All Things Pitino rumor mill thread

It wouldn't surprise me if they interviewed (or at least contacted) Richard. It would surprise me if they offered him the job.

It may not be beyond the realm of possibility that a program as lofty as Florida may opt for a one year interim deal if the ideal long term candidate is not there for them. It's awfully late in the cycle and most of the best guys have gotten snapped up. I would think they would go for the moon and failing that go with Grant for a year. Maybe I'm just wishing.

IMO, being a former Donovan assistant, Shaka would have been a great fit for this job.

Florida made 5 Final Fours and 8 elite 8's from 1994 to 2014. Not to mention the two national titles. Classifying it as 'recent' and 'ripe to not produce' is as wishful as saying the same thing about Wisconsin football. It's a top 15 job and we're....not.

I mean, I wouldn't expect Florida to completely fall off the map basketball-wise if Donovan leaves, but I am interested to see what happens when some of these places that experience a 10-20 year run of success under one coach lose that coach, like Florida, or Wisconsin, or maybe even Syracuse or Michigan State.

After looking it up, it looks like Florida basketball was kind of trash before Donovan. Before him, they have one SEC championship and three tournament appearances, two of which were vacated. Their vacated appearances were a sweet 16 and round of 32. That means they had never officially won an NCAA tournament game before Donovan. So it seems that before Donovan, they were almost never even above average. It doesn't seem entirely ridiculous that they could go downhill if they don't make the right hire.

It's probably a pretty attractive job if Donovan leaves, but it was only with Donovan that Florida basketball has ever been good, and obviously they've done very well with him.

Also I'm not sure if it's what you were implying, but I don't believe Wisconsin is a top 15 job in college football.

Texas nor Alabama ever contacted Richard. If Grant is not hired on a permanent basis he would follow Donovan. Florida will look to hire someone who has proven they can win.

And you know this how? I don't believe Texas ever did as it seemed they were all in on Shaka but wouldn't be at all surprised if Alabama reached out. I think Archie Miller will be their top target.

builtbadgers basically views Tony Bennett as every school's top choice. If he is correct in that assumption Texas never contacted Richard Pitino and they weren't all in on Shaka and is now posting Bennett will turn down Florida. My guess would be Texas all in on Shaka.

Also would lean towards Archie Miller as Florida's top target.

not every school but darn near. Basketball people (people making a living from it) view him as a coaching superstar. Every AD feels strongly about that.

Not really. Played a long time ago (1960's) and then joined a Law Firm where we represented coaches and Athletic directors. Have stayed close to the guys that came after me as well as my former clients and it is very apparent when someone is highly thought of and when someone has an agent and is puffing up their client.

per Athlons: 13 Potential Coaching Candidates to Replace Billy Donovan at Florida

Richard Pitino, Minnesota

Donovan did a good job of sending assistants to bigger and better jobs, but few of them would be realistic candidates. Shaka Smart just left VCU for Texas. Anthony Grant and John Pelphrey returned to Donovan’s staff because they were fired at Alabama and Arkansas, respectively. Matt McCall is 33 and was just hired at Chattanooga. That leaves Pitino, who was a Florida assistant for two seasons in between stints working for his father at Louisville. The 32-year-old Pitino is 14-22 in the Big Ten at Minnesota but led an impressive one-year turnaround in his first head coaching gig at FIU.

CBS: Who should/will Florida hire to replace Billy Donovan as coach?

Minnesota's Richard Pitino is another young, logical name to consider, given he spent time as a Florida assisant from 2009-2011, has a father with big-time connections ... who happens to be Donovan's former coach. Pitino has the least amount of experience (three years) as a head coach of any realistic candidate.

I'm really surprised that Pitino is making all these lists today. What am I missing here? I'm either really over-valuing the job at Florida or under-valuing the job Pitino has done at Minnesota.

It's primarily because he was an assistant under Donovan there. Same way if Rick left for the NBA you'd hear Richards name for Louisville where as if Izzo left MSU there'd be no mention at all.

per Pat Forde:

Donovan is likely to endorse assistants Anthony Grant and John Pelphrey as his successor – but both already have been fired from an SEC job (Grant at Alabama this year, Pelphrey at Arkansas in 2011). Expect Minnesota coach and former Donovan assistant Richard Pitino to make a push for the position. Smart would have been a slam-dunk candidate, but he cast his lot with Texas.

So Foley's search could well widen beyond the Donovan family tree. If it does, Archie Miller of Dayton would certainly merit strong consideration.

I understand why Pitino makes the list as a candidate but I can't see anyway he gets this gig unless he is the one making the push. You would have to think his name if on the AD's list is far down the in the rankings.

Florida is a high enough profile job that there could very well be name coaches throw their hat in the ring that are not even being thought of as a possibility at this point.

Assuming Florida doesn't hire Richard, the timing of Donovan moving on couldn't have been better for us.

Agreed. Plus, not sure how many schools have scholarships still, but those Florida kids may need somewhere to go :)

That's hard to say. But Pitino, regardless of results right now, is of incredible value to retain at least one more year at Minnesota. We have 5 incoming 2015 recruits and another pending (unknown). If we had a mass or even partial exodus based on Pitino leaving - this would be a major mess. I really like our future if he stays and sees this through.

Pitino has an agent with connections and his father probably helps as well. It is really quite laughable.

That said, a good year next year or the year after and he is gone. Clearly someone is shopping him.

That's fine. I want the good year first- then it's a job well done. Who knows, maybe a good year encourages him to stay??

Orlando Sentinel: Who will the Gators hire to replace Billy Donovan?

Richard Pitino, Minnesota head coach: The son of Donovan’s mentor, Rick Pitino, served two seasons as a Gators’ assistant (2009-11) before joined his father in Louisville for a season as an associate head coach.

Like Donovan, Richard Pitino became a head coach at a young age. In 2012, he replaced Isiah Thomas at FIU at the age of 29.

Pitino just completed his second season at Minnesota, where he is 43-28. The Golden Gophers won 25 games and the NIT in 2014. But last season, Minnesota slipped to 18-15, including 6-12 in the Big Ten.
