Amelia rips fans who attend NIT

Some people have difficulty w/irony - I purposefully made the the OP headline inflammatory and skewed. I am not a reporter so I can do that.

Amelia has followed the time honored approach. Write straight-forward articles year one, and year two adopt a cynical negative air so that she can fit in with the media itself. This year she has made multiple errors in her reporting on game stats and generally has affected the snide tone. Some of you are ok w/that, and I'm ok w/you being ok w/it. But lets not pretend its good reporting, unless the eye test for her includes glasses on for looking and glasses off for reading. (I am not a reporter, so I can say that) As someone said, she is not a columnist.

I thought the photo selection was inaccurate reporting, although the captions were accurate, and revealed an attitude and tone approaching the whole assignment that was given more credence than the game itself. Why include a picture of a fan yawning? Of course, it does state the fan was yawning during a time out. I've been to many dull games at the Barn. This wasn't close to the top 20.

I've accommodated this well by stating glasses on for looking and glasses off for reading.
And having started this thread, I owe a response to the readers who need to know what I think about what they think. Without this important link, the world of message boarding would grind to a halt.
Thank you for understanding.

The Strib has been losing money for years as the media turns over from print to electronic news. They hired a newbie to cut costs. For the most part, Amelia's been a wallflower and essentially said nothing of much value except to regurgitate the obvious. This article is really nothing different from the pages she's put out in the past. If anything, I'd like to see her have a bit more edge to her writing. She tends to come off as uneducated about the subjects she's reporting on and therefore pandering to the administration of those teams she reports on. If I were to compare her to anything I think I'd compare her to a Matzo cracker...bland, bland, bland.
I agree I feel like most of her info especially her recruiting tidbits have been known here for at least a couple weeks.

I thought the topic was how hot she is... I'd give her a 7.5, problem is, she thinks shes a 9+.

Used to see her fairly often. She was close friends with a girl my roommate dated. We were just a group of young, drunken kids enjoying life right after college. Even so, nobody in our group had an interest. Being young, not fat, blonde, and female does not grant automatic access to the title of hot.

That said, she looks better than she writes.

You guys have high standards. She's a babe. Not a great writer though.

Just thought I'd have a heading fitting of news reporters.
Photos show a nearly empty arena BEFORE the game and the majority of attendees arrive, and includes a photo of a yawning child.

I thought the crowd who showed up was very engaged. I suspect Amelia is the one who is not, having to cover the NIT.

Moonlight, I always read with great interest your posts. I admire your input and your critiques. I agree with you that the timing of photos and the types of photos are used only to enhance a writers agenda. I could show you ALL a picture of my 5 year old daughter yawning at her Grampa'a funeral. And I could have made a one sided story of it.

Let's not get all worked up about someone doing their job. Even if it is Souhan, Sid, Reusse, PA, or any of them. If I could buy any of them for what they are worth and sell them for what they think they are worth, you and I could have a great life in the Florida Keys forever.

Listen to her on the radio and get back to me.

To be fair, any halfway decent looking woman would have a hard time concentrating when they know PA is picturing them naked during the interview. God that guy creeps me out anytime he's talking with a woman on the radio.

Thanks Dr. Don, but this is not actually about perceived worth, or AR hotness or lack thereof.

Its nature of a discussion board to be all over the map w/opinions, critiques etc. We may feel no particular onus of responsibility for releasing our opinions upon the world, and use it as an outlet for feeling powerless, crappy, excited, elated etc.. On a discussion board, we try our perspectives and see how they fly. Sometimes people respond well and +1 (or +19) a post, and other times, they raise ire and conflicts erupt.

I expect something better than message board 'postings' in the strib from their beat reporter. But everyone wants to be the next Big Thing, a personality. You frequently object to things written here, concerned about the effect. Newspapers have different responsibility, and one is to at least attempt accuracy (which she misses frequently even in numbers).
She didn't just do her job - she created an impression that because the game didn't have the meaning people want, that the place was lethargic and dull - a yawner w/people sitting alone in the rafters. It was kinda cute. And reflects how many people feel about the NIT. But is that news? Assembling pictures and comments to emphasize a perspective? This isn't a collage, it's news reporting. Of course, she's free to cut and paste and create that perspective, and I'm free to criticize it.

And people are free to criticize me here for it, and I don't expect anyone to defend me. Its just my opinion.

All that matters to me, is that this NIT Tourney is important to OUR TEAM. Because of that, it is important to me. We did not get to go Dancing, so the NIT becomes the next best in order of importance. In this article, I think Amelia underplayed the key players, and the key players are THE TEAM, not the fans.

GO GOPHERS!!!

You guys are BRUTAL!

I see Amelia at every game, and I will vouch for the fact that she's very pretty and she also works very hard on the beat. You guys aren't going to be happy with anyone...most of you hated Myron, but he can't be all that bad because he has one of the few college hoops writing job at ESPN.

I would love for all of you to post your photos and have her rate you instead!!! :)

P.S. Moonlight, you are excluded, as you back up your points and are logical.

I don't need to be excluded! I'm glad to have you stand up for her. And it isn't really Amelia. The Strib is clearly happy w/this kind of approach because that what happens w/everyone.

What you manage to do is something rare. You manage to be factual, honest, entertaining AND yet - kind. And you don't have to try to be some great personality, because you actually are! I'm glad you respect your colleagues, but don't lose what you bring to the table hanging around with them because its unique.

Attention GL, Moonlight, and Amelia: I am a fan of all of you. I am also a fan of beer. We have something in common. We like beer.

Pretty sure Amelia has Celiac's disease, so i doubt she likes beer.

This is one of the nicest things someone could say to me, thanks, friend :).

Yes, he is. He really is that bad.

Otherwise, good post.

AR's beat is astonishing to me. Last year I think the number of times her leader was "season on the brink" was in the double digits. Well, was it "on the brink", or whatever? No, because we kept losing, and yet, somehow, we ended up getting to the round of 32. This year's was "signature wins" for awhile, until some of the senior media personalities in town started making fun of the term and then her use of that overused terminology stepped back a bit.

I could say a lot more because she sort of has my dream job and yet she either talks about herself or complains the majority of the time, and mixes in (strangely incorrect) analysis and overly negative lexicon with the rest of her output. I always thought nobody else noticed because she seems so popular. She has talent as a writer, but should be doing magazines or something like that, because she clearly can't find enough to say in this format.

Side note: How long did it take to mention Maverick's night of his life? He deserved a halfway decent write up. Instead he got a couple sentences and a bullet point once she was done writing about the poor crowd and how much High Point's star player worked us over before fouling out.

I have no problem with her as a person or as a writer. For some reason, every member of the media in MN seem to have a sarcastic, snarky negative edge against (should't be for, but shouldn't be against either)the local team. Like every other media member, when the team struggles her joy is palpable, which bothers me. Objectivity can't be a defense when the pendulum has swung so far away from positivity that it is negative.

I have heard 2 interviews with PA it sounds like she does not know what basketball is. I can bet she never played the game. You could ask someone off the street about gopher basketball and they would know more.

+1

I give GL an 11.

Is Amelia also guilty of using mixed metaphors? Now THAT would be inexcusable.

As we know our media has a habit of reading the Gopherhole occasionally I must say I'm embarrassed over some of the personal comments in this thread towards Amelia.

I'll take back the "moron" comment. That was probably a little harsh.

Can't say I'm following this thread too closely, but my two cents to this topic is that I am a fan of the character that Amelia brings to the position. I don't seek out beat writers for their insight into the same game I just watched on TV (I prefer my own opinion of what happened...), but I do enjoy her interaction with fans and the incorporation of her personality (Bigfoot, whiskey, bars, etc.) into her work.

.... Gosh I wish the gophers made the NCAA so I was posting about game action instead of beat writers!
