All Things 2023 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

If Correa and Buxton can hit anywhere near what they are capable then there’s hope. Corea has gotten a bit better but Buxton is completely lost at the plate right now

We have to have the worst dh, worst third base, and the worst outfield in the league.

Our other positions have to be bottom half of the league as well.

Imagine where we'd be if had last year's pitching.

He's become Miguel Sano. He needs to stop trying to hit 500 foot hrs to left field. He also doesn't seem to be seeing the ball well. Tons of called strikes down the middle and swings and misses. Since July 4th he's 1/28 with one walk and 13 strikeouts. An IL /rehab stint is in order.

People keep saying that and its underrating Sano(until he totally flamed out). Buxton has a OPS+ of 93 right now.

Sano had a 83 OPS+ in his disatrous 2018 of 266 ABs. Evry other year when he got Buxtons ABS or more were...

149, 108, 126, 139, 105, 112. Im glad Buxton is starting to stop getting a pass. You wanna be a DH only?? YOu better fucking hit and hes not doing it.

I think what pisses me off most is looking at how hes treated vs Gallo. Now im not calling for Gallo to bat 3rd/4th but sersiously..

Gallo routinely bats 9th behind fucking Vazquez and Taylor who are literally our worst hitter and a guy who was brought here to play defense(slugged better than expected). Buxton bats 3/4 every game.

Buxton this year is an exact replica of Gallo. Just waaaaaaay worse. Walks way less. Hits homers less frequently.

Have got to hold guys accountable. Stop giving special treatment. We are in WIN NOW MODE.

I was just considering offense.
Here you go then.

Twins ranks by position in OPS:
DH - 9th (Twins at .783, Seattle worst at .594)
3B - 21st (.686, Oakland at .548)
LF - 27th (.661, Washington at .628)
CF - 28th (.629, KC at .549)
RF - 21st (.721, Milwaukee at .559)

You're probably not too far off with the OF but they do make up a little bit of it with their defense.

Buxton has a .706 OPS so if you just compare him to other team's DH numbers he'd rank 20th.

I know this isn't the point of your post and agree about Buxton, but I kinda like Gallo in the 9 spot. He walks a lot but at the same time will rarely be in situations where he needs to put the ball in play to move a runner over or something.

100%. And thats why I tried to add the caveat that I am not clamoring for Gallo mistreatment haha.

I think I saw a stat where he has like 3 career sac flys. So having Gallo on with a lot of guys on isnt really the goal

But thats again the thing....Buxton with RISP........hideous(although he has gotten some sacs)

Its just ironic that we have the exact same player batting in way different spots

And admittingly, we dont have a lot of middle of the order options so long as we continue to not play AK and Julien everyday. Someone does have to bat 3rd/4th.

And Buxton's clearly not right physically for sure so why not give him some time off. It's weird because when he was playing well the past few years they'd still give him full days off. Now he's horrible and they just keep playing him day after day. I don't think completely benching him is the answer but maybe sit him half the games for a week or two. Let Julien hit DH.

FWIW - until proven wrong, I will continue to believe that Falvey is calling the shots in this organization. Rocco certainly has some authority/responsibility - but I think a lot of decisions are made by the front office, including who is on the 26-man roster and who is on the 40-man roster.

Rocco may write out the lineup card, but the front office - I believe - has a lot of say in the matter.
Doogie did an interview with Falvey and Falvey said he likes Kepler. People like Reusse have also said that a lot of the pitching decisions are strongly influenced by the front office.

So people can yell at Rocco all they want - but if Rocco was fired tomorrow, the new manager would still be answering to Falvey.

Exactly. And while this is certainly a flawed team offensively its also oddly one that isnt hurting for options.

Like we have guys who can get a shot everyday. Namely Julien. But even Wallner and Chris Williams(not on the 40 man) are mashing in AAA.

We have short term gap fillers that could be long term options. Its just an odd way to handle Buxton.

Heck, I think even sitting him for a few games might help. I know we just had the all star break but thats a "planned reset". Maybe something where hes sat down for a mental reset for a couple games due to performance will help something click in him.

That or as you said, IL him for a couple weeks see it if helps a bit. THen contribute for stretch run.

Lineup is out.

Julien and Ak in the top 4 where they belong. Still no Wallner though. Hes truly up here to sit on the bench

Yes, that’s why it made no sense to bring him up. If they are going to continue to give at bats to Gallo and Kepler he should have stayed at St Paul. Glad to see Buxton is in the 3 spot again.

Gallo deserves ABs imo. But Kepler its just funny.

Also, I am continually baffled. Why we didnt just make room for Williams on the 40 man and get a righty up here then?

Like what are we going to do with Nick Gordon? Just DFA him now. How the hell is he going to have a roster spot? He sucks for one and theres no room.

Polanco is back soon which means bye bye Wallner. Royce will be back soon which is already going to put Julien spot in jepardy which shouldnt happen.

Who is Gordon going to replace? Hint......no one. He stinks and Castro literally does his role but better. More versatile, better defense and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better base runner. Like infinitely better.

This is what I was trying to say the other day. I wish they'd give Wallner a shot but it's probably not going to happen with Kepler still on the team.

It’s funny the one thing this team needs is a right handed hitting player. The number of right handed hitting players the twins failed to sign in the off season over signing Joey Gallo is absolute roster malpractice.

Yeah sadly its true.

Usually when guys get called up its not to just sit. Like we havent done that much in the past it feels.

The Kepler thing at this point is clearly pride. They held on to him and now wont let go. Hes slugging .362 since his IL return even with the couple big hits. I mentioned yesterday, the career numbers vs lefties of Kepler compared to Gallo is hilariously lopsided. We still started Max.

Is what it is it appears.

I got news for you if Polanco comes back there is a chance Julian gets sent back down. With Buxton being the all time DH and Polanco back there is no room for Julian on the roster.

When Polanco comes back unlikely its Julien but could be. Itll be absolutely disgusting if it happens but with how little Wallner gets to play I think they will just swap him back out.

Either way with this front office I am fully prepared for this to happen leading up to deadline.

*Julien best hitter optioned to AAA*

*Twins stand pat at deadline and dont add a bat*

Falvey explanation: "We like our current team and didnt find a need to add a bat. We cant even get Julien at bats in this lineup so we love the one we currently have."

Tell me thats at all a reach. This org is so messed up we will try to justify not playing Julien as our lineup being too crowded to add help.

Calling up Wallner without a spot to play was a mistake.

They could have put Williams on the 40 by moving Alcala to the 60-day IL.

Wallner is replacing Miranda not Polanco. I agree this team needs Julian’s bad way more then Wallner if they continue to employ Gallo and Kelper.

Correct. But he replaced the infielder.

Miranda will not be back on this team this year.

Yes, that would have made more sense. Also having Vazquez signed for two more years is not looking great. The twins could also send Cole Sands back as he is terrible and never pitches.

Well, no runs in the first off GIlbert but 4 batters made him throw 26 pitches. Keep that up. Get him tired and out of the game.

Seriously though, do Julien and AK every not have professional ABs? Even if they get out. They work counts, try to go the other way on outside pitches. Its beautiful.

Buxton sure as hell doesn't. Gawd, what a schit at bat that just was.

Please get Buxton out of the 3 hole. He should be batting 7 or 8 at this point (or not at all)

Buxton down to .198. He cannot simply just be plugged into the 3 hole day after day at this rate. It's pure lunacy.

Julien and AK seriously. Every AB is impressive by these guys.

AK might have been fucked by ump. Still worked an 8 pitch AB and had a well hit sac fly.
