All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Pat Blake, head coach of Chipola is a friend of my family. He has connections to the Pitinos, as he worked for Rick at Louisville.

Interesting, I had wondered if we were interested in him but never heard anything that suggested we were.

We are developing some new pipelines. Graham played at Arlington Country Day, which is where Nate Mason plays.

Dajuan Piper (Black #24) led Rainier Beach with 17 points as they beat Franklin 77-66 on February 1, 2013 to end the regular season on an 11 game winning streak. Shaqquon Aaron (#35) added 14 in the win. Patrick Ball (White #5) had 21 and Arell Hennings (#2) had 11 in the loss for Franklinx

Before he cut down his list, Piper had offers from Boston College, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Oregon, Richmond, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, and Illinois State.
He is ranked as a 4-star and Top 125 overall recruit by ESPN (about #122), and the #177 recruit by 247, along with a 3-star ranking by Rivals. This is good for a player who is regarded as still raw and on a significant upward trend in his playing.
Big time offers along for what would seem to be a top 150 (3-4 star) recruit at a position of need who only seems to be getting better and better? I hope we can land him!

Would be a terrific spring signing. Glad Josh is recruiting him.

That game against Indiana on the 8th sure looks important now....not only to this year's team but beyond, assuming Piper takes the visit and is in the building.

Espn has him listed as 7'2 190 is that even humanly possible? Here are some quotes on his game

"Those who have already seen him report back that his seven-foot size is legit and that he is a very skilled player. He can face the basket and shoot, handles the ball well and has a good overall feel for the game. However, he is lacking in strength and is still adjusting to hoops in the States."

"Anas Osama, West Oaks’ prized 7-foot-1 Egyptian prospect, played a limited role in his first game since a November knee injury. He blocked four shots but was held to seven points.

Osama did show flashes of the skill set that makes him an intriguing prospect who has gotten long looks from Louisville, Florida and UCF, among others, since arriving in Orlando this year.

Early on, he reached over a Lake Minneola player without fouling to snag an offensive rebound and then effortlessly bounced again to dunk. Moments later he grabbed another offensive board, passed away and relocated to the corner, where he was open for a fluid 3-point shot that he softly buried. Two minutes later Osama blocked a shot and collected the rebound before his feet hit the floor."

It looks like he unofficially visited Kentucky as well, so this kid must have some raw talent.

Mahmoud is a very interesting prospect. Moved here from Egypt about a half a year ago. Offers from Louisville, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Dayton, NC State, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, and major interest from Kentucky.
He's 7-1, only 210 lbs, and is a Power Forward, not a center. Very skinny, but is supposed to be extremely skilled for his height, and can step out.

I think this is a type of guy you want, and can be similar to an Embiid or Gorgui to a different/lesser extent. He's much more skilled than those two, but is similar in being a big raw center coming out of Africa who will be a bit of a project, but has major upside!

*Imagine adding 25 lbs of muscle onto this dude and developing his skill set while in college to create a beast of a PF/C who is 7-1/230 lbs and has the a great offensive touch. After adding that muscle on, there's no reason he shouldn't be an above-average rebounder in college either.

egyptian you say...well lets all pray for record high temps during his visit in mid February, and by record high I mean highest ever recorded on any day in minnesota history

Cue the eating-and-putting-on-weight montage.

Wonder if he would redshirt.

I would redshirt him, from what I have read, he seems extremely raw, besides we have Mo and EE next year, think it would be best if took a year to work with pitino and staff in developing his game and built his body, and learn from guys like Mo and EE. This of course if he commits to minnesota.

and what if one of EE or Mo gets injured next year? You think Buggs would be ready? Or are you confident enough in Josh Martin that you think he can play some 5?

How is it any different than the situation we're in this year? What if Mo or EE gets injured this year? (fingers crossed they don't) Same thing. We then play 2 PFs when EE is on the bench.

+1, beat me to it

Yeah, our front court is going to be even deeper next year since we'll be adding Martin and return everyone else. If Mo or EE got hurt we'd still have Martin, Oto, and King to help out. We've gone stretches this year with Oto and King at the 4 and 5 and it hasn't been an absolute disaster. Then of course the wildcard would be Buggs who could also help out. Unless this Mahmoud dude is really legit (he might be, lots of good schools are in on him), I think it would be really beneficial to redshirt him.

My point is that this isn't an ideal situation. Can't see them redshirting him (if we get him) even though he is very raw. I also don't like the idea of not having a 5 without any experience in this conference.

How much "experience" will he actually gain by racking up DNP's throughout the conference schedule? From the sound of it he wouldn't play over EE, Mo, Martin, King, or Oto and possibly even Buggs. Unless we had a slew of injuries, he wouldn't see the court outside of a blow out.

yeah, the kid will struggle to see the court over mo or EE, why waste a year to see him only play in garbage time
