Figured I should give a few recommendation episodes. They typically run a few 'concept' episodes per season. These are by far the best.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (LOTR theme)
Contemporary American Poultry (mafia movie theme)
A Fistful of Paintballs (western movie theme)
Epidemiology (zombie movie theme)


Just a few of the best episodes. I cannot believe that it took me this long to start watching this show. Give it a shot.
 

I'm a Sci-fi geek, so I'll check out almost any new series with a Sci-fi angle. I've been watching the show "Almost Human" on Fox. It's not bad. For those who haven't seen it, it's a buddy cop show set in the future - the twist is one of the cops is an android, who is designed to simulate human emotions. The human cop is played by Karl Urban, who plays Bones in the new Star Trek Movies. (he was also in the Lord of the Rings movies.) Worth a look if you're into that type of thing.

I've been trying to hang in there with "Revolution" on NBC, but I'm starting to get the same feeling I did with "Heroes," that the writers are making it up as they go, and don't have any long-term vision for where the show is going. The main reason I keep watching is that the younger female lead character is really hot. (what can I say - I'm a dirty old man.........)

I am a technology klutz, so I don't know how to stream movies or TV shows on Netflix. If I did, I would probably never leave my house again.....

Just finished a Dexter mini-marathon. Not sure how I feel about the ending..
 





I'm sure these series' have been covered ad nauseum but I got Netflix a couple months ago and started watching Breaking Bad. Netflix doesn't have the last 6 episodes, (wtf!?) so I was forced to watch them off the internet. Between pop ups, trojans and slow load times it pretty much ruined the series for me. In fact I never even bothered to watch the last two episodes the experience was so crappy.

I also started watching Arrested Development and absolutely love it. The writing is so clever. The acting is fantastic. I like that it's short and easy to digest. I don't feel like I can't pick up the next episode if I fell asleep at the end of the last one.

Right now I'm in the middle of an obsessive/compulsive view session of Sons Of Anarchy. I'm in the middle of season 3 right now and know there's a lot more to come, but right now I feel like the show has jumped the shark a little bit with the whole going to Belfast deal.

The last 8 episodes are missing. I was in the same situation as you, but AMC just had a Breaking Bad marathon this past week and was able to record the last 8. Just watched the final one last night. It ended just about as I thought and it was awesome.

Arrested Development was one of the best shows ever. Hilarious if you are into dry humor. Considering the seven or eight year layover......the recent netflix season was pretty good. And yes......that is still Portia de Rossi.

I'm with you on Sons of Anarchy as well. Bought the first season on blu-ray just to check it out. It's excellent. About halfway through the second season now.

Costa Rica, stay with Sons, just an awesome show. And I totally agree about the Belfast storyline, just brutal. I hated it and most people I talk to did as well, but the show picks up strong the next few seasons and the way the last season just ended is incredible. Awesome show, as obviously is Breaking Bad, so hopefully you can find a good way to view it.

I hear you on the internet deal. Can get frustrating. I did find a site, where on some series, you can just download the episode to your computer and watch it anytime.

I'm at the end of season 4 in The Sons of Anarchy. Always seems a little too overboard, but I keep watching.

Feel the same, but it's too good to stop watching. Which season is the best overall?
 

When does breaking bad get good. I think I'm 3 episodes in and it feels like the wire, sopranos and others where I hear its good but can't get passed the first few episodes.
 

My favorite SOA line...Tom Arnold as Georgie the Porn King says to Jax "You've got that Brad Pitt thing going on, but not as gay." lol

Out of the 4 seasons I've watched, this last is the best IMO. In a previous post, the way Bleed described it, gets even better.
 


Just read all 12 pages in this thread. Hadn't posted or viewed since the first page. Comments...

1. Binge-watched Breaking Bad this fall. I timed it perfectly to purchase the last 8 episodes on blue-ray the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Was worth the $30 IMO to do that. It's my favorite show of all time. Seasons 4 and 5 are the best TV I've ever watched.

2. Just binge-watched Homeland. I loved it. What's weird is Metacritic says seasons 2 and 3 are much better than the advise I got from friends and family that have watched it. I agree with Metacritic. While I thought season 1 was better than 2, season 3 was just as good as 1 IMO and 2 wasn't that bad. I concerned that season 4(coming Fall of '14) will be a letdown though, given what happened at the end of 3.

3. I was the biggest Arrested Development fan. Disappointed in season 4. It tries way too hard to be clever. The previous seasons seemed organic. Not 4. This one seems like a tangled web that the writers couldn't write themselves out of after they started mapping out the plot. It has laughs, but I'd have a hard time recommending it.

4. I'm done with Boardwalk Empire. I was hooked for the first 2 seasons but I can't even get myself to finish the most recent one. There's too much good TV that I haven't watched to waste any more time on it.

5. Mad Men is one of the few shows that my wife and I enjoy watching together (she did love BB BTW). If you have a significant other, neither of you have watched Mad Men and want a "bonding" TV experience, I highly recommend Mad Men. The first season can be a bit hard for some women to watch but my wife ended up appreciating it once I told her it was basically created and written by women.

6. Chromecast has changed my TV viewing and I love it. I have a workout room with a treadmill and a TV mounted on the wall that's not hooked up to cable and Chromecast allows me to watch whatever I want on Netflix or HBOgo while on it. Recommend the $35 purchase if you're currently streaming Netflix only on a tablet or computer.

7. I watched The Americans and Vikings in the last calendar year. The former is fantastic and looking forward to season 2 in late Feb. Vikings was good, not great. I'd put that farther down the list.

8. 2 years ago I watched the first 2 episodes of The Wire and couldn't get hooked. Everyone says it's as good, if not better than BB so I'll attempt to watch it again. Whoever said the first season is dated was correct. I think I just need to power through it. Debating whether I'm watching that next or House of Cards or Sherlock based on reading this thread.

5. Great show. Doesn't try too hard. Wife likes it as much as I do which helps.

7. We both like the Americans enough to continue on. The only reason to watch Vikings is Katheryn Winnick imo.

8. You really should give the Wire another go. Still my favorite. Wife didn't like it, so it became 'my' show.

There isn't one show, besides Community, right now that I really watch. A dead zone of sorts until Feb. I think?
 

I'm on Season 5, Episode 5 of Sons of Anarchy. There's a scene where the character enters and I could swear I knew who it was. I kept thinking Walton Googins from Justified and The Shield, but it just didn't seem to fit. It turned out to be Googins! Hilarious.

Also, I agree with Bleed, the series does get better.
 

DVR'ed the entire Breaking Bad series when it ran right after Christmas. Like others have stated, it definitely starts slow but has picked up nicely. Wife has watched it right with me which is a change.

Halfway thru season 5, about a dozen episodes left. I like it, still not sure it's close to The Wire. The wife has grown to absolutely despise who Walt has become; Skyler has always been annoying to me, along with a few other characters. I suspect it will finish up strong. Don't get me wrong, I like the show and it's been pretty entertaining, just not as good as The Wire.

IMO, The Wire had way, way better characters and probably writing as well. It was a lot easier to see the strengths and flaws of the characters, watch their progression, etc on The Wire.

Hoping to finish BB in the next several days, probably early part of next week. I'm sure it will be a solid ride. Looking forward to it!
 

That's one of the things I loved about the series. You can love or hate Walt and everyone would understand it. You can feel bad for Skyler or be very annoyed by her. You could hope they get away with it or you could hope they get caught or he dies.
 

Did anyone watch the debut of True Detective on HBO this weekend? It received critical acclaim from many different TV critics, citing the acting of Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson who are starring in this 8-episode season. The intent apparently is to have each season be its own storyline with its own actors, so HBO thinks it can line up a star cast like the first season.

We watched the first episode last night and the acting was great, but the storyline was very slow. I'm not sure if its worth sticking through the season or not. We may give the next episode a shot to see if it picks up some.

Man oh man, just finished Season 3, Episode 2 of Sherlock. Dang that was good. Loved the ending with Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons pumping out "Oh What a Night" in the background (One of my guilty pleasure songs). Sherlock really is a good guy.
 

Damn, I just gotta say, Sherlock, Season 3, Episode 3. I don't want to spoil anything. Just the scene where he won't succumb! Effing A!!! Sherlock is one bada$$. What a scene. Brilliant writing, directing, or whatever.

Recorded it, haven't watched it yet. Planning on watching last week's and this week's back-to-back, if not waiting longer and racking up a few more. Looks pretty solid.

EDIT: My office girl is deeply offended that I'm not raving about Breaking Bad. I'm not saying I don't like it, it's just not the best I've ever seen, that's for sure. One season, final 8 episodes to go. I'm sure it will finish up strong, at least I hope.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the ascendant English actor whose face looks like cut glass and whose name sounds like a belligerent hedgehog, dons the famous trench coat like a second skin in Sherlock, the cracking BBC series that returns for a third season on PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery this Sunday night. He combines the arch braininess of Basil Rathbone with the sleek efficiency of iOS7. He’s the hard drive that needs no backup, the keyboard that pushes back.

You might think I’m being glib by comparing a performance to a computer, but there’s more than a little Theodore Twombly in each of us now. The genius of Cumberbatch — and of this Sherlock overall — is in taking an immaculate premise and upgrading rather than rebooting it. Each 90-minute episode takes one of Conan Doyle’s original stories and cleverly strip-mines it for parts: “A Study in Scarlet” becomes “A Study in Pink”; “The Hounds of Baskerville” is about chemical weapons, not spooky hallucinations. Other tweaks are more natural. Martin Freeman’s Watson (now, as ever, a veteran of a messy Afghan war) is a blogger instead of a biographer; Rupert Graves’s Detective Inspector Lestrade now goes by “Greg.” (Though Sherlock, ever the people person, occasionally calls him “Graham.”) London is once again the most exciting city in the world because, thanks to immigration and the Internet, it is the world, a place where tweets and texts drop visibly from the soggy sky like raindrops..

Still, as is often the case with Sherlock, the best bits are less about plot and more about people. Gatiss has written himself a corker of a scene, a ping-pong match of high-functioning resentment between the Holmes brothers. Cumberbatch is as good as ever, deducing an entire life story from nothing but a floppy winter hat. (Next week’s episode amps Sherlock’s intuition up to 11: He identifies adulterers from their iPhone cases and the impotent from their boots.) And Freeman has never been better than he is in the opening minutes, expertly plumbing the bottomless grief of a deeply reserved man. Instead of processing his loss in a meaningful way, his Watson has embraced only superficial change in the form of an ill-advised mustache and a headlong love affair with the plucky Mary Morstan (played by Freeman’s real-life partner, Amanda Abbington). The series of scenes in which Sherlock reveals himself to his incredulous best friend (and disrupts a wedding proposal in the process) is a particular delight, a hilarious, slow-boiling farce of missed signals and split lips. Thanks to Cumberbatch’s peerless deadpan, the only thing more fearsome than Holmes’s intellect is his smile..

Glad to hear. We dropped our cable, so I haven't seen any of the new episodes. Waiting for it to air on PBS. All they said in the trailer is that it's coming "soon".
