All Things JP Macura Thread UPDATED 7/11: GOPHERS offer JP!

One thing that bugs me a little bit is he has somewhat of a low release point on his shot. I think Macura will be a fall back option if they can't bring in a shooter that's more highly regarded and more athletic.

His jump shot looks a little weird to me, but it goes in so no complaints. Kind of a lower version of Jordan Hulls shot.

However, the low release is okay if it is quick. Blake never had a high release, but he got that thing off fast. Ray Allen is the prime example. Really low release, but super fast.

Huh?

You think Ray Allen has a high release!?!?!

Haha yes? Hoffarber's isn't exactly low either. I just looked at video to confirm and can't imagine how anyone could describe it as low. It is very clearly above his head.

How can this be described as a low release? Can you tell me someone who has a higher release?

While we're at it, here's Hoffarber's shot. The point at which the ball is released is high, therefore he has a high release.

Blake had a higher release and got his shot off significantly quicker than Macura. Interestingly enough, in those highlights at least, Macura seemed to get the ball off quicker off the dribble than he did spotting up. A comparison on release point/style of shot might be Shane Schilling. Shane shot off to the right and from his shoulder, but was a more athletic player (and not as good of a shooter as Macura). I think the right thing to do right now is to continue to express interest in Matura and see how he performs in the Summer before making a decision on an offer.

Yeah looked at some pictures too, definitely looks higher than I though watching it live. Probably due to the quickness.

I think of someone as Kobe or Lebron or Durant having a high release, but yeah, pictures definitely show that with both Blake and Ray.

Macura could be a Hoffarber, but hear me out. Hoffarber wasn't good at making his own shots. He was a spot shooter who did pretty well. Macura could thrive if we had a quick point guard who can penetrate the D and kick it out. Without someone like that, he's not going to be anywhere as good as Hoffarber.

He can work out, get faster and more athletic, and increase his stock.

That's how I see it also. Let's hope he has a really good summer. I have no idea how ambitious he should be, but somebody is going to get a very good spot shooter.

I have not seen JP play but his scouting report is below average. He could be another Hoffarber but at least Blake had other BCS offers. Again the kid may very well be a big ten player but it doesn't seem many other programs agree.

He is only a junior. Could sprout up who knows. Didn't Anthony Davis grow like seven inches between junior and senior year? Let's see how it all plays out.

Well his stock would certainly go up if he was 6'8" rather then 6'4".

Q&A: Gophers Interest in J.P. Macura Intensifies As Critical AAU Season Gets Underway

Gophers Interest in J.P. Macura Intensifies, As Critical AAU Season Gets Underway

Junior shooter J.P. Macura of Lakeville North was named second team College Basketball News’ All-Metro and first team Star Tribune All-Metro after averaging more than 25 points per game in his first season of varsity action.

Macura helped lead the Panthers to the Class AAAA state tournament and has received interest from new head coach Richard Pitio and his staff. Macura has offers from North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Milwaukee, Toledo, Vermont, Northern Colorado, Wyoming, St. Louis, Utah State and New Mexico State and could receive a Minnesota offer. The Gophers talked to him Friday as did Crieghton, which made a home visit.

Coach Pitino is expected to contact Macura over the weekend and they will have a coach next weekend in Dallas as Macura’s AAU tean Minnesota D1, plays in the adidas VIP.

GopherHole.com caught up with Macura Thursday night to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Gopher Hole: What was the reaction when you heard about the Gopher coaching change?

J.P. Macura: I didn’t really know who Pitino was, but from what I am hearing, he is a good coach and there is going to be a different style of play. I am really looking forward to meeting him and building a relationship with the coaching staff. Hopefully, good things happen from there on out.

Gopher Hole: Are you going to try to go down to the campus this weekend?

J.P. Macura: We haven’t really talked about it. We only said that we are going to go down there this week or maybe next week. We still have to talk to them to see which works out the best for us.

Gopher Hole: How many offers are you up to right now?

J.P. Macura: I think 11 or 12.

Gopher Hole: What is the latest ones?

J.P. Macura: The last one I had was Utah State. That was a long time ago. I haven’t got any recent one yet. Hopefully, they will start coming again.

Gopher Hole: What are the expectations for the AAU season? The next two tournaments college coaches will be on the road watching your team.

J.P. Macura: We just have to play together and hopefully play hard. Hopefully, good things come from there. Hopefully, we all get offers from that. The main thing is that we need to play together. We’ve got to run We’ve got to be smart, too.

Gopher Hole: What about your high school team? Lakeville North made it to the state tournament, but you lose some key guards to graduation. What are the expectations for your team next year? Have you thought about that much?

J.P. Macura: Not really, but I think that we are going to have a big team. We are going to have a few good guards, but I think that we are going to have a huge team. We are going to have Conner Flack (a 6-foot-3 sophomore) and a kid named Isaac Brooks (a 6-foot-5 sophomore) and Bronson Bruneau (a 6-foot-5 junior), a tall kid. I think that we are going to have a huge team. We are just going to put in plays that are going to have to work with our abilities of our players, but I think that we will be good. I think that we are going to be a big team. Like I said, we have some guards that are a lower grade, underclassmen that I think will be good for us next year.

Gopher Hole: What things are you really working on to continue to improve yourself as a player?

J.P. Macura: Just ballhandling and getting in the gym and getting up a ton of shots, good shots at game speed. Lifting and getting better at defense.

From the way Macura talks about the Gophers, is it safe to assume that if Minnesota offered it would almost be a given he would commit?

I agree.. seems like we are in the driver seat... I liked this kids attitude since he was younger, "killer instinct " and can get a hot hand. Plays with emotion and passion. I want him.

Nothing against the player or coaches, this kid has similar offers as Mav and Otto. Where are the haters (Tiny, Jamloo)? Didn't they want only 5-star players?

Maybe you have Oto mixed up with Chip. Oto had a Florida and Iowa St offer. People with 20/20 hindsight can whine all they want but Oto was a good grab when they got him.

Sorry, I did. I do like Otto and I hope he can turn this around.

If Oto and Mo turn it around this year, then we will know guys are getting developed. A great sign.

I really hope you are right. Those kids might have had such a bad time playing college ball.

@collegebbnews: Dayton offered Lakeville North guard J.P. Macura today. He helped lead the Panthers to the Class AAAA state tournament & averaged 25 points

Go Gophers!!

Well his stock would certainly go up if he was 6'8" rather then 6'4".

Reminds me of posters talking about Joe Coleman when he was 6'-3"ish in 10th grade, but he could be 6'-8" by the time he got to college.
