All Things 2024-25 Vikings Regular Season Thread

Schefter saying will get more than a first for McCarthy.
He said previously there are definitely SEVEN teams which need a QB and it could be more.

None of the FO folks he’s spoken to would take Sanders or Ward in front of any of the 6 first round picks QBs from last year.

It’s a sellers market. Hello: Giants, Raiders - that’s 2 suckers right there 🥳

Interesting. With the 2025 Draft considered extremely weak for potential franchise QBs, it certainly gives credence to Schefter's comment.

Add in the fact that last year's Draft produced high upside guys in Daniels, Nix, Williams (Ogee's personal favorite) and Maye along with Pennix Jr's insertion to the starting lineup during a Playoff stretch for ATL.

It only takes one (1) team to "love" your guy to get an overpay in draft picks...and the Raiders sure do look a lot like Huckleberry.

If Shadeur and Ward go in the Top 3 (gross), with the NYG falling in the Draft Order to #4, I could see them bidding on JJM but it would most likely be for a 2026 FRP and some change in the 2025 Draft IMO.

Edit: NYC bogarted my LV and NYG takes

I would absolutely love it if the Raiders gave up their #8 (as it stands right now) overall draft pick (and whatever else?) for JJ McCarthy. Great move by both teams!

If the Vikings could get a top 10 pick for a CB, secure Jones as a backup and take KJ or Hampton as an RB in late 1st I would be very happy.
With the current devaluation of RBs in the NFL, there's a good chance both of those RBs and others could still be there at our 3rd Round Comp Pick (101). It does seem that Hampton's draft stock is surging, though.

Pretty simple, they value the rest more than than enhancing their chance at the #3 seed.

Seahawks aren't playing for anything more than spoiler, so the Rams could win anyway.

Regardless, the Rams are playing at Home. Already have beaten the Vikings and have hung tough with Detroit.

Totally get it.
They will likely be underdogs against Detroit or Minnesota and would be favored by at least a FG against Washington. It's at least as big of a swing as getting a home vs road game. Would he be sitting the starters if a home game was at stake?

Yes, I’ll take you under my wing.

I know it’s hard for metal heads to ask for help. My car also needs a good wax on😉

on the franchise tag - here are the rules:

NON-EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag allows the player to sign an offer sheet with another team. The original team has the right to match the offer or receive two first-round draft picks in compensation if the player leaves. This is the most common type of tag.

EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag completely binds the player to his team. His agent is prohibited from seeking an offer sheet.

Once a player is tagged, the two sides have until July 15 to sign a long-term contract or, by NFL rule, the player will play on the one-year deal (or hold out).

The value of the tag varies from position to position (and the type of tag).

The value of the non-exclusive tag is the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years or 120% of his previous salary (whichever is greater).

QUARTERBACKS: $38,301,000 (non-exclusive)

SO - the Vikes could use the Non-exclusive tag on Darnold, and see if another team is willing to give up 2 first-round draft picks in compensation.

that potentially gives the Vikes 2 first-round picks and added cap space, which they could use to improve the roster around McCarthy. that seems like an awfully attractive option to me - just need a team willing to cough up the two 1st-round picks for Darnold.

I could see McVay doing that anyway. Not a huge home field advantage in LA.

He's got a veteran QB, perhaps on his last run and WRs that have been banged up. Resting them this week makes total sense.

The Rams may get their cake and be able to eat it too, by still beating the Seahawks who have been stumbling down the stretch.

Thanks for this info!

I wonder what recent examples (if any) there are of this for QB's in the league. In other words, the team used a non-exclusive tag on a QB, another team offered that QB, and then willingly gave away two first round picks.

I assume that means first round picks in each of the next two drafts?

Yep, another first rounder is a big deal.

It is a fascinating thought problem. Which QB would another team prefer to trade for.
I have doubts that Darnold will stay this good but I have just as powerful doubts that McCathy will ever be as good as what we have seen from Darnold this year.

My opinion is to "come back" from something, one would have needed to demonstrate prior success.

Just being at best mediocre doesn't seem worthy of Award recognition.

Darnold should set his sights on Offensive PoY, All Pro or MVP anyway.

Heard an interesting discussion on Comeback POY this morning on one of the gambling shows I sometimes catch and a couple of things stood out.

The AP has been actively on this for most of the season it appears, and they regularly communicate with the voters (apparently there are 50 total), and they have said they will NOT throw out ballots that have Sam Darnold's name on it. Part of the discussion though was, your ballot may not get thrown out but do they kick your ass out next year if you vote Darnold?

The language, for anyone that cares:

"The spirit of the award" "demonstrates resilience the face of adversity by overcoming illness, physical injury or other circumstances that led to missed playing time the previous season"

In short, they are really really bent out of shape that Damar Hamlin didn't win last year instead of Flacco. Boo Hoo

Current betting lines as of today, Joe Burrow (who honestly should be the front runner for MVP, based on the numbers he's put up, with a defense that can't stop anyone);

Burrow -175
Darnold +120
JK Dobbins - 16-1

I'd offer Darnold a 2 year deal and let it be known that if he doesn't take it, they will franchise him.

More Joy my Purple Peoples.

Jones wants to finish his career here and I wanna play Hold ‘Em with Aaron😃

Already set career high for carries

Need 29 yards Sunday for career best in rushing yards and 88 scrimmage yards for a career best there as well.

Sunday will be his second season playing 17 games in a season.

I’m up for 2/$10-12M.

Thoughts?

There's also the Transition Tag option which is the same as non-exclusive except the team doesn't get the first round picks. This option is about $4M cheaper at $34.367M.

Aaron is making $7M this year so 2/$10M seems quite reasonable even for a RB his age.

Everyone likes him and he seems to understand he’s nearing the end and two years is the most he could reasonably expect; give him a decent guaranteed and then he knows he’s set.

Maybe Kwesi can help the Wolves out of their possible future mess.

Agreed, would love to have him back; but with his age and miles on the tires, and the periodic fumbling issues, you need to have a really good #2. Not sure if that's Akers again or if Chandler can keep improving or if they need to go draft or FA, but Jones is no bell-cow back anymore

All signs point to the Falcons releasing Kirk Cousins after this season. This will save the Falcons $25 million.

If Cousins is released before June 1, Falcons will incur a dead cap hit of $65 million for the 2025 season.

If he is released post June 1, Falcons will pay him an extra 10 million but can spread the dead cap hit over two seasons. $40 million in 2025 and $25 million in 2026.

Awful for the Falcons.

it would be a huge mistake to keep him long term when you drafted a rookie in a QB class that looks like it could be one of the best in a very long time.

Maybe we got the dud of the class, who knows.

All signs point to us having Darnold long term.

Hello NY Jets 😃

Rich Eisen's top 10 just dropped:
1. Minnesota
2. KC
3. Buffalo
4. Philly
5. Detroit

Said Vikings have most complete team if you look at both offense and defense.
Some X% of it this time of year is luck with injuries.

I dare say the football gods are finally smiling on us this year. Knock on wood
