NY Post: Lincoln hoops star to take city’s path to greatness

Whitehead, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard being recruited by St. John’s, Minnesota, Georgetown, Miami, Syracuse, Arizona, Indiana and UCLA, does have what many other city prospects lack: a strong support system led by his mother, Ericka Rambert, who works for the MTA; her brother Warren, a construction worker; his coach, Dwayne “Tiny” Morton, who nurtured the development of Telfair and Stephenson; and AAU coach James Barrett.

Whitehead has become the face of New York City grass-roots basketball, an honor he has welcomed. He likes to talk about bringing New York City back, to “show it’s not dead” and representing it well when he competes in one of the many showcases he takes part in.

Awesome news. Still thinks he picks Syracuse, but getting visits is the next step to get commits. Progress. And once he sees the campus, think he will be even more impressed.

Go Gophers!!

Wonderful news. Just goes to show that Coach P is working it day and night. Regardless of whether we hear any news, he is working it. Looks like we will have some quality players looking at our campus over the next two to three months. I have a feeling we will have at least 2 top players in the fold by November.

Very good news, I was starting to get a little pessimistic regarding Whitehead. We are still the long shot, but getting an official from him would be huge! He should know that if he comes here, he'll get shots immediately. That is probably our biggest selling point.

Also GREAT to see Miami isn't getting a visit. Just have to hope they don't have a duffle bag full of cash on it's way to his house.

Interesting that the list is the same as he one from the blog that Amelia referenced, with Minnesota replacing Memphis. Maybe the hack who wrote the blog got confused. or couldn't read his notes.

Maybe, but I think Whitehead is changing his mind constantly. Miami has been in the mix as well. I won't believe he's visiting here until someone has actually spotted him at the Vu.

But alas VCU comes out of no where and scoops up the 5-star prospect with the accidental meet and greet with Shaka @ the Vu.

Tweet from Jerry Meyer on Isaiah Whitehead

I wouldn't forget bout Minnesota & others as well RT @Vikings_315Hill: if Robert Johnson goes to #iu, is Isaiah Whitehead to cuse look 100%?

To follow up on the previous post. Jerry Meyer just changed his crystal ball prediction to Minnesota. Doesn't mean a lot but I like the optimism.

Hasn't he predicted Minnesota for Whitehead before? Or was that just Newton?

I believe he has but he changed it back to Minnesota tonight. Justin Albers an IU Scout guy tweeted, "2014 G Isaiah Whitehead will visit Indiana, Minnesota and UCLA. Will visit IU first in early Sept. but no date yet. No Cuse visit. #iubb"

so we have a 33.3% chance to land the #2 SG in the 2014 class?

Wow, never would have thought that.

Besides being in the running for Rashad Vaughn. Trying to not get my hopes up, but holy bleep, this is exciting! Win or lose, this is a stretch better than not being in the mix for any 5-star players. Fun stuff!

There isn't anyone on this forum that can even remotely convince me we had a chance like this at a East Coast recruit of this caliber with Tubby time here.

Looks like Whitehead may have eliminated Syracuse.

Not only that, but it sounds like The U and UCLA are neck and neck for the lead with him since he doesn't have a strong relationship with anyone on IU's staff. This is probably the best report we've seen in a month regarding Whitehead. Good find.

Here is the interesting part:

Whitehead will not take an official visit to Syracuse, and the source indicated Whitehead has eliminated the Orange from his list of potential suitors. Guard Kaleb Joseph committed to Syracuse last weekend.

The source told AllHoosiers.com that because the schools Whitehead is still considering are so far from home, he wants to choose one where he already has a good relationship with someone on staff or on the team.

”He knows people at UCLA and Minnesota,” the source said. “He doesn’t really have anybody at IU
, but Indiana is Indiana and they have the tradition. He loves Indiana. He’s letting the process play out right now, but he’s definitely high on Indiana.”

I had started to lose faith in Whitehead coming here after Newton committed elsewhere. Very exciting. Looks like we have a very real shot at landing either Whitehead or Vaughn.

I always felt we had a minimal chance at Whitehead, the ante's has been upped, get a commitment from him and a PG will follow.

Would be cool to get him to visit the same day as Tum Tum and get a commitment from both of them.

That's hard to believe, but wow. We'll see if that holds true ... SU has seemed like the favorite all along.

As for IU and Whitehead, watch the Robert Johnson visit, which I believe is this weekend. If Johnson commits to IU that's gotta help us, but UNC is after him too. (If Blackmon hadn't decommitted from IU you've gotta think Whitehead wouldn't be in play at all for them... they only offered Whitehead after Blackmon decommitted).

I posted this somewhere about a month ago, but when the Whitehead recruitment got some serious steam, I checked out the Syracuse board. Everyone there indicated that while they wanted Whitehead, he always seemed very lukewarm on them. Much the way that Tyus has seemed about the Gophers up until the last couple of days. He never says anything bad about them, always includes them in the mix, but never spoke of the team in particularly enthusiastic terms. I think that Newton liked Syracuse, but they had their eyes on Kaleb Joseph the whole time and when that package fell apart and Newton went to Miami, that probably hurt Syracuse with Whitehead.

How nice would it be if James Blackmon or Ahmed Hill would choose Indiana before Whitehead made his decision?! We still probably have a bit of an outside chance, but all of the 3 schools are certainly in the race for him, and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at any of the 3 reported final schools on his list.
