Arkansas paper says they are talking to Tubby and close to hiring him

It doesn't help that MN is perceived as a lesser job than it really is and that our local media actually fans the rumor mill. But Tubby almost goes out of his way not to quash the rumors, IMO.

He can't really say anything stronger than he has been saying the last two weeks.
If he comes out strongly denying any interest mid-season it actually would probably fuel more rumors.

Agreed - Tubby seems like he could a lot do more to stop the talk. On his show today he could have even brought up the Arkansas rumor and said sumthin like 'Yeah - I saw those Arkansas rumors - but I have no interest in going there. They are a fine program but I want to finish what we've started here at MN.' --- or sumthin like that. When I listened to his show I heard a lot of dancin' in his words. Gonna get together with Joel and work something out. We need a practice facility. Its nice to be wanted and needed ... yada yada.

I think he could do a lot more to make his intentions known and clear. jmo.

EXACTLY. It seems like he enjoys the rumors, the attention, the feeling of being wanted by many many people. Otherwise he would say something and not dance around it, like RRJACK said.

Publicly maybe not. But whatever you think of Myron, Doogie and co. he clearly doesn't do anything to quash them behind the scenes either.

Yes, he could, but he doesn't. Who knows why. Is it a way of trying to get more money or leverage something else? Does he simply have the philosophy he's going to listen just in case? Does it come from some need to feel wanted and appreciated? Is he reminding the administration he's in charge? Does it go back to Maturi saying if he wants to go, we can't keep him? I know Tubby keeps saying he's happy and not going anywhere, but his leaving keeps coming up. I've gotten to the point where I think Tubby is responsible for at least some of this, and it is getting old.

Tubby's just trying to milk more out of his incoming extension. I personally don't believe that he merits more, or even an extension, but if the administration decides it is a good idea so be it.

For the record to all the people blaming the local media, the only two guys who cover the team on a full-time basis (Myron and Marcus) have been extremely responsible on this. They have both said on Twitter and their blogs that they don't think anything is going to happen.

They are without blame in this.

Let me drop my 2 cents worth here.

I will say first off that I do NOT expect Tubby to leave Minn. I have always thought this would be his last job.
Having said that I am going to tell you guys a couple of things you may not want to hear.

I live in Lexington and have all of my 51 years.
The VERY DAY that Tubby stepped on a plane for Minn. he did his weekly television show ( last one of the season)
and told the anchor that he "would be back to coach KY next season and was looking forward to it."
3 hours later he was gone and did NOT even go by the Wildcat Lodge to tell his players goodbye. They found
out about it on TV. I remember one of the players actually crying on TV because he couldn't believe Tubby had
left without telling them first.
It later came to light that he had his agent negotiating a deal with the Gophers in mid December, just before
SEC conference play started. In other words, about 4 months before Minn. introduced him as the next coach.
He also didn't seem to care that he had left UK pretty bare on talent expect for Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford.

Let me say that it is NOT abnormal for coaches to do things this way. They always say they are not going anywhere
then all of a sudden ESPN reports that so and so has been hired and a press conference is scheduled.
I guess they can't do it any other way.

I am not saying that it is going to happen again. As stated I am of the belief that Tubby will retire at Minn.
BUT, in the event that the Arkansas story has some truth and Tubby heads that way, just know it will NOT be
his first time to do it this way.

So much for my class act opinion of the man.I guess it's par for the course in big time hoops.I just thought Tubby had old school ethics.

>>Does Tubby really want to go into Rupp every year? Not buying this at all...<<

The fire's gone from his belly. Why would he return to the SEC? If he's interviewed, it's probably to leverage a brand new practice facility out of Minnesota.

First, most times when a coach leaves, it probably goes down that way. As poor ole Joel always says about this 'I won't know until it's already done.' And it's especially if you're leaving a place like Kentucky. He would have had little choice but to do it the way he did, without even visiting, etc.

That said, if he leaves us in our current state, not having completed the job and with the comments he's made the last couple weeks, my respect for him will plummet to near zero.

Bayfield,

>>Who is the equivalent of a Jerry Kill in college hoops?<<

Are you predicting the return of Dan Monson?

As to "having to go through this every year," either you have a coach who interests other people or you don't. You can't have it both ways.

So someone who follows Tubby from messageboard to messageboard ( sicko! ) has something profound to say and we should listen to it?!?

Calipari will leave Kentucky in shambles. It's just a matter of time.

Didnt we figure out that the only possible place tubby would even consider was Maryland?(Massachusetts?... i forget) because thats where his family all lives?

Agreed.

Tubby could kill the Arkansas talk with one sentence. I understand he can get tired of the constant "talk" whenever a job opens up but if he is worried about his recruiting, step on the talk ASAP.

The "dancing" around it with coach speak makes me want to heave.

As far as the practice facility goes nothing like this is going to help. Win and you will get a facility.

That being said, I love having Tubby as our coach and hope he stays here happily until his retirement.

This just isn't true. You don't hear about Krykrewski, Self, Matta, Williams or really any other big name coach every single year. Tubby has a history of doing this at Kentucky and Georgia as well.

Exactly when was the last rumor about Wright, Thompson III, etc, etc. I can't speak to what Tubby did or didn't do at other stops, but having a big name coach does not automatically=rumors of departure.

It does when you aren't at a "destination" school.

And maybe you have missed the Izzo or Coach K to the NBA rumors every year or so?

True. Probably has as much to do with Minnesota as Tubby, and that won't change until we are consistently dominant. We need to have a couple decent seasons in a row before even dreaming about that.

I don't buy that. Is Vanderbilt a destination? No. Do they have to deal with crap rumors about Kevin Stallings every year? Not so much. Tubby could do more to stop them and he chooses not to. Maybe he feels he needs to keep leverage with ol Joel, but it sure is getting old.

Exactly, when you have a big name coach at a school that is not getting national respect, you will have schools line up every year to try and steal him.
