All Things 2023 Minnesota Vikings Off-Season Thread

Oh I see, you changed it to “caliber”.

Hard no on taking WR in first two rounds.

Defense, defense, defense.
Would you go corner?

The reason I ask is because we just signed a starter that should be good. Do you need two good corners?

CBs are very risky to draft in Round 1. It's a difficult position to evaluate, and the position is extremely scheme dependent. A lot of 1st Round CBs don't work out.

With so many people who see the field and so many different positions, it's truly best to draft the best player available.

At the very least, draft the best player available from the 3, 4, or 5 units that are deficient on a team.

How would you guys rank the order of need for the Vikes in this draft?

QB, IOL, WR, DE, DT, LB and CB.

I didn't realize this until now that there are only 31 picks in the 1st round this year due to Miami losing theirs for multiple infractions.

1. DT
2. DE
3. CB
4. WR
5. IOL

Draft the best player available in Round 1 among those 5 positions if a 1st Round pick is made.

6. QB
7. LB
I can't argue with that ranking at all nor the idea of grabbing the best player at 23.

If Bijan Robinson happens to fall, I'd be very tempted to move Dalviñ for whatever and grab him. I think PHI will grab him at 9 and you can get good RB's later on but he's special. He didn't drop a single pass in college and they used him on longer routes.

Yep, I think that list is correct except I would put WR at #2 (depending upon if we move Z. Smith and/or Danielle Hunter).

But everyone is also right, with the first round we should draft the best player available regardless of position.

I also agree on Robinson, he's so good, if he's available, you grab him and don't blink.

Whatever is most needed on defense.

Has to be defense.

We won 13 games with basically this offense, with the offense doing most of the work.

Defense has to be the focus.

Every single starter on the OL was drafted by the Vikings in the last few years. With obviously Ingram last year.

I just see no chance in hell that hey draft OL in early rounds. Don’t care if it’s the “best” available.

This is probably true. We won't draft an OT in the first round and I don't think a C would be the best available. I would actually like a trade back and draft of JMS though. We need a new C.

But you're right, I don't see us drafting a tackle and I don't think any guard would be BPA at #23.

What is your order?
Straight defense, homie :D Probably DL, but won’t be mad

(Perfectly fine with WR, OL, etc in Round 4 or later)

The “interesting” one to me is someone like Hooker. Maybe. No idea what the “correct” answer is, if I did I’d make the big bucks.

One wild card scenario that COULD possibly happen (albeit unlikely)...

There appears to be way more teams wanting to trade down than want to trade up. If the Vikings really had a target on a player that slipped into the mid-teens, I wonder if they manage to move up for what most years would be a bargain price?

The thing with moving up for the Vikings, they just don't have many picks to begin with.

I think the top 5 sees almost no movement at all, which will probably surprise many. People aren't going to cough up major capital to move up as some people think.

I'd hate if they drafted Hooker. The guy is 25 years old.

I would be cool with interior DL and maybe the right S (Branch) but a DE/OLB doesn't make sense to me. We have 4 guys who are at least decent.

At WR, we have Jefferson and. . . crickets. . . I guess Osborne and then absolutely nothing.

on my Twitter feed, I keep seeing different people saying the Vikings could trade up to go after a QB.

may be complete BS, but it's out there. assuming this is not just coming from some guy living in his mom's basement, it could be something to watch.

I think they will draft a QB. the question is when.

beyond that.....CB, LB, WR, DT. depends on how many picks they wind up with.

The people who are representing the QBs in the top half of the draft (sans Bryce Young) are in full blown panic mode right now. They are pushing this narrative as absolutely hard and heavy as they can to drum up interest in their guys; the "worldwide leader" is also good for doing this kind of propaganda. The worldwide leader also has a documented history of pumping up the black QB prospects as well so that's one thing to remember with all the misinformation floating around.

I don't see the Vikings taking a QB at #23 even if they had their choice of Levis or Richardson. I just don't see it.

Irsay is a wild card with the Colts, a full blown nut job that likes to have his hands in the cooking. If they were smart they would sign Lamar Jackson and draft the best OL available but time is running out on that; although they could still sign Lamar after the draft easy enough.

KJ will be Chris Cris Carter to JJ Moss.

Mark it, dude.

STrib: Vikings mailbag: Cost for trading up to No. 3 overall? Pressing draft needs? Edge plan?

Q: Percentage chance the Vikings trade up to pick No. 2 or No. 3 for a quarterback? — @miller70chev

AK:
That would likely require a large package of picks and players considering the 20-spot jump from No. 23, their current draft slot, and the precedent set for trades into the top three. The San Francisco 49ers made the last move, sending two first-round picks and a third-round pick to Miami for a nine-spot jump – No. 12 to No. 3 – in 2021. The last team before that to jump from outside the top 10 into the top three came in 2016, when the Rams moved from No. 15 to No. 1 for a first-round pick, two second-round picks and two third-round picks. You'd assume the Cardinals' demands for No. 3 this year would start with a couple first-round picks in addition to No. 23 from Minnesota. For a Vikings roster that needs to be restocked, I'd estimate the chance as low. Should one of the top quarterbacks, like Florida's Anthony Richardson or Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, start to fall, things could get interesting for the Vikings.

Q: What do you think is their trade up limit? — @battl2heaven

AK:
Let's keep in mind they only have five draft picks and fall at a spot in the draft – No. 23 – where talent could start to tail off at coveted positions. Trading back wouldn't be a shock if quarterbacks go very quickly. But Ben Goessling mocked the Vikings trading up to No. 11 to snag Richardson, sending a 2024 first-round pick to the Titans. That seems a reasonable cost for a supposedly high-ceiling franchise leader. Whether he lasts that long remains to be seen. Prominent sportsbooks have Richardson as a heavy favorite to go in the top 10, offering odds as low as -700. A trade into the top 10 likely needs a little heavier trade package. In 2017, the Chiefs moved up from No. 27 to No. 10 for future first- and third-round picks. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah downplayed his adherence to a trade chart, or a set valuation on what each draft slot is worth: "I try and view it as a scenario thing," Adofo-Mensah said last year. "Here are the different scenarios we could be in if we pick this player or not, and just compare them and see how we are. There are mathematical ways to do it, but there are also common sense and intuition ways of doing it as well."

Q: Seems like there's a lot of steam around the quarterbacks this year. What other than quarterback could the Vikings draft early? — Evan

AK:
If there's a quick run on this year's passers, and the Vikings' top tier is exhausted, the depth chart could certainly use another cornerback, receiver, interior defensive lineman and interior linebacker. Adofo-Mensah said earlier this month that they obviously need to add cornerbacks. Minnesota has added just Byron Murphy Jr. and Joejuan Williams in free agency after everyone who played last year exited in free agency except for Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans. Perhaps they'll take another swing at interior offensive line with left guard Ezra Cleveland in a contract year and center Garrett Bradbury's new contract coming with just 2023 guaranteed.

Q: Will Za'Darius Smith be on the team this year? — Lew

AK:
As of Wednesday, the Vikings are still holding onto Smith and running back Dalvin Cook. But that could change quickly as the team is open to moving them amid financial constraints and logjams at their positions. Smith posted goodbye to Minnesota on social media, but the Vikings are making him wait, for now, after guaranteeing $10 million for one season of Marcus Davenport — who plays Smith's position. "He was a great member of our team last year and we'll keep the conversation ongoing," Adofo-Mensah said of Smith this month. Edge rusher Danielle Hunter also reportedly wasn't planning on showing up to voluntary work, which he also skipped in 2021 before an eventual restructure, as he's due just $5.5 million this season.

Skol Vikes!!

you have to hand it to the NFL.

here we are on the sports calendar: NBA and NHL playoffs are underway. MLB regular season is underway. College Football Spring games being played. Transfer portal action for football and hoops.

and despite all that, a significant % of the sports world is fixated on the NFL draft. because the draft offers hope to even the worst teams in the league. it's like kids on December 23rd - quivering with anticipation while they wait to open their presents. of course, some kids wind up with a new bike, while other kids wind up with socks and underwear............

1. DT
2. DE

Yes, thank you. I have thought all along that defensive line is an underrated need.

TBH, after last yrs draft I don't trust Kwesi. That draft is bordering on disaster. I hope Kwesi just sticks and picks.

I'm down to four (4) guys on my wish list for #23 knowing full well that none may be there:

CB Joey Porter,Jr.
DE Luka Van Ness
RB Bijan Robinson
DT Calijah Kancey

Seems like there will be some highly rated cornerbacks at 23 but we have such a bad history drafting at that position that I kinda hope we go a different direction. Would really like a dlineman but not in love with anyone who will likely be available at that spot.

That said, Zay Flowers is first on my wish list. Hopefully he makes it to our pick.

Porter is going to be a player somewhere.

Was fun watching some "behind the scenes" footage of him prepping for and doing the Combine. Obviously his dad was a great NFL player, and is a hugely important in his life.

Not sure if it makes sense for us to take a corner in round 1. Too many other areas of need. But on the other hand, it is a critical position.

Whatever Flores wants, is good for me.

PA just said if the Vikings stay at 23, and he's still there, he thinks it the running back out of Texas.

Kill me!

Seeing reports that vikes are trying hard to move up to #3 for Anthony Richardson.

Will be interesting if Stroud drops after that S2 score.
