All Things New Gopher Uniforms/Helmets Thread: UPDATED 1/20 with New Uniforms!!!

Are we going to get the 'funky' pro-combat uniforms still as well?? I know there were rumors of pro-combats awhile back, but the new uniforms use the pro-combat technology. I wasn't sure if this is what they meant or we'll still get a the crazy designed pro-combats as well.

Not this season per Nike reps. Key quote from the link:
Nike officials said that Minnesota will not have a Pro Combat jersey design this year, but that they would be open to the idea in the future if U of M football staff expressed interest.

Ah, I thought we were getting the "funky" ones too for a game this year. Oh well, I like the ones we got regardless.

There were rumors that we'd get them but nothing with a source or link. This is actually the first time I recall seeing a post or article that involved someone talking to the U or Nike that included a direct reference to "one time" Pro Combats.

Hello Gopher fans - If anyone is in the market for a Full Size 2012 Helmet, I've got one listed on ebay. As a hobby I customize helmets for my own collection. But after building a few MSU pro combat helmets (yes, I'm a Spartan) and selling them I decided to branch out and try some other teams. I'd love to hear any feedback you might have, it was fun doing the research behind the design elements that went into your new uniform/helmet.

Holy mother of Christ, that's awesome work. How?!

Thanks! I'll buy brand new helmets from Riddell and then customize them up with the right texture, paint color, and decals. Here's a couple of different MSU pro combat helmets that I did and the rest of my Spartan helmet collection that I've put together over the years. A little tidbit of info: Michigan State actually had a winged helmet design a few years before Michigan (or Princeton) did. The Black and Gold MSC helmet debuted in 1934.

Was it ever confirmed that there are no helmet stickers? I noticed in the Boddy interview there was a nice chart behind Claeys, and was wondering that was to chart stickers, or just goals per game.

Definitely interested! Where did you get the decals from?

I sent you a PM (I think it was sent out, I'm not used to this message board. Let me know if you didn't get it)

On the decals - I have them made up for me by a sports decal company that specializes in football and baseball helmet decals. The only downside is that you have to buy a minimum order quantity to get them custom made. That can get costly if you're only going to do one helmet.

I don't really care either way, but producing these is probably illegal, and selling them is almost certainly illegal, correct?

Maybe not. I don't think he is claiming they are an officially licensed product or anything. He openly advertizes that they are just a replica made by himself to resemble a college teams helmt. What is wrong with that? Maybe it is though too. I don't know for sure. Maybe he needs permission to produce replicas for sale.

The very fact that they aren't an officially licensed product is exactly what (I presume) makes them illegal. You can't use trademarked/licensed logos on something (without paying any branding fees, of course) and then sell those items for a profit. If it were legal, I could mass-produce Gopher apparel that looks official for a few bucks per T-shirt/hat, set up a stand outside Williams or Mariucci or TCF on game day, sell them for $8-10/pop, and roll in the dough. I'm pretty sure selling them on eBay (or wherever) doesn't change the argument.

A side note about the helmets. If you go to a spring practice, they'll have a helmet to look at on the check-in desk.

The old rule was that the visiting team had to provide "a contrast." Then at some point, the NCAA changed it to white. LSU regularly wears its road uniforms at home, though - don't know how they manage that. I've also seen them wear their home (colored jersey) uniforms on the road!

You can get waivers from the NCAA I think.

I think (and cannot back up) that each team must have a colored jersey and a white jersey and the home team gets to pick their jersey and the away team must provide the opposite. General convention is that white is away, but there are exceptions like LSU. I seem to recall some southern teams wearing "road" jerseys at home for games in hot weather so they stay cooler.

The home team picks the uniform they want to wear, the road team wears white or home uniform if they visit LSU or Gerogia Tech. Georgia tech actually has two different white jerseys, one for home, one for the road.

The road team can wear color (USC v. UCLA for many years) but they will sacrifice a time out.

Granted, it's basketball, but I remember looking at the screen and wondering exactly how Witchita State got away with wearing light gray opposite Creighton. Creighton even has a gray stripe in their uniform. Not a lot of "contrast" there in my book.

I don't understand the reasoning for that, I don't think many people are watching on a black and white tv.

I think the NCAA changed the rule after the USC vs. UCLA brought their tradition back in 2008 or 2009. But now teams must agree to it beforehand in order to not lose the timeout.

You are correct. Here is the rule from the ncaa rule book:

Contrasting Colors
ARTICLE 3. a. Players of opposing teams shall wear jerseys of contrasting
colors. Players on the same team shall wear jerseys of the same color and
design.
1. The visiting team shall wear white jerseys; however, the home team
may wear white jerseys if the teams have agreed in writing before the
season.
2. If the home team wears colored jerseys, the visiting team may also
wear colored jerseys, if and only if the following conditions have
been satisfied:
(a) The home team has agreed in writing prior to the game; andFR-32 Rule 1-4 / The Game, Field, PlayeRsand equiPmenT
(b) The conference of the home team certifies that the jersey of the
visiting team is of a contrasting color.
3. If on the kickoff at the start of each half the visiting team wears a
colored jersey in violation of the conditions specified in Rule 1-4-3-
a-2 (above), it is a foul for unsportsmanlike conduct.
PENALTY—Administer as a dead-ball foul. 15 yards at the succeeding
spot after the kickoff. If the kickoff is returned for a
touchdown, the penalty is assessed either on the try or
on the succeeding kickoff, at the option of the home team
[S27].
b. A white jersey is one with only contrasting playing numbers, player’s
name, school name, NCAA Football logo, school insignia, conference
insignia, mascot insignia, game insignia, memorial insignia or the
American flag attached. An insignia must not exceed 16 square inches
in area (i.e., rectangle, square, parallelogram), including any additional
material (e.g., patch). Stripes may be placed on the sleeves. A border not
more than 1 inch wide around the collar and cuffs is permissible, as is a
maximum 4-inch stripe along the side seam (insert from the underarm to
pants top).
c. If a colored jersey contains white, it may appear only as a number,
border of a number, player’s name, school name, stripes on the sleeves,
a border not more than 1 inch wide around the collar and cuffs, a
maximum 4-inch stripe along the side seam (insert from the underarm to
pants top), or as part of a legal insignia (Rule 1-4-3-b).
d. If worn, gloves or hand pads must be gray in color on the back, including
the backs of the fingers. It is strongly recommended that the palms also
be gray; however, black on the palms is acceptable. The recommended
shades of gray are Pantone Cool Gray 8C, Cool Gray 9C, 423C and
430C.
PENALTY [b-d]—One charged team timeout per half
