All Things 2024-25 College Basketball Other Games Thread

Akron came back from down 12 at halftime to win 85-78 over Toledo to move to 11-5 (4-0 MAC). Zips have been a consistent winner in that conference

McNeese has won 7 straight now after winning 75-59 last night. 6-0 in their conference
To quote five finger death punch.
This is the way the way Mr Coyle, this is the way the way Mr Coyle.
WILLLLLL WADEEE IS The WAYYYYY MR COYLEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Illinois played without lottery pick Jakucionis. They still didn’t play well, but he is such a big part of the team.

He returned last night and they win by 25 at Indiana.
I know you're the resident Illini guy - that's a great team when everyone's available. But I want to bash the Hoosiers here.

Ok, so they're missing Reneau - that still leaves them with a monster in the middle (Ballo) who they ought to be able to exploit in the paint against just about everybody. Ah, but you have Mike Woodson calling the shots - Ben Johnson might be is a better coach than him.

Looking at the stats, Indiana took 31 of their 47 twos from midrange (only 18 3FGAs, too). That is unfathomable in the age of analytics - I mean, everybody knows this is a losing strategy, right? Even Ballo took 5 of his 11 shots from midrange. WTF, Woodson? My head would explode if I were a Hoosier fan.

Indiana is one of the clearest examples of how having tons of NIL only gets you so far if you have terrible coaching.

Watching Kansas at Iowa State is depressing.
Sure talented teams, in such a great atmosphere.
Such a 180 from Gopher basketball.

It doesn't have to be.

Oklahoma is in the processing of going from 13-0 ranked #13 to missing the NCAA tournament in about a 2 week span. About to fall to 0-4 in the SEC. Every team I root for is cursed.

Craig Smith has Utah on the move. Making a big push to get back on the Gopher's short list.

For an away game but close enough to attend it was really cool. LOUD like the PHOG. Those Cyclone fans appreciate their team that's for sure!!!

DaJuan Harris shot FT's like most of the Gopher. I was excited when Dickinson transferred to KU. Now, not so much. And of course where would a fan be if one didn't call out the officiating. LOL KU is just not together on the defensive end and their offense isn't all that great right now either.

The Vols, ISU, Auburn, Bama, Kentucky all look really good. The SEC is murderers row for sure!!!!

Wondering if anyone knows what Iowa State's NIL is? Haven't heard of any BIG donors there but might be wrong. If they are doing what they are doing without a lot of NIL money, I'll feel even worse about our current state.

I’d rather have the Utah State coach.

Looks like a pretty good candidate. He's in his 8th year as a D1 head coach. He's had only 2 losing seasons: his first two with Youngstown State. The one thing that gives me pause: he's in his first season with Utah State. That probably means he has a buyout and, if past history is any indication, the Gophers' AD likely wouldn't be willing to pay for it.

Completely coincidental - I actually attended the Utah State @ UNLV game last night. Under the banners (1990 Natty), and in the aura of Tark. Utah State was ranked 22. Calhoun looks like a good coach, in control. Felt like the Aggies were the better team - but 5 things: 1. Rebs out-rebounded USU. Sound familiar? 2. I think I must have some awful voodoo on CBB players when I attend as USU shot 53% from the line, and both teams combined for 57% (I was at that Gopher-Ohio State stinker, too!!), and ingloriously. 3. Really enjoyable game, attended sparsely, but fans were into it. 4. My section won a free In N Out Burger Double Double!! 5. I especially enjoyed it, because I may or may not have bet on the underdog Running Rebs on the money line. 😎

It was so fun to enjoy watching a closely and hard fought game. I couldn’t help thinking about what could be for us.

Utah State had Craig Smith in 2021, Ryan Odom (now at VCU) for two seasons, and Danny Sprinkle (now Washington) last year. I don’t think the current coach would have agreed to a big buyout with that kind of stepping stone history.

Assuming someone (not necessarily Minnesota) hires Calhoun away in the next year or two, it'd be interesting to do a new Comparable 4 following the careers of "Guys who used Utah State as a launching pad".

Per Sickos-
UPDATE: Cal Poly, who is trying to avoid infamy as having the most conferences loses in a row in men's college basketball history (they have 44, I believe the record is 45), is down 31-26 at home to UC Davis. It is on ESPN+ if you are so inclined

I tuned in to see the record tied.

So far ranked teams are 0-2 tonight and Gonzaga is losing at half time to the Oregon State Tinkles.

All three ranked teams went down last night. All on the road too.

In other news.....Iowa is down 24 to 57 at half against UCLA.

Now down 33. At least when they're done they get to go back to Iowa. Oh.

Gophers next opponent (Iowa) had what could be a significant injury. Payton Sandfort left the game in first half and never returned.

Iowa has a lot of guys that can score, but if he misses Gopher game we catch a break. Hawkeyes are a little soft. Hopefully Gophers physicality (like vs. Michigan) is effective vs. Hawkeyes.

Iowa fans seem to think Fran is either having health issues or is on his way out. Either way seems disengaged.
