All Things Pitino rumor mill thread

How many guys from the NE do you think will want to play it Alabama?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Probably about as many as would want to play here. And in case you aren't aware of this, there are good players in Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and even Alabama too.

Is that why he's only offered one player from Minnesota in the current recruiting class and appeared to make only a perfunctory run at last year's group? He throws the verbal bone to the sentimental tribal types here and there ("securing the borders"), but the evidence so far doesn't indicate that he puts much priority on recruiting in-state.

With AAU and how many games, tournaments, traveling these kids do, they are making decisions and building relationships as 8th and 9th graders. Pitino is working hard with the MN 2016 and beyond kids.

His incoming class is a good one based upon his track record. It will only get better as he build up a reputation.

How many guys from the NE do you think will want to play it Alabama? Alabama is a one trick pony and basketball is not in the saddle.

Guys, as of NOW Minnesota is a zero trick pony.....Bama is a one trick Pony with the Pony's name being Secretariat ..I say Pitino stays but let's not be delusional
this program is a long way from being a even a top 40 BB job in the USA. If he decides to leave it is a reflection on the culture of the AD department and his ability to recruit and win here vs Bama.

I did not predict what would be a final outcome. Just that his camp is attempting to raise his profile in a way that is not helpful or loyal to what they set out to do here. He has not built one thing to this point. If they can get 3 million from Alabama plus the buyout all the power to them. The focus should be on the task at hand and one that would be left worse then the one you found. Prove you can win here. I think he can but it requires support on every level and these tactics push people away at a time when the program needs support. look at how Bennett handles his business. Turns down Texas at 3.5 before it can even become a story. Same at LSU,Marquette and INDIANA when the actual offer was there. This begins to smell bad as it reveals this notion when this is a good way of doing business where your dealing with young people, education, alumni and boosters. those are your stockholders. Do what you were hired to do

What would you define as a "perfunctory run"? He literally went down to the last second with Travis.

per Marcus:

Team had a workout Tuesday; how interested is Alabama in Pitino?

The Tide were considering Pitino among other candidates after they fired Anthony Grant on March 15. He was “in the mix” for the job before Alabama athletics director Bill Battle reportedly met with Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall on Monday, according to Yahoo. But Marshall hasn’t publicly stated whether he is or is not interested in Alabama yet.

So where does it all go from here?

Pitino and his staff were in Minnesota on Tuesday. Players were working out at the Bierman athletic complex. The Gophers’ coaches and administration are expected to head off to Indianapolis for the Final Four coaches convention that starts Thursday.

If the Bama message boards and Twitter are any indication, Roll Tide will riot if they hire Pitino. I thought this tweet was funny:

So, Marcus basically tells us jack. Says Pitino was in the mix, but since they reached out to Marshall (who "no way in hell" will take the Bama job), he's basically a 3rd or 4th choice at this juncture. And he goes on to state that he's currently in MN. What deep insight.

Actually Marshall is weighing their offer. Looks like Wichita has countered and he's deciding. Not a "no way in hell" at all.

“@ESPNAndyKatz: Gregg Marshall’s decision should be by end of weekend. Give Wichita State credit. Shockers doing everything they can to try to keep him.”

Marshall out, will this turn up the heat for Pitino:

Looks like we can lock this thread. Finally! Richard isn't headed to Wichita.

I'm so sick of this....

It would be a little more palpable if he deserved this kind of chatter and if it was a legit step up rather than the arguably variety.

Wake me up when it's over.

I agree. I like the guy and I think he will be successful here but going through this 2 years in and we haven't even made the tourney is a bit much.

Is this based on the perception (or reality) that this is such a miserable place to live and work that only a fool would pass up the opportunity for essentially a lateral move to a backward southern state? Am I the only one - even in this forum - who sees the merit of staying in this community on their own accord? Could it really be true that both Tubby's and Richard's wives absolutely hate it here? Pardon my drama queen reaction to all this, but I'm truly struggling to understand what's going on here.

I feel the same way. It doesn't make any sense.

I don't get it either. Is the practice facility really the absolute be all and end all? Because that and $$ are the only upgrades Alabama can offer. In exchange you get a crappy, disinterested fan base and you have to live in Alabama.

Prohm seems like a home run for them.

Agree. If I were Alabama's AD, I might be thinking something along the lines of...."Now let's see, on the one hand we're looking at Coach A here, who's an extremely bright young coach. He's 40 years old, and in 4 seasons has put up a W-L record of 104-29 (.780) at his mid-major school, including putting up a 31-2 record and leading his team to a #9 national ranking in the 2012 season. Not only that, but this coach also happens to be an Alabama alumnus, in fact he started his coaching career by serving as an assistant coach/student manager for the Alabama basketball team for 5 seasons. Hmmm."

"And on the other hand we've got Coach B, also young and with great potential. He's had some positives and some negatives, some ups and some downs in his very brief career, but he has displayed a knack for recruiting and he does have great bloodlines. However, realistically speaking, based upon his career so far, the only thing which has him in consideration for this job as well as the only thing which landed him his current job is his last name above all else. Again, hmmm."

I mean seriously, which would you pick? Give me the fricken successful alumnus every time, because if Pitino would leave here for Alabama after only two seasons (while leaving this team in a state of semi-shambles), then he'll have already been proven to have the characteristics of a mercenary, so what's to keep him from doing the same thing to Alabama two, three, four years down the line?

To me the choice between these two coaches would be an absolute no-brainer.

“@GophersNow: A source told me late Wednesday night they don’t think Pitino is going anywhere. We’ll see who Alabama goes after next. #Gophers”

per Sid;

Pitino might leave

Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague is going to have to come up with some great incentives to keep men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino if Pitino is offered the job at Alabama.

The Crimson Tide already has a great basketball facility and a hotbed of talent in Alabama. It can offer more money, and have a much better chance of putting together a winner than Pitino currently has with the Gophers.

Looking at the Final Four, it’s hard to believe the Gophers beat Michigan State at East Lansing this season, despite the poor year they had. The Spartans turned their season around after the loss to the Gophers, including Sunday’s Elite Eight victory over Louisville, a team that handled the Gophers in the season opener in Puerto Rico.

Yup. Get the practice facility done and these rumors stop. Some people also hate suffering through brutal winters for 4-5 months of the year. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
