All Things Pitino rumor mill thread

Sure it seems like UF could do better, but often we think that and schools end up 'settling' for far less. Their football job is even better and they got the coach from Colorado State. Plus Billy will likely recommend him.

I'd say there's a 25% chance they offer it to him and 90% chance he takes it if they do. The odds are still against it, but this is the first time in the 69 pages of this thread that it's a real possibility.

Comparing Jim McElwain's experience and reputation in football vs. Richard Pitino's experience and reputation in basketball is like night and day.

Correct. I doubt Florida will have any interest in this Pitino this year.

I still think the U is a better job after you build it up. UF recruiting would lose some of its luster without Donovan. It already has seen a slight drop and a new unproven coach would not be as much of a draw. A top tier school in the B1G is better than Kentucky's step-sister in the SEC. Florida is ripe for a coach to go in and not produce up to expectations. It is only a recent top tier BB school and without Donovan it is ready to slide back down.

Sure, if you make the U much, much better than it is now and make Florida much, much worse, the U is a better job. That's the case for practically any pair of Power 5 schools in the country.

1 % chance they offer it to Pitino. Most likely handing it off to Anthony Grant. If not, then Archie Miller has a much better resume and proven reputation then Pitino. Richard has a great chance to prove himself with the job he has.

Recent? As in 25 years recent? Billy D has been there almost 20 years, and they had a Final Four appearance under Lon Kruger in the early 90s.

Don't forget that Richard already was an assistant there and the Foley, the AD, really is fond of him. Better weather, better recruiting base, and easier conference would definitely be enticing. I think Richard would be a fool to turn them down if UF offers.

Have to agree there unfortunately. Alabama wasn't that concerning, this however, is. I could see Florida looking at Anthony Grant too. Hopefully Pitino stays, but this is a move I couldn't fault him for.

You'd be a fool to turn them down too. But like you, Richard won't get an offer from them.

If Florida has to hire a new coach it would be quite the surprise if the hire ended up being Richard Pitino.

“@ESPNSteinLine: Going online now: ESPN sources say Thunder & Billy Donovan nearing agreement to make him next OKC coach, with announcement likely THU or FRI”

If Richard goes, he goes. I'm OK. Shaka gets a second chance at this primo job. Is there a place called the Vu or something?

“@GoodmanESPN: If Donovan does leave Gainesville, no slam dunk choice as his successor at Florida. Two names to watch: Chris Mack and Archie Miller.”

I look at this as a positive. I can't imagine Pitino getting the job at Florida now and it's unlikely to be available again for at least another 4-5 seasons.

If Miller and then Mack turn it down...then it probably gets real.

That's a good point.

If chris Mack goes, any chance JP Macura would look to transfer? I know from talking with people back during his recruiting process, his family was very interested in Wisconsn, but badgers showed little interest, but that could be different now.

Experience, sure. But both are/would be relative 'meh' hires relative to the expectations.

Florida made 5 Final Fours and 8 elite 8's from 1994 to 2014. Not to mention the two national titles. Classifying it as 'recent' and 'ripe to not produce' is as wishful as saying the same thing about Wisconsin football. It's a top 15 job and we're....not.

So there's only a 1% chance they offer it to an up and coming former Donovan assistant that he's fond of, but they are going to offer it to a former Donovan assistant who just got fired by Alabama? Whatever chance Richard has, it's at least as good as Grant's.

I realize Grant was hired as an assistant at Florida, but I don't think a school like Florida would make their fan base very happy if they hired him after he was just fired. I'm not sure why so may think he's a very likely candidate.

I think it's kind of hilarious when Minnesotans try to convince themselves that the weather in MN is better than the weather in Florida unless they truly do prefer the freezing cold. Nobody outside of MN would possibly say that. The weather in MN is only better for a few months, and it's not like MN isn't humid in the summer too.

Experience, sure. But both are/would be relative 'meh' hires relative to the expectations.

And reputation, not to mention results. McElwain was a solid hire for Florida. Pitino would be a "oh my God, what are they doing, I'm going to burn my Gator jersey"-type hire.

Up and coming to who ? Grant was hired for a reason. They will make the quiet calls to Tony Bennett (he will decline) and then Miller, maybe Mack. long, long way down any athletic directors list before they get to Pitino.

Saw on Twitter a possibility of Grant following Billy to OKC
