All Things New Gopher Uniforms/Helmets Thread: UPDATED 1/20 with New Uniforms!!!

So I was re-watching the latest video of them.. And I was wondering if anyone else thought that the block M looked bigger on the new helmets? It kinda seems like its a tad bigger than it was the last year.
I totally agree. The M on this new hemlet is definitely slightly larger, taller. Look at the helemts from this year and the M looks shorter and more squished down than the new one.

@GoldenGopherFB: If you want your own new Gopher helmet look for mini helmets featuring the new look to be available sometime this spring

Go Gophers!!

Remember all the great recruits Indiana got when they had black on their helmets? I think they went to 11 straight Rose Bowls.

@GopherRB22 Based off the way the new #GopherHelmets look, Black jerseys will be apart of the arsenal next season..

Go Gophers!!

Maybe it's just me, but I'm confused when the facemask and some bumpers became a "dominant" part of the helmet or uniform.

Kinda wondering the same thing. I barely notice the facemask in the first place, whether it's black or maroon, I can barely tell the difference.

I like that matte finish and darker maroon but wish they would've used a maroon face mask. Hate when teams go with black for the sake of black...... we have school colors for a reason stick to them.

A Badger, really? WTF?! Ohio State has a nut as their mascot for God's sake and have one of the most profitible athletic departments and largest fan bases in the nation.

Imagine how well they would perform with black uniforms instead of those cheap scarlet and grey clown costumes.

Maybe it's just the uniform collector and critic in me. I tend to notice every aspect of the unis and am critical of them. I don't like having black as part of our uniform colors, just my opinion. Again, I like the new helmet. The matte finish and more true maroon color is great. I would prefer to not see black as any part of our jersey/pants. If "younger" people and kids like them and it creates a larger fan base and we get better recruits, I'm all for it (winning solves this more than uniform or mascot changes). It will not alienate me as an "older" fan (I'm 41), I simply won't care for the uniforms as much. I liked the Mason era uniforms the best in the modern era (post 70s).

If the only black elements are the facemask, shoes, and gloves, it will be a minor annoyance at worst.

But we're talking about Nike, so it's safer to expect a mostly black uniform described in nonsensical marketing speak as "battle arsenal extreme force attack armor."

We're also talking about something the U has to approve, which means its likely IMO that we're talking about some sort of black trim at worst. How something like that gets executed determines whether it looks good or not.

I'd expect a maroon/gold/white set of jerseys for sure. If black sneaks in anywhere besides trim I bet it is in the pants on the alternate. Just my guess.

I hope we get an all-black uniform so half of gopherhole has a coronary :) Kidding people

On another note...someone made this comment on facebook:

"So now that we'll have new jerseys does that mean that the athletic department will actually sell authentic jerseys like every other team?"

and Minnesota Gophers responded with:
"We think you'll be happy guys - there are plans in the works to make it happen!"

For those like like to rock jerseys...good news!

I view the black color on uniforms/helmets similar to white. Nobody seems to care when we wear white uniforms.

I imagine they looked at different colors for the facemask and this is what they felt appeals most to high school and college kids. That's ultimately what matters most.

White jerseys are mandatory for away games. It only makes sense to incorporate a color that you're required to wear.

Black is as optional as it is hackneyed.

I wonder if this thread will grow to be the size of "oops, wrong forum" ????

Ummm...what? I think you have taken one too many 2x4's to the head. White is required to be worn by one team unless they apply for a waiver from the NCAA, see USC v. UCLA or Utah v. BYU. So it is totally different.

Come on Stan black would be a great alternate worn just once a year!

Parski, we are going to have to agree to disagree. I strenuously object! A great alternate once a year would be the 1960 unis and helment combo.

Maroon on Black=Awful

All the black supporters are forgetting one very important detail. Black and maroon DO NOT look good together. The facemask looks decent because it is a little bit of black with a lot of maroon. However, harken back to black Gopher uniforms of the past and they just did not look good. Hockey, men's b-ball had black unis and they were probably the worst we have ever seen. Why would a black football uni be any different?

Agreed. An example:

And before anyone is dumb enough to suggest black and gold...seriously, just think about it again before you suggest it hmmmmm?

There are a couple of ways black could work, some better than others. Black pants would probably look ok, though something tells me only during a night game. Black accents should be fine, but how they are implemented determines how well. The best look would limit black to shoes, gloves, etc.

I hope you're kidding.

I'd agree for the most part. If the maroon is dark enough, that can act as your "black" color. Take away accents and outlines and you get a very spartan, tough look, IMHO. Black can be a nice accent with the gloves, socks, shoes, etc., if needed. Based on nothing other than looking at the other Nike redesigns (outside of Oregon), I'd be surprised if they went all black with a regular every game jersey, unless it's something the Minnesota staff really pressed them to create.

I too am not expecting a "standard" black jersey. Just hoping they don't push it into the "alternate". A gold jersey should continue to be the "alternate".

Your comment about the maroon is why black accents don't worry me too much.

Given our rivalry with Iowa, I don't think a lack jersey is going to happen. The only way that would look good is a black and gold jersey (see bball team's new black and gold jackets). I would like to think Kill, athletics, and the equipment managers would realize this.

Black looks aggressive on the facemask. It blends well with the rest of the helmet. No doubt Nike tried many options. Since black is on the helmet, it will no doubt be repeated elsewhere. My guess is it will appear as black socks, shoes, and probably a compression shirt. I have faith in the Nike designers to not screw this up. We aren't Oregon. We are not likely to give them free range to experiment. Not to mention oregon's unis are designed based on suggestions from the current players.

That's my assumption (and hope) too. Those warmup jackets throw me for a loop whenever I see them. Uck.
