All Things Pitino rumor mill thread

Speculation? Of course. Malarkey? Absolutely not.

A guy who is focused on his current gig puts a quick end to public speculation about a lateral move unless he is trying to decide which situation best sets him up for the big job. Otherwise it's too damaging to recruiting and his reputation.

Rumors spouted every season while Tubby was here that he was leaving for another job. How many times did he come out and say he was staying?

Not one that I recall. Usually we found out when someone else took the job. That could not have helped recruiting the last few years.

Exactly. For jamiche's statement to be true I'd like to go back and look at what many of these other coaches that grew there programs from nothing did every time their names came up.

Malarky, might be the wrong word, but in my defense I'm so sick of this speculation on both ends of the spectrum. None of us know what's in Pitino's head, whether or not he put his name out there or if he's listening to offers. Both sides are completely plausible yet none of them are more likely than the next.

It's just a bunch of bullsh1t.

The fact that we had to deal with those types of rumors after mediocre seasons is one of the things that bothered me the most about Tubby's regime. I also think his recruiting classes started to suffer as a result. How could it not be an impact?

If not the Alabama job this year, who comes calling next year? How could that not be a factor for the current recruits, 2016 recruits, etc. etc.

Maybe Pitino plans on only signing one and done players from here on out who won't care if he leaves?

I think Tubby always had his eye on a better situation. Nothing materialized because of his age and because he didn't get much done here. Pitino is obviously at a very different point. As a friend of mine said yesterday, he and pops may not want the optics of a third season with no tourney. He has the power to stop the rumors.

Two comments

1) Prohm signed a contract extension 5 days ago. No reason to sign that if he was interested in the Alabama job.

2) I look at the buyout of Pitinos contract to be $2M ($1.5m buyout + forgoing a $400K payment next year + refunding the U for the FIU buyout). Correct me if I'm wrong. Would the $2M figure be scare ADs away when taking account his resume?

Why is that uh oh?

Because of the jump people would make to "Pitino to Florida" speculation because of his connection to Billy D. Jeremy Foley is known as a great AD, but I don't think he's crazy enough to hire an unproven coach to take over one of the top programs in the country.

Has Shaka signed on the dotted line at Texas yet ?

Call his bluff. Operate from a position of strength. Tell him he did not earn a raise and that he is not entertaining other offers. This crap hurts recruiting and the Uof M. he will eventually have to win to get one of the big jobs. Why not try and build your own. That is actually what he was hired to do here.

After next season we're safe unless Minot State ponies up.

My nephew's roommate said his cousin saw Richard at a Waffle House just outside Gainesville about an hour ago.

This thread is great to come home to. There is nothing like cracking a beer, and reading people in full hyperbolic, meltdown over nothing.

Please, carry on.

Is this based on the perception (or reality) that this is such a miserable place to live and work that only a fool would pass up the opportunity for essentially a lateral move to a backward southern state? Am I the only one - even in this forum - who sees the merit of staying in this community on their own accord? Could it really be true that both Tubby's and Richard's wives absolutely hate it here? Pardon my drama queen reaction to all this, but I'm truly struggling to understand what's going on here.

This. I just don't get it and all of the incessant negativity, nor do I get why the national media always thinks our coaches should leave. Why or for what? It's very tiresome.

That said, it doesn't help that great Minnesota coaches have not come back to the state to coach the Gophers. Something like that would quell this problem.

It's a damn shame that Clem allowed that scandal to happen; I don't recall anywhere near this level of negativity toward the U from the national media back then. Of course, our own media doesn't help, nor does it help to have a jackass like Myron operating for national sports media.

Meltdown? A lot of posts, to be sure. And this thread has brought me back to the bb side for the first time in a while. It's interesting and timely. But I don't sense anger or even much frustration from many here, except for those who wish we would stop talking about it.

A friend and I were joking recently that a trailer home in Florida is nicer than a 9,000 square foot mansion in Edina in January and February.
You can joke about it but: No. Way. I hate Florida. A realtor in our neighborhood worked the Twin Cities and Ft. Meyers markets before the bubble burst. His partner was a nurse and worked in the Coral Gables hospital (where Sir M. waited for 6 hours in the ER to be seen). He said when people asked him what the best thing was about Florida, his response was, "Its proximity to the United States." He and his partner had a pact that they would have the other medi-lifted out in case of illness.
Now, a trailer home in San Diego...thats another story!

per Sid:

• Gregg Marshall, the Wichita State basketball coach who turned down an offer from Alabama, got a raise from $1.75 million to $3 million per season to stay with the Shockers. Word is that Alabama is going to offer in the area of $4 million per season to whomever they sign as a head coach.

Gophers head coach Richard Pitino still is rumored to be a target for the job, and he is currently making $1.2 million per season and will get a $400,000 bonus if he is still coach in 2016.

That's fine to do if you don't care if he leaves and you don't think it will damage your program. The fact is that Minnesota hired him as an up and comer at a very low salary package by Big Ten standards. I hate it that Pitino is likely using leverage like this as I agree it does hurt recruiting. However, this is a business from both sides. If Pitino has a chance to dramatically increase his salary by doing this- I get it. If Teague thinks he has to play ball with Pitino to reach the U's goals - that's business. It's ugly at times but that's the way it is. Teague may have to make a business decision at some point, but if he does it should include handcuffs that prevent a future re-occurrence.

there is not a chance in hell Alabama would pay Pitino 4 per year. That is more then they offered Bennett or Marshall

Word on the street is that Pitino isn't happy with the facilities, the cold doesn't sit well with him and recruits, and the media doesn't play ball like they do at other schools. He is disappointed that he didn't make the tourney this year because he would have leveraged that to get out immediately. He covets the Florida job and thought it would open up because he knew Billy D was on his way out to potential NBA jobs months ago. Now he is likely stuck here for another couple years, and he doesn't like it.

Some of that may be true but give me a break about the weather thing. It's no warmer in East Lansing, Ann Arbor or Madison and recruits handle it just fine. That's a total cop out.

So what is your source? I personally don't think Pitino is going anywhere, but if any of this is true he is an idiot! Every school has its weakness and he is getting new facilities soon. Would he really think that a first year unproven coach could just walk in and get any player he wants? It takes time and work to build a program and he should know that. You don't quit so early in the process without accomplishing anything. How would you ever expect another school to trust you?
