Arkansas paper says they are talking to Tubby and close to hiring him

I am seeing tweets now saying that there is nothing close to imminent deal. Perhaps the local and national media should not make things up and/or run with baseless rumors.

If they did that, there would be virtually no media. Amazing what the expansion of platforms does to the quality of product. But as long as we talk about the garbage they toss out, they win and we lose.

The most amazing thing about this year's version is that Seth Davis's name has not been part of it. He must have been too busy this weekend.

Doogie already bet me lunch he is going to Georgia tech

Only because you gave me unreal odds (sleep-deprived, so can't remember what exactly they were)... but glad to buy you lunch if Tubby, as I suspect, stays here... think this is a power play... he would love for Maturi to be dumb enough to agree to a plan to allow Saul to take the program over eventually... also, could be talking to Ark. for more $$ with a contract extension.

It may be rich, but his name has popped up for every opening since he got here. That doesn't happen without a little help from the people who represent him.

I think that it more likely stems from the fact that every member of the media, national or otherwise, (except Andy Katz) assumes that Tubby would rather have a different job. He has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay at MN until he retires. However, as long as we have the local beat writers (aka Myron) constantly talking about how Tubby is gone after every season (with no evidence whatsoever it often seems like) what else can you expect but rumor after rumor? Lets be honest, most people would probably assume that Tubby would rather coach at Arkansas (insert: Virginia, Georgia, etc.) than at Minnesota. Why? I don't know, but that seems to be the perception

It's actually sounding like he may not be talking to Arkansas at all. We can call off the bet if you want. GT is likely the only place he'd leave for. It is a matter of them wanting him.

If maturi agrees to name Saul coach in waiting he is more of an idiot than I suspected. Saul isn't even the number 1 assistant.

Like a lot of rumors, it sounds like the media trying to show itself relevant by throwing things against the wall and see's what sticks.

BTW - what does Tubby to Tulsa have to do with Arkansas? A more reasonable belief in regard to Tulsa is that unnamed transfer player they are wanting to see transfer to them.

All three posts here as stupid as they can be. Who are you guys? One bad season and all of this? If I were Tubby, I would want to leave just to stay away from jackasses like you 3.

Go Gophers

By the way, Tubby won't go anywhere until he proves that he could do it here too. He and all of us had so much of bad luck for the last 2 years. A true fan would sit down and analyze the season in a positive way. All parties should be accountable for this bad season but none should be run out of town. Stop wishing for the coaches or players to leave. We'll have a great season next year and many more to come.

A true fan would sit down and analyze the season in a positive way??? Lay off the crack guy.

And how is my post stupid? We have all these nut jobs on here freaking out of Tubby rumors and I start a thread stating that it is more likely his camp is starting these rumors to give him leverage in the contract extension talks. If your dumb @ss truely thinks Arkansas is stupid enough to hire him then I guess there is not much I can do here to get you to think otherwise.

Every year these rumors start and usually Tubby needs some leverage (practice facility / extension)......

Or he spent a couple years of his life there and may be combining some work with a personal visit to friends. I won't be paying much attention to Tubby's travel schedule in the near future.

My hope is that he is working hard to improve this basketball team through recruiting and prepping guys for off season workouts.

every year i lose more respect for Tubby because of this *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#.

Has anyone stopped to think that probably the last thing Tubby wants to do is go back to Rupp Arena and get rolled by Kentucky? That's exactly what's going to happen if he takes the Arkansas job.

Whatever the outcome, these rumors have to stop. The program has already been disappointing under Tubby and we certainly don't need annual "he's leaving" rumors to contribute to keeping us off track.

Maybe I'm naive, but why does it always take grown adult men acting like 5 year olds to ensure they "get what they want"? They're working on a practice facility. He's got an extension to sign. If this is anything more than GENUINE interest from Tubby to go to Arkansas, it's embarrassing. On the other hand, if it IS genuine interest, it's quite sad that he (reportedly) just gave a kid his WORD that he was signing the extension! I don't mean to call into question Tubby or his character, which I have held in high regard, but this just seems sad.

The rumours cannot help recruiting. I put it in the positive column that the newest recruit indicated he wanted to make sure Tubby was staying here before he committed. Whatever Tubby told him gave him that assurance. He demands accountability and integrity from his players. I hope he extends it to them as well.

There are theories to addressing rumours. One is flat out address them directly and tell the absolute truth right away. If this is part of a negotiating ploy, he would be a fool to do that. The other is don't bother addresssing them directly because you don't have the resources to respond to everyone and anything you say can be twisted. Tubby must operate from the latter.

Report: Arkansas met with Tubby, "close" to hiring Gophers coach?

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Monday that the University of Arkansas, which fired John Pelphrey Sunday, has targeted Tubby Smith.

The report said Smith has had face-to-face contact with that school's officials and was "close" to leaving Minnesota to take the Arkansas gig.

Well, it's March 14, also known as, "Where will Tubby go next? Day" in Minnesota.

The rumors aren't new. Smith has been connected to Oregon, Georgia Tech and Virginia in recent years. And each time, he's dismissed the offseason speculation and returned to coach the Gophers.

Smith has been working on an extension with the Gophers. His contract, which currently pays him $1.8 million per year, expires in 2014.

If Smith left the university, he wouldn't owe it a dime, per a provision in his contract. Also, Arkansas has the country's No. 7 recruiting class, according to ESPN.com. It features five-star point guard B.J. Young.

But I talked to a source close to the program who said Smith and his staff members met Monday afternoon to talk about junior college players they hope to evaluate before the end of the late signing period. The source also said Smith wouldn't use any other job as leverage in negotiations for his extension.

After his team's loss to Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament Thursday, Smith said he was excited about his future with the Gophers, as he continues to pursue an extension with the school.

Smith, however, has expressed his discontent with the university's lack of progress on a practice facility. The university hasn't attracted significant funds to build the $15 million facility he was promised in 2007, the year athletic director Joel Maturi hired him.

Arkansas doesn't have a practice facility. But the school uses the Bud Walton Arena, which opened in 1993 and was renovated in 2008. The university's basketball offices are housed in the arena, one of the largest in the country (19,200 capacity). And I've been told that Razorbacks boosters will spend big bucks on the right coach.

But Oregon had facilities and money. Ditto for Virginia and some of the other programs that went after Smith in the past. But he stayed.

And at this point (It's 5:20 p.m. Monday), I don't have anything concrete that suggests he'll leave.

But stay tuned.

Can't wait until Myron is wrong again. He really should stay away from the rumor mill. He is wrong every year.

every year i lose more respect for Tubby because of this *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#.

So you lose respect for Tubby because the media likes to make things up?

Unfortunately, people can say just about anything now days without much or any repercussions. You can throw just about anything out there and say "a reliable source" said this and that, but no one even knows if it's just made up.

Convinced Tubby is gone

After reading this thread i am convinced now more then ever that he is gone for one reason and one reason alone:

No Friend of Tubby replies - there has not been a rumor of Tubby going that FOT has not come on and told us all how much Tubby loves it here and plans to retire here.

Where are you FOT?? Maybe he really is a friend after all. Hope i am wrong, but seeing no input from FOT troubles me.

Someone already suggested fot was on the razorback board unloading Tubby stats, over and, over and, over again.

Report per Star Telegram: Arkansas close to hiring Tubby http://bit.ly/hgT0FQ #Gophers

It's not an Arkansas paper (Ft Worth, TX).. but,...

Interesting to note that the LINK No longer links to the Mike Jones article or BLOG about Tubby and Arkansas.

Looks like the article has been pulled.

At ease.

edit:

The main article is pulled but he still mentions a "source" about Tubby and Arkansas in his Gillespie article.

Huh i click on the link and it took me to the Mike Jones article.

The article is still there and the Tubby and Arkansas stuff is still in the article.

Yeah - I just noticed that. But his main article seems to have been pulled and his rumor is now just mentioned by a "source" in the article about Gillespie.

On the one hand, this all seems based on one report, I don't think Arkansas wants him, and I don't think he's dying to go there. On the other hand that flight to Tulsa is awfully coincidental. Maturi needs to get that freaking extension done one way or the other. Either get it signed or let him leave. Enough of this crap.

If it weren't for the fact that we'll lose both Hollins, Welch and Mbakwe, I'd almost be indifferent. (That and I don't want our fool of an AD making another hiire.) But even if we get Flip, we're looking at a couple years of very bad teams if Tubby goes.

1. We don't know that he flew to Tulsa
2. If he was interviewing for the AR job, he would've flown via private jet direct to Fayetteville, not commercial and not to Tulsa.

Fair point on #1. I should have said 'if true'. Not necessarily on #2, especially if they wanted to keep it under the radar.

So if they want to keep it under the radar they have Tubby hanging out at airports in two places that he is a celebrity?

Nothing is more under cover than a private jet from an undisclosed location to an undisclosed location.

Interesting to read everyone's opinions on this. It's difficult to just wait and see, but there is no reason to rip Tubby until he actually does something. He isn't going to explain/defend himself in the media whatever happens, so we'll just have to be patient.

Yes and no. I realize it was a different era, but we never heard much about Clem even though he surely had folks sniff around after 97 if not sooner. And I think of a guy like Kevin Stalling at Vanderbilt. His name usually shows up on the list, but the rumor never goes anywhere. Why? I'm guessing because me shoots it down much more firmly than Tubby ever seems to.

It doesn't help that MN is perceived as a lesser job than it really is and that our local media actually fans the rumor mill. But Tubby almost goes out of his way not to quash the rumors, IMO.
