All Things Gopher Baseball

Iowa has posted their schedule; they will be at Siebert Field March 28-30th
Now 4 open Weekends left and 4 teams to choose from.
Teams Not Posted: Indiana, Oregon, Purdue, Rutgers,
Weekends 3/7-3/9, 3/14-3/16, 3/21-3/23, 4/18-20

Big Ten tourney will be 12 teams, similar to ACC format (four pools of three, max of four games)

The non-conference weekends are tough. High Point was the final weekend opponent to be announced and had a really good year last year. Also, road series within the conference at two of the teams likely to be favored for the league champion (Oregon, Nebraska).

I sometimes wonder why more midweek games aren't played later in season when weather is better (...none in May again this year...)

Finally, I notice the Saints are out of town for the game listed at Saint Thomas; wondering if there is a chance that is played at CHS Field?

With the new rules on JUCO not counting for eligibility, will we see coaches pointing kids down the JUCO path with possible offers after two years? Also, will coaches send kids down to JUCO for development with the idea of picking them back up after they mature?

Luke Ryerse announced on social media today that he's graduating early from East Ridge and immediately enrolling at University of Minnesota and starting baseball & football this spring.

Anyone want to speculate as to what our rotation looks like this spring? Argento? Hemmesch? Whelan? Selvig?

BetRivers has published their betting odds for the upcoming season. Gophers are tied with Spartans and Wildcats for worst odds for conference regular season championship at +5000. Oregon is favorite at +300, followed by Nebraska at +600.

I would have said Kennedy would be likely at the end of last season, but he's gone. Selvig seems like a strong possibility; Remington might be another name to add to that list.

Yep, I’m guessing he’ll get a long look as well though my gut says he’s more of a swing guy. I’m more bullish on Hunter Cook than most but I think he’d be relegated to midweek starts as a freshman. Lots of unknowns.

Our rotation may hold us back this year but I’m cautiously optimistic about life after Anderson.

Selvig, Semb, and Remington were seen as the leaders for the rotation this fall. Rooney, Thorsteinson, and Sundquist were some pieces they are thinking should be big bullpen pieces. Biggest key is that sophomore class finding consistency in their outings. Cook is a guy I've heard they really like his potential but he needs a lot of development, don't think you will see him in too many meaningful situations barring injury.

Forgot about Semb.

Great intel - thanks!

Thanks for the info! Any role anticipated for Argento?

Coach McDevitt was on the Truck Stop podcast (earlier...just recently dropped) and also the Go Gopher podcast.

Highlights:

Coach McDevitt states the weekend rotation to start will be Selvig, Remington, and Thorsteinson. Whelan and Clausen were mentioned as middle relief guys, Rooney and Sundquist as back end. Ryerse mentioned as someone who is behind a month in development but would get opportunities (maybe not right away, though)

Besides the expected returning players, Martin, Elbeery and Richter also mentioned as guys to look for in starting lineup.

McDevitt thought both the tempo of practice/strength training as well as the new safety bags had led to a higher number of injuries, mostly soft-tissue. Among those is Perry, who will be out to start the season (sounded in the range of maybe a couple of weeks)

The Cambia College Classic will be back for 2026 at US Bank Stadium. It sounds as if progress has been made to be closer to a formal, multi-year usage agreement being reached.

Go Gophers!

I can envision Ryerse serving a similar role that Max Meyer did his freshman year, coming out of the bullpen in late innings and then spot-starting in the OF/DH to make use of his bat. Keep in mind Ryerse won't even turn 18 until halfway through the season. That's tough for any 17 year old.

Fun fact: Luke's older brother Grant played on the same travel baseball teams as Max Meyer way back in the day.
