Witchita State shocks Memphis. This will help the Gophers Net Ranking for the Fox Tournament No One Asked For.
Our motto being "We'll take what we can get." really resonates with this

your post said it was packed. something the barn hasn't done this year. maybe last year vs msu or rutgers?
Yes, it was packed but I wasn’t comparing it to Williams Arena. 3K in St. Peter vs 15K at the U are different beasts.

That said, I really enjoy good MIAC basketball although it has been a few years since I caught one in person.

Iowa is officially in freefall mode, it would appear. Maryland is pulling away 86-62 with less than 8 left

Fran's swan song at Iowa nearly complete. Won't love to compete for a coach with them this offseason but will be happy to not see that cherry tomato on the opposing bench anymore.

They were very good in the second half while beating Rutgers on the road in their last game but this game on the road was the exact opposite. Of course, Rutgers is no Maryland.

only a game lead though. washington plays rutgers this week as they can become 5-10 and minnesota going to ucla will probably become 5-10

True. Beating UCLA in LA could be even more shocking than beating Michigan at home. The circumstances are a bit different. When we beat Michigan, we were 0-6 in conference so that first win really meant a lot. Now we've seen the team win 5 conference games so we're a little more accustomed to being able to win games. Still, Michigan is the only upper tier conference team we've beaten and most of the games against that group have been lopsided losses.

The UCLA game gives us another chance to get a second victory against the elite conference teams. I'm not expecting a victory but there are some things that may give us a bit better chance than against some other teams in that group. For example, UCLA is one of the worst rebounding teams in conference games. If we can win the rebounding battle and minimize turnovers, we might be able to get extra shots, something that is very helpful for teams who aren't great shooters. I also don't think that the Gophers have played any worse on the road in conference than they have at home.

I saw a replay of Saturday game and was surprised how well we dominated the boards against SC. That has been so rare in the recent past that it nearly elicits shock. But bringing in Frank Mitchell was supposed to help in that category and finally has.

Tangential to this is an example that the box score doesn’t reveal everything. I saw that Frank got a T and I was torqued off thinking he messed up like the Washington game. Then I saw on replay that it was simply dunking the ball after the whistle. Pretty soft T and not nearly the same as mouthing off the ref in a close game.

I know. I thought to myself, "since when do you get a T for taking a practice shot during stoppage of play?"

Rebounding is essential for this team because they usually don't shoot well enough to overcome having fewer shots. Michigan is the only conference game that we've won while being out-rebounded and that can be mostly explained by Michigan having 13 turnovers to our 5 and us having 9 steals to their 2.

If you count each free throw attempt as half a shot, we had 67 shots to USC's 57 shots. That was enough to compensate for their big advantage in 3-point shooting (9 of 15 compared to our 5 of 18).

So tired of seeing Badger hoops be so good for so long, and us being so bad for so long.
At least in Football we've closed the gap and caught up with them. Basketball........not so much.

there's actually no reason minnesota isn't at least a consistent tournament team. look at how illinois went from being bottom feeder of the conference in 2010s to relevant as well

With respect to this weekend, I'm not sure what was more surprising:

The Badgers putting up 90+ including at Purdue in both of their 2 wins or the Gophers winning twice in LA. That would have been a heck of a parlay.

They are far removed from Bennett Ball, having already had some impressive scoring nights, but still going back-to-back over 90 is something I wouldn't have imagined. Pretty opposite of their current football team's offensive efficiency.

Crowl is doing okay but Winter may be the next Wahl for them. The other three freshman…two aren’t playing and Jannike kid is a rotational piece. Going forward is there anyone you want besides Winter?
wahl couldn't shoot. winter and Crowl both can

Being in the rotation of a senior-laden fringe top ten team as a redshirt PWO freshman is actually pretty impressive. Janicki could end up being a pretty good piece for them moving forward as their seniors depart. Wisconsin really has a way of fitting their pieces together so that every player is contributing even if they're not a star individually.

Penn State handled Penn State 89-72 in front of 12 people in Happy Valley.
Can't take them lightly Saturday.

Oregon holds on to win in Iowa City. Oregon has the look of a talented team that doesn’t work very hard. The big freshman Bittle had a really nice game on both ends. They don’t win without him.

Northwestern is leading at Ohio State 46-26 with less than 13:00 left in the 2nd half
Northwestern ends up winning by 21 at Ohio State. Hope they haven’t turned the corner. I already penciled in a W for when they play here.
