Anthony Grant to Interview for Job Thursday AM

I know you're an insider, and I appreciate your work. But I'm not sure youre much of an X and O's guy. He had an insane amount of talent? That is 100% not true. He had one superstar that was unselfish to the point it hurt the team.

This is probably another interesting talk for another day but take a look at the rosters he had in Minny. He did only have one true superstar but he had some darn good role players. To not take that team deep into the playoffs year after year is a crime. Then he took the Pistons to the conference finals three years in a row yet had the more talented team each time he lost. Then lets not even bring up his Wizards days hes still mentally affected the people in VA/DC over that one!

Reusse trumpeting Grant on Twitter as the best Gopher fans should expect to get.

I would take a true up-and-comer over Grant even if it means we miss out on the Big Three. At some point you have to think long term.

Grant was very successful at VCU. Much of Shaka's success is due to what Grant left behind. Just like what Pitino did for Tubby at Kentucky.

Grant may prove to be the better coach.

I'm surprised Reusse had any comments today. He had a busy day reading the 89 pages of posts on Shaka's thread. Probably got all his information from richmondinsider.

Give me a list of the talented role players he had that weren't consistently injured.

I don't think Anthony Grant would be a terrible hire, but I don't see him as an upgrade from Tubby. Flip? I think that would be a move to win the press conference. Woody and Mike have succeeded with Villa 7 guys and as much as we don't want to see it, long term that's the move that will help our program.

I am hearing a lot about Billy Gillispie. Not sure what to think, he's obviously got it done many times and with our resources and a second chance it could work. So long as he has defeated his demons.

Grant cannot hold a candle to the impact Flip would make as head coach. Pretty much everything about Flip would be an advantage over Grant.

I realize richmondinsider views him as the next John Wooden, but Grant would be a disaster of a hire for the Gophers for many reasons. (Including a drop in ticket sales, recruiting hurdles, and most of all terrible PR for an institution that badly needs help in this area).

Flip adds name recognition, which on the national level may not be favorable, but locally he is a star. For current high schoolers growing up in the upper Midwest, the only positive high level basketball in their lifetime occurred when Flip coached the Wolves.

The Wizards literally quit on Flip. Hes not in anyway hip, to this very day half his old Wizards plays WILL NOT talk to him.

good for Flip- that roster was full of knuckleheads and Flip is better off not talking to them. The only smart thing that group of players did was hide their guns in a shoe box to get past security..... oh wait, that still wasn't thought out all the way through

During Flip's time in Washington, he endured:

Getting the 5th pick (rather than the 2nd) in the NBA lottery
Abe Pollin's death.
The decision to purge salary to make the sale of the team more favorable. Traded Butler, Haywood, and Stevenson and Jamison for basically nothing as the most talented returning players in the trades were bought out.
The suspension of Arenas for his gun issue.

I would say that Flip was not exactly handed the best hand to play in Washington.

Not sure why this thread has turned into a Flip discussion but his last year in Washington was filled with nightly FIRE FLIP chants. To this day if you ask people here who ruined our Wizards they'll tell you it was 2 people. 1) Gilbert Arenas 2) Flip Saunders

More importantly, Grant and Minnesota have a large amount of mutual interest and something could be announced by Monday.

I wouldn't mind Grant, VCU's final four was mostly his recruits, even this year team still had some of his recruits on the floor. Next year will be Shaka's fourth year at the Commonwealth it'll be the first team of guys who have only played for him.

It was about as bad a situation as it could've been.

He does not get a free pass on all of these issues. . .

The getting the #5, yep, it was bad luck. Flip was also really open about trading that #5 pick for Randy Foye and Mike Miller (he didn't want to develop younger players).

He also got the #1 pick in the draft for John Wall, the consensus #1 player in the country and considered a premier prospect, that's a luxery not many teams get.

There became a huge issue in the organization that they were forced to go young. They lost Arenas for the year in January of Flip's first year (not Flip's fault) and they bottomed out and they decided to build a team around John Wall and go young. All of that was not planned when Flip was hired. But Washington was essentially forced to trade away a lot of their older players to try to rebuild. Flip was not on board with the rebuilding effort and did not do a good job while rebuilding (his short time there).

Now, do I blame Flip for Washington being so bad? Of course not. A lot of it was outside of his control. However, a lot of good coaches have made those kinds of transitions easier. Sloan did an amazing job in Utah while transitioning to no Malone and Stockton. Karl was fantastic in Denver, etc. I don't blame Flip for not being on that level. However, the red flag to me in the whole thing is that he doesn't have a strong connection with building young players and developing. He's a guy who seems to like the veterans and he always has.

As a Kentucky fan who is familiar with SEC basketball, I'm not sure why anyone would look at Anthony grant. He was a hot name a few years ago before he took the Alabama job but hasn't really done anything since getting it. Some people might say he had a good year this year, but the SEC was REALLY bad this year. As an SEC fan I hate our basketball conference, the league focuses so much on football and seems to not care about basketball at all. Grant barely gets by in the SEC, he will get killed in a better basketball conference like the Big 10. In a way I hope you guys hire him, it will force Bama to get a new coach and maybe they luck out and get some upcoming young head coach, but I think you guys should hire Flip over Grant.

lolwut? rumor is former players hate tubby so let's hire a guy that got run off at texas tech specifically because his players hated him.

remember last time we hired a former kentucky coach? that worked out well.

if billy gillispie is the best we can get just fold the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing program.

You really don't want Billy G. I respect the guys love for the game, but yeah... a lot of his former players hate the guy and he has some serious alcohol problems. He needs to go several years without any sort of "incident" before any school should take a shot at him.

Basically RichmondInsider scours through online boards and grabs rumors to represent here as facts. He adds his own personal spin to make things a little interesting but always says he has "updates". He basically insinuated Shaka to Minnesota was a done deal- but always left a caveat that it might not happen to cover his own butt.

He is no insider, may or may not have ever been on the "basketball scene" here in Richmond. It's just getting annoying. There's no more fun anymore.

Mr. Insider, at least create some drama or threaten a fight.

@AmeliaRayno: No. RT @ASportJ @AmeliaRayno Do you think Anthony Grant is Teague's second choice after Shaka?

Not true, the only Grant recruit on this year's team was a walk-on who rarely plays. Grant's last significant recruit graduated last season.

Exactly. Anybody who knows anything about Grant knows this, he is a very reserved individual. ANYBODY he's close to wouldn't even think of posting his business on a message board.

Take all of that back. As he's told all of us, nothing he said about the Shaka search has been proven false. He said it was 60% chance back to VCU. Why are you such a hater? He is an insider.

Nothing he has posted can actually be proven either. How can you prove or disprove his claim that Spike Lee called Shaka? He has basically just been throwing crap like that out there knowing you can't prove or disprove any of it. Then he throws in a tidbit or two of internet fodder to make himself seem credible.

The final tip off that's he's a fraud is that he now reveals he's "very close" to Anthony Grant. How many people are you close to who you plaster their personal business on the internet? Fortunately it seems like most of the posters here know RichmondInsider is full of it.

well spike lee was at the a10 tournament and shook shaka's hand, so it's not really a stretch to say they talked on the phone.
