That does not look good at all. I can't say I blame Maturi (for once) - if he didn't have a ruling or enough facts, he had to make a conservative decision. But that doesn't mean I'm not really bummed, Trevor was our missing link. Hopefully they get him a redshirt this year, or is able to play after his trial in December when it really counts, going into BT season. Best of luck to Trevor!

I agree GopherLady. this is one of those situations where someone has to make a tough call, and if Maturi has indeed made this decision, I can't fault him. Too much uncertainty surrounding this situation at this point in time. Having said that, I really hope Trevor sticks with the team because if/when he is cleared, he could be a monster in the Big Ten.

I've lost all respect for Maturi. Let the courts do their job, until he is found guilty in a court of law, let the man play ball. Ridiculous!

I'm sure he will - and I can't see any reason he won't be found innocent. I don't believe in a lot of kids, but I do believe in Trevor.

Burton - I see your point - but just imagine if this were happening at WI or IA. If there was a kid charged but not ruled on yet, we'd be up in arms that they got to play, just with accusations. I think there is a 1 in a million chance he's guilty, but if he is, and was playing with us all year - how would that look?

It certainly doesn't look like good news but I'll wait until an announcement is made.

I agree -

I am not fully up to date on facebook or twitter lingo but I notice his dream is still alive.

I Have Idea About The Facts

But Jules Camara was suspended in 2000-01 at UK (for a different ALLEGED offense) and returned to play very well in 2002 and 2003 seasons.

+1

Typical Gopher luck. I think back to losing Olberding and all those great players and a potential NCAA championship because the NCAA was pissed at Mus for the fight. Then the Mitch Lee deal and on and on.

Maturi is way off on this one. If he plays it conservative, why didn't he do that when hiring Brewster?

Could just be frustration

Maybe he went to Maturi yesturday looking for an answer and Maturi said he'll have to wait until next week to find out, "to protect (him) and the program." Just trying to be positive here.

If this is true, Mbakwe won't be the only pissed off Gopher. Tubby will be mighty mad himself.

Facebook

I don't get why these kids post this stuff in such a public forum. A D-1 athlete is a public figure, and should know it. If he wants to place this stuff after an anouncement, fine, but it just seems unwise to put this junk in the public forum before anything official is done. It's vague and confusing, and I would agree that if Trevor is not allowed to play, he ought to be really ticked. The "no play" decision could easily have been made much earlier, so he could have done something else if he wanted to.

Are we headed toward a carefully timed late Friday afternoon press release?

Burton: Didn't you just do to Maturi what you asked him not to do? You just ruled him (Maturi) guilty and he hasn't even announced a decision nor do we know the facts fo the situation.

I couldn't have said it better myself. If this is true, it is a crushing blow!

It would look like we're following "due process", the established course of our legal system in the U.S. This process is designed to protect the legal rights of the individual. I wonder if, by denying Trevor his due process rights, the U of M is setting themselves up for potential legal action.

so will he lose a year of eligibilty over this? and if so can we redshirt him?

it is a crushing blow!

Lol. Worst case scenario of course is that Trevor doesn't play. Because we didn't lose anything from last year, have a few very talented kids coming this year, and the core of the team is a year older, I think we're still in pretty good shape regardless.

Bleed knows how to settle everyone down. Thanks, Bleed... I've said this before, and I will say it again... This is an extremely tough situation for Joel Maturi.... I am glad that I do not lose the sleep that Maturi does over how to handle this.

On one hand, his biggest job is dealing with the integrity of the University of Minnesota.

On the other hand, he has the future of a young man to deal with.

Nads in a vice.

Duke's AD and president had no punishment whatsoever for kicking (not just suspending) the 3 accused LaX players out of the school despite the new Durham DA publicly stating that the 3 were innocent (not just "not guilty") later.

If Trevor is indeed innocent, this will not come back to haunt Maturi. This was the safest decision for him personally.

Isn’t his court date in December? Our first big ten game isn’t until December 29th. Maybe Maturi is playing it this way because it is the safer play for the image of the University knowing we will probably only "really" need him for a few games in the preseason considering the vast number of cupcake teams we will be facing. If he is proven innocent, he will be ready to join the team before week 1 of the Big Ten season. This is the only reasoning I can think of.

Crushing blow was an exaggeration, but his presence wil be missed without question. Don't get me wrong, we will be just fine without him with the talent we already have. Let's just hope he is cleared for Big Ten play.

All We Know is We Want to Win....

Let's face it, everyone here comes to this issue with extreme bias. We want to win as many basketball games as possible. And guess what? Maturi comes to this situation with the same bias. He wants to win. And this is not a court of law. The standards of conduct and due process are different at the university than they are in a court of law. Do you think Joel has more information about the situation than any of us? Do you think he has more meaningful input to the situation than any of us have?
What we know is what we see on this board and what we read in the papers. We just want Trevor to play so we can win more games. That is what we know.

Well, it's time to move on. Remember, Royce has been looking good in practice and the Gophers still have Johnson and Paul Carter. Let's not forget that the entire core of last season's team is here. Minnesota would still be ranked in the top 25 without Mbakwe. Don't get me wrong, Trevor would have been able to give this team an incredible dimension, but the program has to move on without him for now. When he comes back, it will be a great lift.

Unless there's been an official annoucement I think he's still on the team. :)

Pewter:

While the Duke president and AD may not have had public reprimands, I'm sure boosters and board members were not happy when the 3 expelled students and coach Pressler all filed suit against the university. Their settlements were not made public, but I'll bet it was more than the Duke Lacrosse team generates in an average season, or two. Not to mention, the plaintiff attorney on the case, Nifong, was later disbarred for unethical conduct.

The fact of the matter remains, if Tubby was getting even a tiny whiff of impropriety from Mbakwe, he would likely sideline him on his own. That said, Maturi will probably play is safe and make Mbakwe burn a red shirt; best scout player in the Big Ten!
