All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Gophers need to add a PURE SHOOTER! If he is the next, Minnesota schooled Kobe, welcome my friend!

Do you take the first of Eubanks / Piper / Gueye / Mahmoud that is willing to commit? Or is there a pecking order and one or more of these are conditional offers? I'm not predicting all four are willing to come here. Just curious.

Two days ago we picked up a crystal ball prediction. One of the guys flipped from Washington to us.

per Sid:

• Gophers coach Richard Pitino had 6-10 Senegal-born Abdoulaye Gueye, who is playing in Alabama, and Dujuan Piper of Seattle at the Indiana game on Saturday. Piper has offers from a number of schools, including Southern California, Washington and Washington State. Gueye has offers from Auburn, Texas Tech, Memphis and Tennessee.

per Marcus:

Recruits visit

The Gophers hosted two recruits on official visits: Seattle Rainier Beach wing Djuan Piper and Central Park Christian (Ala.) big man Abdoulaye "A.D." Gueye.

Piper, an ESPN.com four-star prospect, is being recruited most heavily by Washington, Gonzaga, Minnesota and Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-10, 205-pound Gueye, a native of Senegal, has scholarship offers from Auburn, Mississippi State and Alabama-Birmingham.

Apologies if this has been posted, but it's an article on AD Gueye that includes the only video of him that I've been able to find:

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2013/11/basketball_a-list_central_park.html

The kid has only been playing basketball since he was 14, so he's only *4 years in to his development, so keep that in mind when you consider his room for growth (the * is because there's a fairly weird point in the video where the interviewer asks him how old he is and Gueye has a weird pause before saying 18). Gueye is really thin and needs to add a lot of strength, but the form/release of his shot is amazingly fluid considering his size and limited time playing basketball. He's definitely a "4" and not a "5" for Pitino and would seem like a kid that would red shirt. One important note is that he's staying with a host family in Birmingham and that host family happens to include the assistant softball coach at UAB. For that reason alone I could see UAB being much stronger competition for Gueye than it would appear on paper.

Interesting prospect. I'd probably rank him behind Mahmoud, Piper, and Kobe though.

Matt Gravett is the guy that switched to Minnesota is also the guy who had Mahmoud to Minnesota (and has since switched his prediction to "cloudy" on Mahmoud). He runs a site called the Recruit Insider and is also somehow affiliated with the Gopher247 site.

It's interesting (at least I find it interesting) that our master Twitter recruiter, Josh Martin, hasn't Tweeted anything to Djuan, his fellow Washingtonian, to join him at the U. There were a couple RTs from last night but no Tweets specifically directed to Piper. You'd think Josh would be pushing hard for a 4* wing from his home state to be his teammate next year.

Maybe they just actually talk to each other?

He tweeted at him a couple weeks ago when Djuan popped up on our radar.

Not only was there an awkward pause when asked his age, but the numbers simply don't add up. If he was 14 in 2008, wouldn't he at least be 19 now?

His video reminds me of that guy that we supposedly offered a few years ago. Was it dan something or other?

Respectfully, am I missing something? Does it matter? It's not like he's trying to make an under-13 little league team.

Yeah, the age thing really only comes into play if he is going to enter the draft at some point. Otherwise it can be an advantage to have an older guy on the team.

There is finally video of Anas Osama Mahoud and yeah..I WANT HIM!!!!

Good find GuyFawkes. Dude looks the part. Definitely my first choice among the 4 guys we are most actively pursuing right now. This will probably sound crazy, but I'd put him in the same class as the Big 3. You don't get a lot of opportunities to bring in 7'2 guys with his athleticism and level of skill.
