All Things Class of 2025 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

Ross shows a ranking of 90 on GI but the Gophers are by far his best offer. 6-5 and a string bean at 170 lb. Hope Ben can force feed him on some good MN cooking and wrap him up in a warm Gopher Winter coat.
Ben can give him an acrylic coat or something. But if he develops, other schools will give him a fur coat and a BMW...like what Payne got and was wearing/driving around campus in his last weeks here.

Have you? What is our NIL? Are high school players more or less expensive than transfers?
I have no idea but I am guessing the top rated players from the transfer market and top rated high school guys are similar. After that if I was handing out NIL I would prefer a proven guy from the transfer market rather than a high school recruit.

Given our limited NIL budget HS recruits may be a better way to go since the proven guys in the portal are more desirable by schools and will cost more. Not saying I’d abandon the portal but we need to be smart with what little we have.

The administration needs to get serious about pushing donors for a far bigger fund. They will need to start with showing a desire to win. The reality now is- little NIL = little success.

This feels like a conundrum. We need you to donate to NIL, so we can start winning. We're not donating more until you start winning.

You are right. Johnson needs to win this year or they need to get a coach that makes fans and donors believe they will- based on that coach's past track record. The Tubby hiring gave the program a short term surge, but he fizzled. The last two hires have been guys with no history of winning at this level and then both failed. It's not over for Ben but he has to make people believe this year.

You almost have to do something that goes against the grain and be good at it to succeed with the limited resources Minnesota has, whatever that ends being. Tough job for most coaches I would imagine.

I have my doubts that we will ever draw a proven high major winner who is reasonably close to prime. Much more likely option (if administration is serious)is tapping a proven winner at a lower level still growing in the career. I’m not confident of either. I’m falling to the discouragement of us willingly taking on the paid loser role in the conference.

Yep. I think our administration is just fine with it. They are good with taking the $120 million in TV revenue and running.

Well, putting aside the cost of a player for a moment, the idea of recruiting high school players (other than the most college game ready) is that they may be able to contribute something while developing over time. Two years ago, Ben Johnson recruited 5 high school players. One of them redshirted but the other four played a fair amount as freshmen. All but one of them (the redshirt) was gone after a two year period. What conclusions would you draw from that if you were Ben Johnson?

If high school players are going to leave after a year or two in your program, what is the incentive to recruit bigger freshmen classes and develop them? Might as well construct the bulk of your roster from more mature and experienced transfer short-timers.

I dated a hot chick a while ago and she dumped me.

So I just started dating older divorcées. I built the bulk of my roster from more mature and experienced short-timers.

Didn’t even have 1 championship season.

I am going with the theory that if you recruit good HS players AND you put together a competitive NIL program, you become the incumbent and have the best chance to keep those players. The reason we lost Hawkins and Payne is because we were not prepared with competitive money. While the older players are indeed more experienced, the HS recruits that come to high D1 schools as their first stop are in large part going to be the better players.

Also- the NIL craze has actually opened a new opportunity for schools like our to compete for better HS players because the big boys are fattening up on star transfers and don't have PT for measly 4* kids.

If we just stick to the transfer strategy- we are going to stay right where we are at this year- no fan enthusiasm and predicted to be a bottom tier team and that is despite having Garcia as a starting piece. The portal is a downward slide for us. We will need it (of course) but we are going to have to get really good HS players.

A bit of an update on Beckford. Seems like the 'friend from Ontario' is Frank Mitchell and Seems to be helping in recruiting him 🤞🤞🤞

Honestly, if a kid has to put this out ahead of time, I will say leave us alone. You either commit or you don't, but I have no time for divas.
If this makes him a diva, every recruit this day and age is a diva so we should have no time for any of them, which would make it difficult to put a team on the court

EDIT: BGA beat me to it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most of them do it. It's just the age we are in. I'll take him.

I guess it speaks to an era that makes me care less everyday. The number of season ticket holders that have dropped out would agree with me.

I'm sure you're right, but I don't think the kids care too much about that

Wait, so you posit that the STH holders have declined due to social media?
