All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Per his 247sports player page, the Gophers have offered 4-star SG Riley LaChance today. Could be coincidence, but I wonder if this is a sign that Macura did indeed turn them down. It could also be a reaction to Tum Tum visiting MSU. I don't know a whole lot about LaChance, whether he's more of a PG or someone who plays off the ball.

Think it has more to do with Tum Tum.

Yep, recruiting musical chairs. I just hope the Gophers aren't the last team standing. Would prefer Tum Tum, but Lachance has one of the best jumpshots in the class. Tum Tum would be the better fit if Pitino is able to play uptempo in the B1G, but tgere is always room for good jump shooters.

I guess one bright side to this is if Ullis would have picked MSU, Kentucky probably would have been the one to offer Tum Tum. I like our chances against MSU a little more.

I have no doubt J.P. turned us down. I don't see him as a program changer, but then again he's the type who would fit almost any program.

Go Gophers!!

I don't know much about Lachance. Does he really have an IU offer?

Holy crap, Illinois is getting the recruiting class we were dreaming of.

John Groce's second out of state Rivals top 40 recruit in the last two weeks. Pretty jealous of them right now. They seem to still be in the running for Cliff Alexander as well. They could potentially have the best 2014 recruiting class in the conference.

Riley is a very skilled player, but he's under-sized and not terribly athletic. He plays mostly PG for his HS team (Brookfield Central) and AAU team (Ray Allen Select), but he's an excellent shooter off the ball. Defensively, I think he could really struggle at the Big 10 level, as he's probably 6'1". Beyond the lack of size and athleticism, he's a kid who just knows how to play and is a winner. Personally, I think he's a bit of stretch for the Big 10, but Pitino and his staff certainly know a whole lot more about what they're looking for than I do.

Josh Martin

@JoshMartin_206 , Bothell, WA is scheduled for an official visit on 9/20. He's 6'8" 225lbs
Has officials scheduled with: Florida St. 9/14 and Oklahoma St 9/27
Twitter: @JoshMartin_206
Strengths:
Martin possesses a terrific frame with long arms and he's an outstanding athlete. He runs very well and can finish with a thunderous dunk at the other end. He can step out and knock down the 18-foot jump shot with regularity and he gets good lift on it.

First time on GopherHole so don't beat me up to bad if I say something stupid.... :D

Josh just landed in Tallahassee, lets hope they don't impress

Why the he11 is Snider going to Illinois out of all his other options? Puzzling...

I'd agree with UWOle's comments; I think a big choice for Lachance is "do I want to play for a team with a bigger 'name' or do I want to be a bigger piece of a (potentially very good) MM?"

Absolutely the type of kid who could play for a mid major that goes up against a top-25 team and leaves all their fans saying, "what the hell was that? That kid ate us for dinner."

Competitor, likes to take on the big boys. HM?... physical traits say 'probably no', but offensive skills and competitiveness say 'ok, might do just fine'...

Can't help but notice his dad coaching him from the bench.. 1) can be loud and animated.. 2) their faces leave no doubt that they are related. Same dude, different ages.

Riley's one of those kids that the more you see, the tougher he is to deny (that's he's a very good player).

Groce's a good recruiter and there are a number of other kids in Illinois' 2013 and 2014 classes who can really play (e.g. Leron Black, Malcolm Hill and Kendrick Nunn are all top 50 guys). With a good deal of in-state talent in 2015, Illinois could be back near the top of the Big 10 soon.

LaChance seems to be a guy that opinions very greatly on. During the Tyus/Reid vs Bonzie Colson game on ESPNU this Summer, one of the analysts raved about LaChance as a guy who was moving up lists (Tum Tum was also mentioned). Rivals lists a visit for LaChance to Michigan State this weekend, but I don't know if that's accurate. On Twitter, Jerry Meyer liked someones comparison of LaChance to Jordan Hulls.

I am in the camp that thinks LaChance is not being recruited due to Nairn visiting MSU, but to fill a shooting role on the team. I am always skeptical of a kid out of Wisconsin that doesn't have a UW or Marquette offer. That said, he's still ranked 147 by Rivals and has offers from Baylor, Vanderbilt, and OK State(according to 247).

Talked to a buddy of mine that is from brookfield central and is involved with their program and he confirmed that lachance is visiting msu this weeend. In regards to his skill. Ive been watching this kid and hearing about him from my buddy for a few years now and what both of us always assumed was that he just wasnt athletic enough to play for a high major. Love the hulls comparision though and he might be the best shooter in the class. Alright maybe not best but the kid can score at will

If you were talking about Jordan Hulls in high school and Lachance in high school, absolutely. You'd say a lot of the very same things.

However, projecting to college I see them as a bit different especially in the amount of time the ball is in their hands. Lachance projects to have heavier usage than Hulls - and potentially significantly higher depending on level/roster situation/etc.

Hulls probably averaged a usage rate of 16-17% and I don't think he ever even reached 20% shooting. Tremendous 3FG shooter in college. I'd project Lachance (and just about anyone) to not shoot as well in college as Hulls did, but expect he'd be a bigger part of his team's offense.

Good HS comparison, but I think Lachance will look a bit different in college.

Groce is a very good recruiter and now he has been there a season, etc. While I am hopeful that we will land a couple nice players this recruiting season, I think Pitino will put together a top class next year as he has more than 9 months to convince the best players to some here..

LaChance could end up being the next Nate Wolters or Jordan Hulls (both 3* guards in HS, skilled players thought to be not "athletic enough" to excel at a HM), or he could end up being the next Isiah Dahlman. Hard to say, but if he's tough and a hard worker, I'm all for taking a chance on him. Besides, the state of Wisconsin definitely owes us a few. Jordan Taylor was a 3* in HS not heavily recruited by his home state. Maybe this is our payback.

LaChance is a an ESPN Top 100 recruit. I think he might be a little better than you guys are giving him credit for.

I was thinking the exact same things. I like the idea of taking a flyer on these types of players.

Who will get a verbal commitment for 2014 first, Richard Pitino or Tom Izzo?

This article hits home.

CBS: Point guard dominoes: pickings are slim for schools in need

The biggest name with a need for a point guard is Michigan State, which struck out with Snider on Thursday – and is also planning to miss on Ulis when he decides on Friday. Next up for the Spartans seems to be Lourawls Nairn, who is taking an official visit to East Lansing this weekend. Minnesota, Indiana and others are also in the mix for “Tum Tum.” If Michigan State was to miss out on Nairn, Tom Izzo would be in serious trouble. Keith Appling is gone after the 2013-14 season, so he needs someone.

After the Spartans, there's Connecticut, which has also missed out on its main point guard targets. This week wasn't good for the Huskies, who saw Devin Watson go to Oregon State and Snider commit to Illinois before a scheduled in-home visit with UConn head coach Kevin Ollie. It seems like the next option for Ollie is junior college transfer Jeff Newberry. The second-year head coach went to see Newberry on Thursday, and the Huskies are on Newberry's list of five, which also includes: LSU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

There are a couple of options out there for teams in major need, though. Alex Robinson is the best non-Tyus Jones point guard left on the board, and he's officially visiting Texas A&M this weekend. He's already taken an official trip to Vanderbilt, and Memphis, Pittsburgh, TCU and Florida State are also on his list. Expect his phone to blow up.

Junior college prospect Josh Gray might be the most coveted guard in the JC ranks. He's officially visiting Florida State this weekend, and the Seminoles could make an effort to close the deal early.
