Cam Christie is entering the Transfer Portal

Every player that has put their name in the portal you have held out hope that they'll return. They haven't and they're not going to. If Christie plays college basketball next year, it won't be at MN. Doogie made it clear he put his name in the portal because he has big $$ promised elsewhere if he chooses to pull out of the draft. If he had any intention of playing for the Gophers again, he wouldn't have gone into the portal.
I don't dispute anything you say here.

For argument's sake, however, put yourself in the position of this other school that's promised him big $$. Do you stop shopping for anybody else at that position while you wait for his decision? If you do wait and then he stays in the draft, your plan Bs and Cs probably signed elsewhere. Unless Christie already told this school that he plans on opting out of the draft, it's a mighty gamble for that school to wait.

Really, it's not that different a gamble that MN has right now - with the major difference being that the other school has enough NIL $ to be on the prowl for NBA opter-outers.

You have been banging the drum hard that Ben has nothing to do with who stays and who goes and that is why we shouldn’t hope for a better coach.

But applying that same logic why would we bother to pay him 2 million if none of this is on him? Might as well find whoever will take the lowest salary and go with him.
It's a big Dog & Pony Show. Our administration doesn't give 2-shits about winning. This is a fact. Not an opinion.

If they wanted to win...they'd have kept our players.

Yes...it's nonsensical to pay a coach $2M and then surround him with scrubs. But we do it.

Sure. Anything is possible. There's a 2% chance Cam is a Gopher next year.

I'm not going to dispute that Cam is a damn good bball player, and one that will probably see the NBA. What I don't get is that how a player like him, at this stage, gets drafted in the top couple rounds. He has a long way to go in my opinion. Admittedly, my opinion gets me jack squat and I understand the NBA drafts on potential to some extent. My biggest issue with his play as a freshman is that he looked absolutely clueless finishing around the hole in traffic. He couldn't do it and looked foolish trying. I make up better shots in horse around the rim than he even attempted. A shooter like him has to get to the basket to open up the threat from deep. I'm with my friend Bob on this one as far as preferred path. I see him in college next year. Wish it was in Gophers gear.

Pro leagues draft on potential all the time and guys that can shoot really well are tough to find. The G-League makes it even easier for teams to take a flyer on a guy who might not be quite ready and has some things to work on.

Pro leagues care about what you have done but they are most concerned about what they believe you will be able to do at the next level.

This is 100% true. It's why Anthony Edwards was a #1 overall pick and Luka Garza was not.

A more accurate example to me would be a guy like Boye Mafe on the football side. He had a solid college career but his college production didn't really justify going #40 overall in the second round to the Seahawks.

He got drafted that high on the potential teams saw in him and the gamble has paid off for Seattle as he had 9 sacks in his second year and is getting a lot of praise as a secret weapon on their defense.

And preferrably quickly upon arriving. With injuries, workload management, etc., NBA rosters need a strong supporting cast of capable players that can come in and produce. Gone are the days of drafting a guy and waiting for him to be viable. They want game-ready players.

I think he wanted to assure himself of alternatives in case the NBA didn't work pooout for him THIS YEAR!

Let's say we add Christie and Fred Evans Jr. to the roster giving us 14 scholarship players, if we redshirt Grayson Grove, does that take us down to the 13-man scholarship limit?
Or does redshirting a player have no effect on the 13-man roster limit?

No effect. You can have 13 scholarship players on the roster.

honestly, I would put the odds of Christie returning to MN at about 3%- and that might be stretching it. I won't say Zero chance, because theoretically there is always a chance, but realistically, it looks as if Christie is thinking NBA all the way. If he isn't drafted, then he has the portal as a fall-back position. in which case it comes down to how much NIL he is offered and from whom. If it is a question of who offers the most money, MN is not winning that fight.

so ironically, for all the Ben bashers, it's possible that the only chance of Christie returning to MN hinges on Christie liking the current Coach.

again, odds are very low, but if Christie said he was coming back to MN because of the coach, there would be people on this board running out to buy adult diapers, because there would be a lot of pants-shitting going on.

Isn’t the rule that once you’re in the draft you can’t go back to college? IIRC, you used to be able to go back if you weren’t drafted, but then the rule was changed.

So that means that ONLY TWO OF THESE THREE (Cam Christie, Lu'cye Patterson and Fred Evans Jr.) may be added to the current roster.
That means the door will need to be ruled shut on Christie before the NBA decision is made, in order to add Patterson and Evans Jr. sooner.

Yes. He did. And if he plays college basketball next year, it will be for one of the other teams offering him more $$ and a better chance to win.

I would have to look this up, but off the top of my head, I believe that you can declare yourself eligible for the draft, and go through the full evaluation process - but, as long as you do not hire an agent, you can withdraw by the deadline and maintain college eligibility.

that, as I recall, was done so that players could go through the evaluation process and get feedback on whether they had a realistic chance of being drafted, to cut down on the number of players who declared for the draft and wound up not getting drafted and having blown their college eligibility.

They all have agents now...so I believe you can have one and still withdraw by May 29.

Thanks for your reply, but I wasn’t referring to the evaluation period, but the draft itself, as you wrote the following in your post -

“If he isn't drafted, then he has the portal as a fall-back position. in which case it comes down to how much NIL he is offered.”

I can’t figure out how to bold anymore since the platform was updated, so I copied/pasted from you post and used quotes.

I'm guessing that May 30 will be a busy day for portal players and NBA rejects making their college choice decisions.

OK, I understand. poorly-worded on my part. should have said "if he isn't going to be drafted...."

as you note, if Christie or any other player does not withdraw by the deadline, then they lose college as a fall-back position. but the whole point of the current system is to give players like Christie as much feedback as possible so that they can make an informed decision. If the scouts are telling him "no way you're getting drafted unless it's at the bottom of the 2nd round," then he has to decide whether that is better than going back to college or going to the G-League.

not a mind-reader, but that has to be why Christie entered the portal on the last possible day - so that if it looks as if he won't be drafted - or not drafted high enough - he still has college as an option. if he was 100% committed to the draft, then there is no reason to enter the portal.

Correct. They have 4 guys returning from last year's team. Add 2 recruits and 5 transfers brings the number to 11 currently.

Who is Fred Evans Jr?
Edit: I'm assuming you mean Ken Evans Jr?

I don't think I would. I don't blame someone for doing it. I passed over a lot of money at 23 to improve the amount of money I would make in the future. I did it while also not having a family with tons of cash (like Cam). I'm not saying that I blame him for taking the money, but he has a legit shot at much more money than a NIL deal.

If I was Cam Christie, I'd go to the NBA (if I could get drafted), D-League, or return to MN.

Every choice I would make would be about what would put me in a better position to go to the NBA.
Cam won't be transferring to a question mark situation though. Teams that offer him know what he needs and aren't going to waste money on him if he doesn't fit what they need.

He will have little in the way of uncertainty. I get what you artes saying though and as a risk averse person I agree with you.

Yes and No. The G league enables teams to draft projects, and gives them a way to develop them to get them ready for the jump to an NBA roster.

NBA drafting is somewhat mysterious but it is laughable to think Christie is one of the top 60 guys in the world available to the draft.
