All Things Class of 2025 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

With the increase of scholarships from 13 to 15, I think high recruits will be important as well as the portal. You can take a chance on a high school recruit who might develop when you have 2 extra scholarships.

That really changes recruiting making high school kids more important. You can't go out and get 8-10 prospects in the portal every year. Every now and then fine but not every year. Ability to take a chance grows a bit also.

Every single person with even a passing interest I'm Gopher basketball knows this disaster is already over, we're just waiting out the death watch.

Even the few still half heartedly defending him.
Him?? What are you talking about? The coach??

This is 2024.

This will be a make or break year for Ben Johnson. The team needs some real success, and the recruiting of high school players has to get better. Free agency for players makes it very difficult for mediocre teams to get better and stay that way, as is indicated by the loss of Gopher starters who transferred for big paydays elsewhere.

It should be easier for Minnesota to get good HS recruits now that the big boys are spending more time at scoring major transfers. But we aren't taking advantage yet....

IMO with the gophers limited NIL funds they can’t afford to overlook/undervalue prep recruiting. Old typically wins so yes getting transfers is needed but if they’re less talented it won’t get us the results we desire.
I'm still in favor of prep recruiting, but the focus should be on guys like the one that signed this summer. Lower ranked players that are hungry and willing to stick around and develop, similar to Kayden Betts. We have a better chance of signing those kids and also are not required to allocate as much resources to securing a commitment.

Huh, this just went into effect prior to this season?

Lol so guys who can barely see the floor on year 3? He’s not a player on a winning team right now.

Yes, those players are going to stick around and ideally develop in the program. It seems like you think Betts is a bust, which is fine. I think he will be a nice player to have in his RS junior and senior seasons. Not sure what being on a winning team has to do with it. Consider the alternative: Bring in highly rated recruit that shows much potential and then gets poached after their freshman year. If the Gophers are going to be a "moneyball" type school, it's going to be hard to obtain and retain players like that.

Ross shows a ranking of 90 on GI but the Gophers are by far his best offer. 6-5 and a string bean at 170 lb. Hope Ben can force feed him on some good MN cooking and wrap him up in a warm Gopher Winter coat.

Any D1 scholarship basketball player who isn't part of the top 8 on their team by their RS Junior year (4th year) is a bust. I predict Betts will not be part of the top 8 for the Gophers next season. Ben will be gone. Good chance Betts will be also. Yes, A bust.

That is such a ridiculous take.....I bet i could name 10 Gophers off the top of my head who would contradict this take....and don't forget that Betts first year with the Gophers should have been his senior year of high school.....

Go for it. He’s not a bust yet but he’s sure not a factor.

Although I’d agree with you that if you ride the pine for 3 years and become a good player as a senior you’re not a bust anymore, but it’s pretty rare.

Not disagreeing with this, but he's got 3 years left, right?

Jeff Hagen, Dusty Rychart, Arron Robinson, Mo Walker.....etc etc.

Ben Johnson?? Recruiting high school players??

Have you guys been living under rocks this off-season?

That's a total waste of time. Because once they develop, they leave for money.
