All Things 2021 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

I don’t remember seeing that Johnson wouldn’t count against the scholarship limit, why is that? Is that a covid 5th year thing?
Right, wouldn't that mean Willis doesn't count either? He is also using an extra covid year.

Sam's got a 12 minute limit based upon the 5 fouls per game rule...😗
Yes I have seen Sam at the Gopher team camp and an open gym with other college and pro players last summer and I have never seen anything from him that says he belongs in the Big Ten. During his limit time he seems uncoordinated

Minnesota Gophers no doubt are likely desperate for frontcourt help to balance the guard and small forward roster assembled by Ben Johnson, especially matching in the physical & frontcourt size against several Big Ten teams, one problem . the transfer portal for centers with adequate experience or somewhat proven ability is close to empty. .Even remaining H.S. recruits have been nearly depleted at the center position. I think Johnson should forward his best effort to convince Freeman or Pohto , even both, to reconsider playing huge minutes for the Gophers...One remaining High School BB Center who is lightly recruited {only California-U} is China exchange student 7-3 300lb Harold Yu, lacks experience, but shows potential as a decent shot blocker-rebounder-passer, not to mention with his imposing size there is no free ride to the rim. Harold Yu has very little offense ability, but worth the risk for some college team...Not stating someone like Yu could be the answer for frontcourt help, but at this point, Freeman, Pohoto or even Yu would be better than a empty middle, especially in the Big Ten....

That's my thing. We can find someone like that that may fit Ben's culture that can do the same things he could. I actually think with Fox here, we will need/want a floor spacing big that maybe will guard 4's and Fox will guard some 5s. That's why I like the UND dude as a pair. We will see what happens, but then again many on this board liked Freeman a lot more than I ever did.

So according to that 247 portal, there are only 9 uncommitted centers available, two of which are former Gophers, and I don’t think Martice Mitchell is truly a center

I would have rather Mitchell than Freeman and Mitchell would probably complement Fox better. I def agree with you on the UND guy. Would have been a great fit with Parker. Parker will probably be our 5 man regardless

I'm just quoting what Marcus Fuller said in his article in the Star-Tribune from yesterday. I'm not paying to get back to the article, but he said...

"The Gophers, who have 6 open scholarships, reportedly have talked to Vanderbilt's Dylan Disu, Oklahoma's Kur Kuath and Texas A&M's Emmanuel Miller." Maybe the rules for graduates are different, I don't know...but I trust Marcus Fuller more than guys who are posting on a GopherHole Messageboard.
I urge you to count for yourself. Both CoMn and I laid it out, chapter and verse.

I have seen nothing where a team gets extra scholarships so I believe all players that are on scholarship count towards that 13. Johnson would count towards that. Willis counts towards that. They all count, unless somebody has seen specific information stating otherwise?

Almost all the "remaining centers" on the transfer portal have no impact or playing time on there previous teams..I have seen no offers from the Gophers for any of the 9-players...

Looked at Yu's highlight reel and came away somewhat impressed by his shooting stroke, footwork and shot blocking ability. Whether we want to invest 4 years on this guy is another question since he may be viewed as a project (Konate, Gaston) by many. He already looks farther along than Freeman so I'd be inclined to take a shot.

Yes, I know that everyone looks impressive on a highlight reel.

I have the same count. I think we still want the 2 A&M transfers. If that comes through, we would have 2 remaining.
'manderson' indicated in post #1035 that Brandon Johnson would qualify for the Covid 'extra year'. I believe I've heard that before and I'll take it as true. So, even if we manage to keep Johnson, we would still have 2 spots... Bring back our hometown kid, Steffon Mitchell!

For sure the A & M kids. And Mitchell I agree I'm in.

So Johnson for sure does not count towards team scholarships? I know he himself gets the extra year, I was just thinking that still would count towards the team scholarship count?

Looking at these articles it looks like Manderson has it right. I'm wondering if all of the should have been seniors last year don't count towards the team scholarships? Because then Fuller may be right.

Johnson wouldn't count towards the 13 scholarship limit. I also think Freeman, Mitchell, and Williams will be here or at any other P6 program this year.

I quoted what Marcus Fuller said in his article in the Star-Tribune yesterday. Ask him how he came up with 6 open scholarships. I don't know how they work their scholarships. Maybe some of those guys don't need scholarships.....maybe some of them aren't counting....maybe Marcus Fuller is wrong....I don't know. I'm just reporting what he wrote yesterday.

I don't think Fuller is getting his information by reading press releases from the NCAA....I'm sure he is talking to the Gopher coaching staff.

They have 9 guys committed not counting Johnson though. I've seen nothing indicating they are being allowed 15 scholarships. Perhaps 2 of the current 9 haven't officially signed or something.

So your saying Freeman doesn't fit the new "culture"? Why?
What is the new "culture"? What is different from the previous "culture"?

y'all trying to say why your scholarship count is right right now

heck, just bring adam trapp out of retirement. gain an inch. Seems the Hardrockers didn't wear him out

For players who hold over for a fifth year of eligibility, they supposedly are exempt and don't count toward the 13 scholarship maximum. I remember reading this after the extra year of eligibility was granted to players playing this year. However, there is no requirement for a school to have these extra scholarships. Frankly, I don't see why one would want more than 13 scholarships anyway. You're just adding more bench time.

I don't think this team needs more than 13 scholarships and I expect in the end that's all they'll have. Maybe the coach recruits 3 more players and leaves one open for Johnson if he decides to return. Maybe they'll only have 12 in the end. As I recall, Pitino had a couple of years where he gave the 13th scholarship to a walk on.

Hes slow, cannot shoot, and was a very average defender. I'm guessing that's why he wouldn't fit, but I don't know for 100 percent. We can't have him and Parker Fox together on the floor for sure. I'm guessing the new culture is more defensive oriented as well. Freeman seemed like a good kid, but I just didn't find him to be valuable or even that serviceable personally.

Well, for FB, with the 'covid' year, teams are allowed to exceed the normal scholarship limits, and it's up to each school to decide how many scholarships they want to pay for. Gophers will be at least 10 over the limit - other schools will have more.

So, if it's the same for hoops, any player doing a 'covid' year would be one of those extra players. I think the real question is how many scholarships the U is willing to fund.

That an interesting take--I'm far from a basketball expert, but I remember being quite impressed with the on-ball post defense he played against some of the better bigs in conference this year. Maybe it was just lucky bounces in a small-ish sample size.
