Every single person with even a passing interest I'm Gopher basketball knows this disaster is already over, we're just waiting out the death watch.

Even the few still half heartedly defending him.

It just is nowhere near as interesting as it used to be. Now, even when you get them it feels fleeting.
That said, I still think it is very important to succeed in HS recruiting, even though the majority of the building of a team is spring transfers. Ugh

Gophers men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson centered his recruiting efforts in the backcourt recently toward Canada’s No. 1 senior Tristan Beckford.

The bouncy 6-6, 195-pound Beckford has an official visit to Minnesota scheduled for Monday. He has power conference scholarship offers from the Gophers, Iowa, Oregon, Mississippi State, Arizona State and Seton Hall.

An Ontario native, Beckford led the Canadian junior national team in scoring (13 points per game) and rebounding (7.3) at the FIBA U18 AmericaCup in Argentina this summer. He earned all-tournament team honors after leading Canada to the bronze medal.

Beckford, who is ranked as a four-star prospect by 247Sports, transferred from Hillcrest Prep in Arizona to finish his high school career back in his homeland with Fort Erie International Academy in Canada.

Known as a slasher and lockdown defender, Beckford’s elite athleticism was on display with one of the top highlights of the spring when he dunked on five-star forward A.J. Dybansta, the top prospect regardless of class in high school hoops.

The Gophers have a chance to make a big splash with Beckford, but the scheduled official visit this week is in limbo with Cretin-Derham Hall’s 6-10 senior Tommy Ahneman. Ahneman, the No. 1 senior prospect in Minnesota by 247Sports, had a great visit to Notre Dame this past over the weekend.

It would be nice to land some of these guys, but prep recruiting means less than ever in today's college basketball. The chances these players stay at the same school for their entire career is very low. All that matters now is getting guys in the portal and coaching them well enough to win. It looks good to have top ranked players taking visits, but if they don't commit it's a complete waste of their assets. At least relative to the same scenario 3 years ago.

IMO with the gophers limited NIL funds they can’t afford to overlook/undervalue prep recruiting. Old typically wins so yes getting transfers is needed but if they’re less talented it won’t get us the results we desire.
 

Some day if we decided to ever have an actual non-conference to get fans (and recruits) excited it might help a little with landing some of these kids (yes, I know its all about NIL, but still....). If I was a recruit and looking at the teams the Gophers play in the non-con every year it would not excite me to come and play.

I think we need to try and hit on some Dudes: if we get the kid from Canada that would count.

Supplement them with developmental more under the radar projects like Betts and Groves and hop they become contributors in their sophomore/junior season.

The longer you’re in a relationship the harder it is to leave.
