All Things 2021 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

EDIT: Maybe it's just me, but I don't see an announcement here.
I see what you are saying about this not being an announcement. Also, a complete homer like myself could read the #BeDifferent as going to a total rebuild in Minnesota.

Yeah, that's pretty disappointing. He was our last shot to get any sort of size and rim protection.

Not completely true. He likely was our last chance to get a big man who appeared to be of high quality. There are other players with size out there but most of them appear to be mediocre.

In his latest Scoops Podcast, Doogie says Minnesota is "exploring all options world wide for this years roster. All positions. Yes, Eric Curry should help with about 15-20 minutes a night but they are still open-minded in adding across the board. Talent is talent."

Go Gophers!!

I believe this is what we all worried about. We saw Curry last year, it was not pretty for the most part. There is always a chance for improvement, but he literally had hung it up already.

It's mid-July. And we're scouring the entire planet for all positions? Yikes.

“Talent is talent”?? Favorable media market I guess.

Regardless how awful they might be this season ..... it's still a BIG TEN team and with outstanding facilities.

Shouldn't that automatically mean they can pull guys from the transfer portal??? Are there guys in the portal who are really saying "yeah ... not interested in contributing serious minutes on a Big Ten team, sorry".

Porndog mentioned Harold Yu, a 7'3" center prospect, in post 1055. Here's one of several available videos for Yu:

With Ihnen's season-ending injury, I wouldn't mind if the Gophers took a flyer on Harold Yu. 247 has him listed as 27th best center in the 2021 class. For context, Holmgren is 1; Thompson is 21; Pohto is 23. Yu is the top rated uncomitted center from that class.

He has the vertical leaping ability of Randy Brewer!

Childs would be a nice 1 year addition for sure, he had some moments last year. MWP3 why not get some name recognition! I mean most of these guys didnt do a ton at their smaller schools but at some point just going to need bodies.

That point has arrived.

Randy Breuer two time first team all Big Ten center had game . Gophers have no options. While this covid free agency helped many teams it put Minnesota in position to field one of the worst products talent wise this program has ever seen. Ben Johnson might wish he had waited for a head coaching opportunity but he does have a great payday.

I can fill you in on some of them just based on what I've read and their stats.

First of all, one we surely can't get: Cockburn. Ones we probably can't get: Colin Smith, Childs of Bradley. Muhammed of Central Michigan looked like he had potential but I think he has committed. There's a Ukrainian center transfer from Washington State who is serviceable but I don't see him on this list. There is also a freshman transfer center (soph to be) from San Jose State who isn't listed (although he did play like a relatively low rated center in his first year). Mayan Kiir seems fair. Ngandu of Seton Hall didn't play last year (his freshman year) and I believe he is having trouble getting cleared to come to the US. The majority of the rest of them have done little or nothing in their careers. A couple of them have transferred to so many schools that I don't know if Johnson would take them.

I'm guessing when you look at the talent that was in the transfer portal relative to who we signed. We are not better than last year at the moment.

Edit: It did help us eliminate last year's roster completely.

My point is- the transfer portal is a change in the rules of the game. The winners of games use the new rules to their advantage. We neither succeeded in selling the new hope and teaching acumen of the new staff, nor did we convince our own guys to stay. Others have used this example, but Iowa State seems to be a comparable situation where they are getting some traction and we are not.
Why?

Ben's current networking skills only extend to hiring assistants apparently. The top players brought in (battle, fox) are local and committed so they could come home. His biggest recruiting wins have been Fox and Ihnen, who are now both out for the year. Apparently he wasn't working on any hot leads at Xavier when he took this job. Maybe his plan all along has been to target high school guys with game/character he values. One or the other needs to pan out though or we are in trouble.

Perhaps because Otzelberger has been a head coach before.

Would a Randy Breuer or Minute Bol be drafted in today's NBA? Would they be highly sought at the Major D1 level today? With the advent of the 3 point shot and analytics I wonder how they would have fared.

Early reports were 0 was being accomplished by the new staff - I mentioned it and now we see the results.

So that somehow diminishes Breuers career and the Big Ten championship he helped us win. If you take it one step further how many players in the 70s were even athletic enough to play today. Very few. Manute Bol actually could shot the three. I get your point however.

No, it doesn't diminish it at all. My point is that recruiting a guy who is compared to Randy Breuer today is not the ringing endorsement that it would have been in 1982.
