All Things JP Macura Thread UPDATED 7/11: GOPHERS offer JP!

Well, he was offered by Brad Stevens, Fred Hoiberg, and Richard Pitino, all of whom seem to really know what they're doing. It seems like Ryan James from GI really likes him, and he knows his stuff. That's enough for me.

In my layman's opinion, though, watching the video, if it weren't for all those offers I'd sure have my doubts and I'd guess I was watching a very good high school player but not a big time college prospect. He has a very skinny frame - I question how much weight he can put on. His lateral movement looks not great. He runs kind of funny, kind of has a "duck foot" (I don't know the technical term, but it's the kind of thing podiatrists correct for in kids).

But, especially if he grows, he could be a really effective 4 yr shooting guard.

Hmmm...sounds like Nate Wolters.

Seems like any player of a certain look people automatically assume he can't play any defense. Be it true or not I doubt if anyone on here has watched him enough to make that assumption. Also I don't get were it is assumed he has this great basketball IQ. From what I can tell the only thing I'm really sure about is he can shoot and score the basketball. Which is a skill set I love.

Agreed. No reason to not offer a guy like JP when you have 5 schollies to give. Why not offer a shooter?

@gophersnow: First 2 #B1G offers for JP Macura this weekend from Purdue and #Gophers. But do teams that offered before like Butler and Iowa St have edge?

Go Gophers!!

Marcus is doing his typical troll of Gopher fans. He knows damn well Butler takes a huge hit from Stevens leaving and that even when Stevens was there JP had real interest in Minnesota, even before he was offered.

Butler seems to be the biggest threat, because reading on a butler site it seems like he has become friends with the players there, but I still see him coming to the u

He tweeted about how he was shocked Stevens left, I think he had just gone on an official there as well. Probably felt a little misled. I don't think Butler is going to be in the mix any more, especially with Purdue also offering now.

LOL at Tubby offering JP.

Why?

Hmmm...sounds like Nate Wolters.

Or even a guy like Matt Janning who had no good offers out of high school because he was "too skinny"... He went on to be a stud in the colonial league (2 All-CAA first team awards) at Northeastern, Sign with the Phoenix Suns (then get cut a month or two later because they needed a big man), win two Italian League titles, and is currently playing in the NBA summer league.

A lot different in the case of JP he has become a national recruit with many good offers.

PiPress: Gophers basketball adds J.P. Macura to Class of 2014 Minnesota targets

"I was pretty excited. I just felt blessed and honored," Macura said this week. "I'm definitely going to take a close look at the school because it's close to home and a Big Ten program. I'm going to spend time with the players after July, get on campus and just see how they do things over there."

But since last week's tournament, Macura picked up offers from Minnesota, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina State, Auburn, Purdue, Texas Tech and Missouri. He also got a call from Texas.

"I'm just going to play the best I can in July and see what other schools offer me," said Macura, who will play Thursday in his D1 Minnesota AAU team's Summer Classic in Bloomington. "If I find a school that I'm 100-percent sure I want to go there, then I'm going to commit. But I'm probably going to take visits in August and try to make my decision in late August or September. I want to make it before the high school basketball season."

"I know (Pitino's) going to turn the Gopher program around after hearing him," Macura said. "We just talked about what was going on and everything. We had a good conversation."

I'd be impressed with Pitino being able to land this kid. I'm already impressed that he's trying.

per Doogie's Scoops:

Shooting guard J.P. Macura, who is in the Lakeville North class of 2014, also played in the Best Buy Classic. He recently got an offer from the Gophers. "They definitely have a chance," Macura said. "I'll spend a lot of time with their players in August. Then I'll decide if I like hanging around them and if it's a good environment. I'll make a decision in September." Macura likes the future of the Gophers under Pitino. "I think he'll turn the program around," Macura said. "He doesn't see me as just a shooter. He sees me playing the game all-around. He thinks I can come in and do good things for the program."

It makes me cringe to hear quotes like Pitino will "turn the program around." Come on, it's not like we've been Penn State, Nebraska, Northwestern or Iowa (which hasn't made the tourney in almost a decade). True, Tubby didn't live up to our hopes and expectations, but we were still basically a NCAA tourney team for most/all of his tenure (the years we didn't make it mostly were due to injuries). Pitino doesn't need to turn anything around, he just needs to build and take us to the next level(s).

So if its more than Gopherhole Tubby haters saying it.... Does it make some of them Tubby Haters still?

4 ncaa appearances this century. Prior to this - academic scandal. Not bottom of big ten but certainly less than mediocre. Tall order for Pitino.

How dare you say this about Nebraska. The vibe I'm getting around here is that Tim Miles will have them winning tournament games any day now.

Agreed on some levels, but think about what perspective these kids have. For example, this kid was just offered by Butler; 2 final game appearances in the last few years, perennial NCAA tourney, etc. Compared to a program like that, this would qualify as turning it around.

New Q&A: J.P. Macura Says He'll Spend A Lot of Time With Gophers Players In August

PiPress: Gophers recruiting: Lakeville North’s J.P. Macura starts unofficial visit tour with Minnesota

First-year Gophers coach Richard Pitino and his staff have met with Macura a couple times but not since they offered him a scholarship last month.

Macura is excited about getting started with his unofficial visit tour. How many schools will he visit? Where will he go next? He said he doesn’t know yet.

Butler already hosted him on an official visit. Macura spoke very highly of Iowa State when I talked to him last month. But Miami (Fla.), Purdue, Texas Tech, Auburn and North Carolina State are among the schools to offer Macura most recently.
