Welcome aboard! Glad he pulled the trigger.

Maybe it is just me, but I think I get most excited about OL commits. It has been a good start to the summer!

He is that 6-7 mammoth OT that i wanted. 6-6 is okay for an OT but i really wanted a 6-7/6-8 Rasmussen, Lauer, Oslon, Pirsig sized tackle. Very similar to both Rasmussen and Lauer. Rasmussen was only 270 at the end his senior year though so Connelly might be a year ahead of him. Now we just need Carlberg and this class is complete for O-lineman. Croft will commit within the week as well i bet.

Nice!!

He better be recruiting Carlberg. Dovich said he would and it wouldn't hurt to have another in-state lineman in his ear.

STrib: Gophers get commitment from Red Wing lineman Nick Connelly

The Gophers landed their fifth recruit for the 2015 class Tuesday, when Red Wing lineman Nick Connelly gave a verbal commitment during an unofficial recruiting visit to campus, the Star Tribune has confirmed.

The 6-6, 270-pound Connelly plays both offensive tackle and defensive end and is a consensus three-star recruit. He had reported offers from Wyoming, Illinois State and Montana State.

The Gophers have commitments from two other offensive linemen for 2015 in Bronson Dovich (Chaska) and Ted Stieber (Akron, Ohio).

Go Gophers!!

Red Wing Republican Eagle with quotes from Connelly: Football: Connelly commits to Golden Gophers

"That’s where I always wanted to play. That’s where I always wanted to be,” Connelly said. "To play for Red Wing, Minnesota, to go to Minneapolis to play for the Gophers, it’s a great feeling. My whole family’s excited for me. My grandma was going crazy once I told her. It seems like everyone’s happy for me and happy I’m staying in Minnesota.”

A standout offensive tackle and defensive end for the Wingers, Connelly will head to the U of M as an offensive lineman prospect. He will have to wait until February to sign his National Letter of Intent, which bounds Connelly to the school.

"They said that I can play defense right now, but they think that I’ll end up putting on so much weight and muscle in my redshirt freshman year that I’ll turn into a better offensive tackle than a defensive end,” Connelly said.

With Lauer starting at LT the next 3 years, and Pirsig at least 2 of the next 3 years (if not all 3), he is highly unlikely to start in 2016. If he starts as a RS Fr over two RS Srs with multiple years of starting experience, something is either wrong or he is quasi-legendary.

Thats what i thought too. Lauer and Pirsig would have to either tear their ACL or transfer for Connelly to start at a RS freshman. Rasmussen would be a RS soph as well that he would have to beat out. We would be screwed if we are still starting second year guys on the O-line in 2016.

Won't start, but may very well be in the rotation. Barring injury, I don't see it any other way.

Would have to beat out Rasmussen though unless one is second string LT and the other RT. Is Alex Mayes playing OT as well? If so than i doubt Connelly even gets into the rotation. Chad Fhanning who i consider a scholarship caliber lineman is at LT too.

You recruit every player as a starter. Sh!t happens.

Ask Tony Mortensen. We beat Wisconsin and he's MVP.

Ask Gil Fash. No explanation needed.

Always nice when you hear a recruit say his life long dream was to play at the U of M. We don't get nearly enough of that around here so it is refreshing when an instate kid feels that way about playing for the program.

Ideally any lineman you recruit gets to come in and sit for a few years, so I agree with the premise that if he is playing as early as 2016 something probably went horribly wrong. That being said there are a lot of assumptions being made about guys that haven't played much or very little so there is really no way of knowing at this point how it is all going to shake out in the next few years.

Hopefully with the number of guys that have gotten some experience in on the O-Line the past few years we are getting to the point where we won't need to consider young guys as an option unless they come in and are just out of this world awesome right off the bat like an Eslinger or Setterstrom was all those years ago.

Nice! I love it when the local kids stay close to home. Welcome aboard!

He's quick but VERY weak, will need to be red shirted.

Unless, of course, they both leave early because they're 1st round draft picks. :p

Piling on but this is a good pick up. Get him in the program, weight room, etc. for a red-shirt year, a year of watching from the sideline, a year of spot play & finally when he's a r-Jr he should be ready for prime time. That's the recipe, expect from results linemen when they're 3rd year Juniors.

He looks like a beast on tape. Any ideas why is offer list is so weak? Wyoming (now coached by the bisons old coach, who already recruited this area heavily) isn't a powerhouse by any means & that's the next best offer he had after us.

The beauty of Coach Kill and his Staff, they see the potential of a high schooler, not the immediate abilities. They don't throw away scholarships.

It might have to do with the fact that he was 255 last year. He's already at 270 and will likely be 285 by the time he steps on campus. A lot of teams are still thinking he's 255.
