Bryant Allen Transferring - per his Facebook

I was a decent WR in high school but nowhere near D1 material. I even got a chance to be on ESPN with dedicating our stadium to Joe Montana. It was a joke

Sucks, It's ok tho. Guy's got a lot of class. Wish him all the luck where ever he's headed.

Why does does anyone care what happens to a player who quits on his teammates because he is not getting enough playing time? He may not be a bad guy but this is going to make it much easier for him to quit in the future when things are not going his way.

You have a point there. Allen may never have grown into a legitimate #1 WR, but he would have been one of our leading receivers for the next couple seasons.

As far as the people questioning how much he has contributed already, the kid was still young. He was in his 2nd year in college. I think this is a pretty big loss.

Another thing, I really don't think his issues were academic. I know that if there were any questions about his academics, he wouldn't have been allowed to walk on to the basketball program. The guys who walk on and attempt to play a second sport are held to a significantly higher academic standard than others. This is pretty standard because if you are the football coach (and the one giving him a scholarship) you wouldn't want to take a kid who is having a hard time staying eligible and allowing him to put a ton more on his table.

I think there might be two distinct possibilities:
#1: Allen wants to focus on basketball. If he did this, he would have to transfer. The U doesn't and won't have a scholarship available for Bryant Allen. He would also have 3 more seasons of eligibility left in bball.
#2: This is PURE speculation: Maybe Coach Kill wanted him to focus on football and didn't want 2 sport athletes. If he is our #2 WR, a tad injury prone, and pretty slight, it could make sense that the coach wanted him to focus on football and adding a bit of weight.

You may have a point with #2, though after 2 years of both, one would think Allen would have a good grasp of his abilities on the collegiate level in both sports, at least in BB with Tubby working with him.

idk is it all over playing time? cuz he was gonna get a lot more in FB come next year. I get what ur sayin though.

Bryant Allen didn't quit this team over lack of playing time. He saw action as a true freshman and he would have been a starter next season.

It could have been a lot of things that are causing Bryant Allen to transfer from the U but playing time can't be one of them.

Over on another board, it is mentioned Allen wants to be closer to home. He is not the first student athlete to feel that way nor will be the last. Hope all goes well for him.

Hi Captain Assumptions! There is no logic that supports this idea but I'm sure you must be right.

If I am wrong I apologize for jumping to conclusions. But in my experience lack of playing time is usually the reason college athletes give up their full ride scholarships to schools that were perfectly satisfactory for them when they were freshmen.

Given our depth issues at WR I think its safe to say that at this point there isn't much if anything to support you.

I wonder if he has come to the realization that he is not going to the NFL and would prefer to play basketball for a couple of years rather than get knocked silly in football.

I suspect he will transfer to a smaller D1 school and play only basketball.

I hope he stays.

It's not his fault, but it was clear from his performance that nobody ever taught him how to play receiver, or football for that matter. I don't intend that as a criticism.

My thoughts on Allen: the most overrated player in the history of Minnesota basketball

Meh. Would have been nice to see him stick around, but I'm not going to miss him much. I prefer focus my home team spirit energies towards the guys that stay loyal to the Maroon and Gold.

no love from the Uof M

I'm glad the kid is gone: 3 wr coaches, 3 oc coaches, 3 dc coaches and 2 head coaches, its a wonder he stayed that lone, and not to mention he was not given the chance to show his skills, but they way the U responded with the negative words when he left, its a wonder any one would come to the U or recommend the University of Minnesota>

I'm sure the 3 defensive coordinators really killed him, as well as playing under Horton for less than a season.

He was given playing time, he just wasn't good enough to beat others out. He played as a pure freshman IIRC.

Exaggerate much?

Allen had 16 catches/202 yds as soph. And 5 catches/45 yds as frsh. Which means on an average everytime the ball is thrown to him he's either close or gets a first down. Now do you think he wasn't good enough or just didn't get the ball thrown to him enough to be effective on the field? It took for deck to leave, green to get injured, gray to be injured, stoudemier to be suspened just for us to see just how good mcknight could be.Sometimes certain systems don't allow young men 2 blossom and its better 4 them 2 play where the opportunity is better 4 them. Wouldn't u agree?

I totally agree and I think Allen is a really good talent, i've said it a couple times in this thread that he will be missed a lot. However, I couldn't imagine there would be much of a better opportunity in all of college football for Bryant Allen.
He will be the sure fire starter on this team next season and he will be the leading returning WR his SR season. If he goes somewhere else, he will have to sit out a season and I can't imagine he will be going to another BCS program that has less depth at WR. I really do believe Bryant Allen is a talented guy, but he will have an impact position handed to him next year at the U.
He is a smaller WR, but a lot of WR's with similar builds to Allen's were effective at Northern Illinois under Kill and I don't think it would really hinder him being a big part of our team next year. Furthermore, if he had issues with how the old regime used him, they're gone.

That said, if he leaves, I wish him nothing but the best (unless he's plays the Gophers), but I really hope he thinks about his decision if it is football based. He is in a position to succeed at the U.

Studwell, I agree there may be hiccups in his game, but he just looked so much more polished as a catch-and-run guy than Stoudermire. Allen seemed to stay in his patterns this year (he did have some trouble doing that as a freshman, but he was thrown in there and who knows what Fisch's offense required?).

Bob_Loblaw, I agree that Allen may be tailor-made for Kill's high percentage passing offense and I hope Allen stays here.

Has this been confirmed yet, or just speculation?

If Bryant Allen is transferring, then that means to me that HE wants to run the team and the hell with what our new Coach Kill says. "Then Leave". A famous line from the movie SECOND HAND LIONS. (Starring Robert DuVall and Michael Caine).
