All Things Royce White Thread UPDATED 10/25: Royce cut by 76ers

It's a little different because Barnes never went to ISU.

True.
I still think the situations are somewhat similar. Barnes held a press conference in Ames with hundreds of Cyclone fans in attendance, so his decision really disappointed Cyclone fans. ISU's coach had a son who was a teammate with Harrison. If I remember correctly, Harrison even worked out with the team a couple times, and I believe his father played for ISU and mother worked for ISU.

ISU has had plenty of transfers during the McDermott era that had success elsewhere (Wes Johnson at Syracuse--fourth pick in NBA draft, LaRon Dendy, etc).

How many of those transfers quit mid season or were suspended for committing crimes?

We actually had some players quit mid season/leave the team after committing crimes. (Carlos Boozer's little brother and Lucca Staiger come to mind.)

Not related to your prior comment, but I just want to make it clear I am not bitter with ISU fans for accepting Royce and he has been great for you guys and done everything that's been asked of him. Please don't get the impression I am attacking you or anyone for liking or supporting Royce. I am also sure he is overall a good person who made some mistakes.

As a Gophers fan and alum, I just can't cheer for a guy who did what he did to the fans, the school, and the team. And seeing that TC tattoo on his arm is just another slap in the face.

He also tied up a scholarship during one of the deepest classes in Minnesota high school history and created a circus atmosphere around the team. He did plenty to make Gopher fans bitter about what went down. Harrison Barnes chose another school over his hometown. Nothing more. From everything I've heard, he is a great kid.

DraftExpress updated their top 100 NBA prospects. Royce is now #32, and if you take a look at that list I bet you can pick out at least a few who will probably return to school.

Some notable quotes from from Chad Ford:

“No one created a bigger stir this weekend than White. . . . White showed off his LeBron James-esque (if you love him) or Boris Diaw-esque (if you’re not sure) ability to play like a point guard despite being 6-foot-8. . . . On pure talent, he’s a terrific NBA prospect. But there are concerns both on and off the court that give pause. “White did a lot to improve his stock this week and will get a serious look from NBA teams in the mid to late first round. But he’s going to have to shine in the draft workout process. Given how far he’s come already, it’s hard not to root for him.”

I know some people will say the only reason they don't think he's a first rounder is because of issues not related to basketball, but I'm curious to see what people have to say now who think he won't make it simply based off of talent.

Talent, sure he's got top 30ish talent, but they will take a deep look at his past before guaranteeing him first round money. More than his past his anxiety and fear of flying will be a huge issue. Not even being sarcastic here, Grandpa Frank can't drive him to the games.

I get all of that, but I have one serious question. Are we 100% sure that flying is going to be a serious issue? I know he didn't fly to Kentucky in 2010 because he had an anxiety attack, but was that solely caused by thought of flying? Was he by himself? Maybe if he has people with him it eases his anxiety? Or maybe it was triggered by something else completely (http://thegazette.com/2012/03/16/it...te-from-joining-the-kentucky-program-in-2010/). I know he was driven to Kentucky for their game, but could that have been more of a "better safe than sorry" approach then an actual expectation of an attack? I'm sure he's been on a planes before with all the AAU events he's played in in the past along with that game in New York his senior year. Is it at all possible that other things triggered the anxiety other than flying itself? I'm not trying to imply that I think it won't be an issue, I'm honestly curious. Maybe someone has more knowledge on this than I do.

I'm not 100% and don't have time to find the link. I thought he commented on it in a story GL interviewed him about being recruited by Kentucky and the reason he didn't fly down there to tour the campus.

Why Royce didn't go to Kentucky...

you can see for yourself.

I have a feeling if it said 'Royce White screwed the Minnesota Gophers #Gophers #TC' it wouldn't have got a retweet.

Hope he gets drafted so we can finally stop talking about him. He was a great player with no class.

Other guys getting good reviews from NBA people at the Combine today: Damian Lillard (big time), Royce White, Jeff Taylor, Terrence Ross.

“@JerryZgoda: Royce White said he sent a message thru ISU coach Fred Hoiberg to David Kahn saying he'd give his pinky toe to play for the #Timberwolves”

I think he would be a good pick at 18.

Hmm...if I wasn't also a Wolves fan I'd say take the offer. But I think we have better options at #18 than White's pinky toe.

I think he would be a good pick at 18.

He can't shoot free throws or shoot from outside constantly. At an actual 6'-7" 280lbs I don't see how he can be effective at the 3 or 4. If I were an NBA GM I wound not take him in the first round... pick 31, no risk; defiantly.

6'7" without shoes equates to being listed at 6'8" and it was 261 pounds, not 280, but drafting Royce probably doesn't make a lot of sense for the Wolves with their current roster. Just isn't a position of need. Getting a 2 or true 3 who can shoot would be more beneficial.

Royce back in Minneapolis, with millions of dollars, is an absolutely horrible idea, for both him and the Wolves. He needs to play ANYWHERE else.

He'd essentially be Gary Trent, which would not be a bad pick at 18. With Rubio he'd probably get three dunks a game and then a couple garbage buckets off the bench.

He is much quicker than any big guy Kentucky had, a couple who are going to be lottery picks, at his size with that quickness I don't see how that doesn't transfer to the pro game. He's not long like the NBA prototype but he is an exceptional athlete.

Haha, no doubt. White would be a good pick for someone like San Antonio or Oklahoma City, or maybe even Boston if KG stays.
