Cashius McNeilly & Emanuel Miller (Texas A&M) both in the portal

You don't think he would start here?
That wasn't my point, at all. It was about which team has a better chance to win next year.

Clearly I did not understand what shape Iowa was looking to be in next season.

It's not like Iowa is in much better shape. They lose like 75% of their offense going into next year and they haven't added any transfers yet.

That's a good point. Here are their returning scorers:

Joe Wieskamp, a really good player who is testing the waters and might be able to get a deal like Coffey and leave

McCaffrey's younger son who came of the bench this year

Keegan Murray, a freshman small forward who came of the bench but had a fine freshman year.

Everyone else is either not much of a scorer or young and unproven.

Player Note......In 2020 Universal Hoops Scouting {#1 source in Canadian BB recruiting} stated Cashius McNeilly was probably the best player in his recruited Canadian class that year....

This would be a major coup for BJ. Bring in a couple of highly ranked players with multi year starting potential. Build a nice base.

He also has a year of high school and 4 years left.
Looks like Cashius was hurt and then opted out. Do we know what his injury was freshman year?

Sounds like his injury wasn’t necessarily season ending, but that the injury caused them to decide to redshirt to not waste part of a year. Not sure if that’s better or worse? Guessing no long term effects from the injury, but maybe they didn’t think he would contribute that much year 1 anyway? To be fair, they were supposed to be horrible that year so could have just redshirted to plan for the future.

Probably true, but if it was so cut and dry he would have already signed with Iowa. Maybe he likes Twin Cities as opposed to Iowa city or 10 other things. Minnesota is a big ten school with alot to offer. Minnesota basketball may not be Michigan, but its also not Depaul.
I read he wanted to go to get a graduate business degree somewhere. If I am remembering correctly, an U of M MBA is a lot better than one from Iowa.

So basically you give a black guy 1 year and a rich white guy's son 8 years to change a program? The white guy inherited an NCAA tourney team and the black guy inherited a team that didn't qualify for the postseason.
BJ will get at least four years.

MN's graduate business program may be higher rated than Iowa's but almost all Big Ten schools are well regarded in business.

It has nothing to do with race. We hired the exact same profile as the last guy. A coach with little to no HC experience. At least Pitino had exposure to working with notable HCs, BJ hasn't had much notable exposure in his assistant resume. People thought Pitino would be able to recruit off of his name. People think BJ will recruit off of his local connections. It's the same freak'n profile as the last guy. We spent 8 years on that profile and what now we are suppose to spend another 8 years, assuming the model doesn't work? If BJ isn't able to recruit, and fast, the program will be bottom of the league, and then you can't recruit anymore because no good players want to get their face kicked in every night when they can go to programs where they will win and get tourney bids, that is what forever is getting at.

Iowa's graduate school is unranked and Minnesota's is 28th for their full time MBA programs (U.S. News). While a lot of programs in the Big 10 are well-regarded, Iowa's is not.

Pitino was a lazy recruiter and a mediocre coach. He was a poor game day coach which is why we lost so many games in the last 3 minutes. Team after team shot poorly and rebounded poorly. That's coaching not just recruiting. He wasn't a horrible coach but you shouldn't last 8 years in the Big 10 if you are mediocre. How do you give a white guy like that 8 years and then put the new black guy on "a short leash"?

NW (Kellogg), Michigan (Ross), Indiana (Kelley), and WI are the only B1G comparable business schools, and even then I would put Carlson above all but Kellogg and Ross. This is because outside of a top-10 school, there is a lot of economic regionalism that drives student success. MNs economy means way more placement opportunity, specifically for sectors that are big here like CPG or med device.

Everyone has complained about Pitino being a poor recruiter, so imagine my surprise to find all of the outgoing Gopher transfers with stars next to their names and all of our low/mid-major incoming transfers have no stars next to theirs. Seems like Pitino was an adequate recruiter, just a poor teacher and game coach.

Iowa is going to be bad next year maybe worse than Minnesota.

Finally someone bringing up the obvious!! Wisconsin will be down also. Rutgers and Penn State as well. How about Nebraska and Northwestern? They might be improved, but it is not like they are world beaters.

Illinois, Michigan, MSU and tOSU will be very good. Purdue, Maryland and maybe Indiana will probably be decent as well. After that? Wisconsin lost a lot. Iowa lost a lot. Rutgers lost a lot.

Tuby Smith was given six years before he was given the boot. It's one size fits all.

His star fizzled quickly from winning the National Title in Kentucky. He had the ring. Everybody thought we've got a real proven winner for a coach. IMHO, He was mediocre.

So, for those of us who think hiring an experienced coach is the ticket, think again.

It is hard to get a good coach who will replicate his prior success. So, hiring BJ with no prior coaching experience is worth a gamble like what Michigan State did with Tom Izzo except for HS.

He was first an assistant to Jud Heathcote, then to Associate Head Coach. So, at least he learned from a coach who he eventually replaced.

Hiring BJ's experienced assistant coaches is super critical. He has his former HS coach Thorson to act as a mentor. He has Jason Kemp, and soon hopefully Jamie McNeilly

“We’re not Detroit!”

If only HS recruiting ratings were the sole indicator for college on-court success, eh?

Thats how I see it. Medical RS, Covid year, 4 years left. On the Eric Curry path to being a tenured professor upon graduation.
I love this. Now looking forward to seeing him on the sideline wearing a tweed sport coat with elbow patches.

Do you see all of the mid-major transfers being picked up by P6 teams? Why aren't they paying attention to "stars by the player's name?" Do you think there is some infallible panel of wise men who have carefully studied all of these players to assign these rankings? The P6 schools picking up mid-major players are picking based on actual performance instead of "potential" or ratings coming out of high school.

I notice that Mitchell has four stars beside his name. Maybe he will turn out to be one but he sure didn't show it this year. Tre' Williams also has four stars beside his name but I sure don't expect him to have a four star career.

Pornpup dropping knowledge.
There access to this Hoops Scouting thing? Never heard of it but I’m very intrigued.

We are at the bottom of the conference. Ben and his staff need 4-5 years. Ben comes with some experience of what not to do. That can be very valuable.

As you have often reminded us, no conference title by year 6 and it's time move on.
