago. There has been little progress. With a practice facility, I see very little chance of Tubby finishing his career anywhere else.

Pure comedy. Every time someone throws out the "Tubby to____" line they make themselves look like idiots. People can speculate all they want and give this reason and that reason, but the fact remains that after every season he's been here the offseason has been filled with rumors and speculation that he's leaving, yet he's always stayed. He's said time and time again that he's not going anywhere. He's not a young, up-and-coming coach. You get to a point in your career where you don't want to keep starting over. I think it's time to let this stuff die and accept the fact that he's not going anywhere. Stop looking for headlines. Please.

Oh, for sure, absolute embarrassment to deal with these realities: Tubby's people were called by G. Tech when Hewitt to St. John's rumors popped up. They wouldn't call again? Is G. Tech not off to a poor start, even if expectations weren't high? Have they broken ground on Tubby's prac. facility?

They called last march and he didn't answer?
Why would he answer 1 year later?
Is the situation in the athletics department really that much more depressing after just 12 months of time has passed?
Does he really want to go rebuild another program at this stage in his career?
Does he really want to leave a team that could be a top 10 team next year in a job where he has no pressure?
Is Georgia Tech going to fire their coach?
Does Georgia Tech have the stones to make a Big Time hire?
Does Georgia Tech have the money to make a Big Time hire if they are paying off a guy they just let go?
Does Tubby Smith's wife want to make another move?
Would Georgia Tech give Saul Smith as good of a deal that Minnesota does?
Does taking over a bottom 2 team in the ACC at the age of 60 (he will be 60 this summer) really appeal to him? It has taken him 4 years to build the MN program into contenders, does he really want to not be contending again till age 64+?
Is the U of M as far away from breaking ground on a practice facility as people are implying?
Has Tubby actually said anything about leaving if he doesn't get a practice facility (or is that just speculation by people too)?
Why GT? If Tubby is such a hot coach that he could still command a program to build a practice facility, why would be pick a bottom feeder when there are better jobs (that still have little pressure) out there?

There are plenty of questions to be asked that may point towards him staying as well. My point is, in the middle of the season...why go with the Doomsday approach of interrupting a great season by suggesting that he may be gone at the end of the season for a job that as of now does not even exist?

He's going to say that he's leaving? He doesn't want a practice facility? He will at least use leaving as a hammer to get what he wants here at MN. Want to buy some leftover Enron stock I can track down? I know you're a die-hard who has a hard time grasping anything that might be remotely negative about your favorite team, but read the realities I listed above. The talk will occur until Tubby's requests are met.

The talk will occur until Tubby is dead and buried, because he bolted once and the standards of media have changed to the point where speculation is now news.
If the U of M built him a 100 million dollar palace practice facility and the Georgia, Maryland, or Georgia Tech job opened the next day, there would be at least 1 national media member speculating Tubby to _____, and there would probably be a half dozen locals doing the same thing.

You're right, you're on regardless. However, the economics of your job is that you need people to care, you need them to listen because if they don't your ad rates decline and then the radio station pulls the show.

Foolish take to dismiss the point that controversy is good for your bottomline.

1) His agents answered, and talked. They could've made it a 10 sec. conversation.
2) Leverage if for no other reason
3) No, but the same isn't good enough. He should get what he was verbally promised.
4) No rebuilding in Atlanta. Can win with 1 or 2 solid recruiting classes in that market.
5) Top-10 next year? Hmmm. They will be good. But will miss Blake & Nolen.
6) They are off to a bad start.
7) Yes
8) Yes
***Hope I am following along ok
9) Yes... another elephant people don't like to talk about. Just swapped emails w/ a member of Dunker's who knows the family well. She would make another move.
10) For Tubby, for sure, heck, maybe better.
11) Easier to win in Atlanta. Wouldn't need 4 years.
12) Not 100% sure. But outside of lots of talk, where's the action? Where's the ground-breaking?
13) Coincidental that his name came up in Virginia, and that G. Tech called last March? Word is out that he is willing to listen.

Have a good night. Early morning... chatting with Gerald Young (Kill's college roommate) Yep, that's me, Mr. Negative :)

Another problem with Doogies take right there is he is saying that if G. Tech fires Hewitt and there is zero progress on a practice facility Tubby to GT talk will start.

That is impossible. You can't start something that Doogie already started in December.

If that was the goal, why wouldn't I wait 'til a busier time sales-wise to stir the pot? This is a dead period in ad sales. All Christmas ads locked and loaded. These next two weeks as dead as it gets in the radio and TV sales world.

Dennis Dodd I am not. Jim Souhan I am not. I have no power in that regard. Me merely asking a question tonight on 1500-ESPN in non-afternoon drive time, then it carrying over here on GH won't gain any steam.

Mike Leach's name came up in the talks of the Gopher hiring. Glen Mason's name came up when media talked about Indiana. Just because a bunch of media folks talk about Tubby being a candidate for Virginia, Oregon, Georgia Tech does not make any of it true.
People talked about Edsall being a candidate for Minnesota, that went well.

If Dunker's says that Tubby's wife would like to move, then I am sure that is 100% accurate.

I appreciate your effort in covering the team.
Keep making predictions Doogie, I am sure you will get one right at some point (Lets hope it is not this one).

So what you are saying is that you are no more credible than any random rube who is a guest on a radio show or a one who starts a thread on a message board?

Thanks. I am no longer concerned.

We both know there is a lag between ratings and ads. We also both know that if you plant the seed now it can grow in March.

It is what it is. Your industry gets paid to fire people up and create drama.

In a month you'll be talking about the extension that Tubby was supposed to get and I for one haven't heard final details on it being signed. Come March you'll have this whole thing at a higher level of fan interest but all that will end up happening is that Tubby will play his cards right and with this leverage he'll get his facility.

rebuttal regarding TC media

The big problem with the TC media (save a few) from a Gophers perspective is that they don't get their bread buttered by U of M athletics. No repercussion for being hypercritical or downright nasty toward U athletics (Doogie-this is not a comment directed at you). I recall a few years ago that a certain college football coach whose team was very respectable that year was named turkey of the month or some damn thing by a certain sports columnist in the TC media. I'm sure that columnist got a good chuckle out of it. Trying to make a name for himself with the cynical wit.
But such things do not help program building.

Quite a different story in the college town (and state) in which I live, where the local school is big news (want a hint: their marching band was practicing in frigid weather tonight for a date in January). The sports media around here knows where the milk comes from and act accordingly.

Very well could be right. So many factors, the best bet = Tubby signs an extension, gets his facility, and retires here. But ignoring the topic entirely is wrong.
