All Things Gopher Baseball

Selvig, Semb, and Remington were seen as the leaders for the rotation this fall. Rooney, Thorsteinson, and Sundquist were some pieces they are thinking should be big bullpen pieces. Biggest key is that sophomore class finding consistency in their outings. Cook is a guy I've heard they really like his potential but he needs a lot of development, don't think you will see him in too many meaningful situations barring injury.
Thanks for the info! Any role anticipated for Argento?

Coach McDevitt was on the Truck Stop podcast (earlier...just recently dropped) and also the Go Gopher podcast.

Highlights:

Coach McDevitt states the weekend rotation to start will be Selvig, Remington, and Thorsteinson. Whelan and Clausen were mentioned as middle relief guys, Rooney and Sundquist as back end. Ryerse mentioned as someone who is behind a month in development but would get opportunities (maybe not right away, though)

Besides the expected returning players, Martin, Elbeery and Richter also mentioned as guys to look for in starting lineup.

McDevitt thought both the tempo of practice/strength training as well as the new safety bags had led to a higher number of injuries, mostly soft-tissue. Among those is Perry, who will be out to start the season (sounded in the range of maybe a couple of weeks)

The Cambia College Classic will be back for 2026 at US Bank Stadium. It sounds as if progress has been made to be closer to a formal, multi-year usage agreement being reached.

Go Gophers!

Ryerse mentioned as someone who is behind a month in development but would get opportunities (maybe not right away, though)

I can envision Ryerse serving a similar role that Max Meyer did his freshman year, coming out of the bullpen in late innings and then spot-starting in the OF/DH to make use of his bat. Keep in mind Ryerse won't even turn 18 until halfway through the season. That's tough for any 17 year old.

Fun fact: Luke's older brother Grant played on the same travel baseball teams as Max Meyer way back in the day.

Big Ten Baseball Tournament Format Changing

This was announced a few months ago but in case you missed it, with the conference expanding from 13 to 17 teams the conference tournament is expanding from 8 to 12 teams.

Format will be: 4 pools of 3 teams playing round-robin from Tuesday through Friday. All pool winners advance to Semi-Finals on Saturday, Championship on Sunday.

All teams will have a minimum of 2 games and a maximum of 4, hopefully saving on pitching. Previous 8 team double-elimination format meant that some teams could play as many as 6 games.
This is similar to the ACC format the past few years. The seeds in each pool will be:
1, 8, 12
2, 7, 11
3, 6, 10
4, 5, 9

The 2025 season is here, with the opener just hours away. Weather looks decent in Houston, with mid-50s tonight (small chance of rain) and Sunday afternoon (sunny, breezy), and forecasted thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon look like will be mostly through by game time tomorrow evening (78 degrees tomorrow...sigh).

Go Gophers!

Sorry, i'm sure i am late to the party on this, but a month ago people were talking about Semb being in rotation. Now i don't even see him on roster. What's up?

Lineup tonight:
1. Josh Fitzgerald, CF
2. Charlie Sutherland, DH
3. Drew Berkland, LF
4. Weber Neels, C
5. Easton Richter, 2B
6. Jake Elbeery, 1B
7. Jameson Martin, 3B
8. Kris Hokenson, RF
9. Jack Spanier, SS
P, Cole Selvig

Gophers with 4 hits and plate 4 runs so far in the first. Love to chase the starter out of there in the first! Thin out the Cougars pitching for the rest of the weekend. Great start boys

Another injury, decided to hang it up instead of rehab and see if he could return later on.

Great start to season. Is Houston supposed to be any good.
They were towards the bottom of Big 12 last year but are usually very good and got a few good recruits so they are expected to be improved

4-2 loss in game 2. Sloppy game for Gophers in field, and not much at plate. Bases loaded in 8th with no outs and 2nd and 3rd with one out in 9th and did not score.

PSA: Both Houston schedule and broadcast stated game 3 start time of 1pm, even though our schedule says finale is a 1:30pm start.

That DP in 8th was an absolute killer. Also wondering what McDevitt was yelling at the ump about. Seemed pretty clear that the run didn't score but he was worked up about something.

Not sure where to put this. So putting it in here.

Indiana State lead 35-1 over Wagner in the 5th inning. Not kidding.

Gophers lose a back and forth finale by a run, 8-7, and drop the series.

Some good and bad things to take away from the weekend. Hitting was pretty solid for the most part but the k's today were tough. Had spots in both losses to plate some runs in the late innings but just couldn't come up with a clutch hit. Overall I'm optimistic about how the season will go. I feel better than the last few opening weekends.

Big Ten Summary through Mondays games. Games over the next 7 days in parentheses.

Michigan State 4-0: Swept Western Michigan & Monmouth. Mediocre competition but credit to them for winning. (Wash State, TxAM Corpus-Christi, UCLA)

Purdue 4-0: Swept Stephen F Austin. (Niagara x 4)

Michigan 4-0: Impressive win over #2 Virginia. Also beat Rice, Villanova and Stetson. (TCU, K-State, Arkansas)

UCLA 3-0: Swept Cal-Poly. (BYU, TxAM Corpus-Christi, Wash State, Mich State)

USC 3-0: Swept George Washington. (UC Irvine, Cal St Bakersfield, Rice x3)

Oregon 3-1: All against Toledo. (Rhode Island x 4....not exactly the toughest competition to start)

Rutgers 2-1: All against Kennesaw State. (Grand Canyon x4)

Penn State 2-1: Impressive win over Mizzou, lost to Stetson, beat UCONN. (Longwood x4)

Maryland 2-1: Wins over UAB and Mercyhurst, loss to Ball State. (Delaware, Western Carolina x3)

Illinois 2-1: All against Abilene Christian. (Texas State x3)

Northwestern 2-1: All against Long Beach State. (Indiana, Fordham x2, Harvard)

Nebraska 2-2: Wins over Vandy and San Diego State; losses to UC Irvine and Grand Canyon. (Louisiana x4)

Washington 2-2: Win vs K-State, loss to Coastal Carolina, split against St Josephs. (Stanford x4)

Minnesota 1-2: All against Houston....all were winnable. (Oklahoma, Virginia, Oregon State....yikes)

Iowa 1-2: All against South Florida...all were winnable as well. (Notre Dame, Stetson, UMBC)

Ohio State 0-3: Swept by Arizona State but they were competitive in every game. (NC State, Coastal Carolina, Alabama)

Indiana 0-4: Lost 2 games to UNLV, also lost to Xavier and Oregon State. Very disappointing start. (Purdue Fort-Wayne, Northwestern, Fordham, Harvard....they better dominate this weekend)

Guessing he didnt think the ump was looking at the dish.

Another tough one run loss, 3-2. Defense was clean with some good outfield play and both a pickoff and also Neels throwing out a stolen base attempt, and pitching was solid overall, but just not enough at the plate...14 strikeouts, zero walks. Their starter was legit, but we only got one run off their bullpen when we needed two.

Weather looks as cold tomorrow, but with chance of freezing rain. Much better for Sunday.

Base running mistake cost us the tying run.

Another low scoring game, another loss, this time a 4-2 loss to second-ranked Virginia. Remington pitched well but got touched for a 2 run homer to give the Cavilers the lead, and then a solo shot for final margin. Got guys on, but not stringing much together at plate.

Tough sleding having a 4 game losing streak with Oregon State tomorrow and then 3 at Arizona State next weekend.
