2025 Transfer Portal Watch

The quibble I have with this is that even though MN may be less flush with resources than others in the league, I don't think that means you can't compete on the court (and the reverse is true, too - Indiana this year is a great example). Does it make it harder? Yep. But that's why you hire a guy who has proven he can mold a team into more than the sum of its parts. These kinds of teams have a lower ceiling than the big spenders, but those teams don't always come close to their ceiling either.
The people harping about not having the resources to compete don't really believe it. They are all just Ben apologists that have morphed into weird nihilists where "it doesn't really matter anymore because of NIL" - because if Ben couldn't be successful here, it's pointless.

Of course you're point is 100% correct. We also can build interest by having a decent team which could then lead to more NIL resources. Everyone else gets it. It's just a handful of former CBJ apologists that are still apologizing for him in the post-CBJ world.

Do you want to bet that the Gophers will be predicted to finish dead last in the Big Ten again? Do you want to bet that the Gophers will be fighting to make the B1G tournament again next season? No one is apologizing for CBJ, I don't care that he was fired because it clearly wasn't working.

Imagine if $1 from every ticket sale went into the NIL fund of the sport the tickets are purchased for. People are paying to see those kids play.. add that on top of the NIL contracts they already got.

Just be good and money will follow.

I'd take that bet. Penn State will be projected to finish last in the Big Ten.

I will happily bet you on that. They return 10 players and have 2 top 100 players coming in. We return 2 and have 3 players committed. They have to add 3 players and we have to build a roster on a budget.

Next year? Yeah, I have no delusions that it's a quick fix for now. You do care that CBJ was fired, it's why you're pretending that it's a lost cause for anyone.

Lets make a real bet. I bet that Niko will win more than 27.8% of his Big Ten games. I'll bet Niko will be considerably better than Ben Johnson - we can negotiate on those exact details.

I have 25 years of data and 4 fired coaches that it's a lost cause without substantial change.

I'm going to root for the team but I will bet you on the success that Niko has here.

I'm certainly not going to bet that the Gophers will finish above PSU at this point but I don't know where you are getting your numbers. Five of their top 8 players in terms of minutes per game are out of eligibility and they lost 4 players to the transfer portal (although 3 of them barely played at all). I agree that their entering freshman class looks like it could be pretty decent and they have more coming back than we do.

Pass, but a good St.Thomas caliber player

I wouldn't mind getting his teammate from high school, Collin Mulholland, who will be playing for Chattanooga in tonight's NIT championship game. I don't see him as an initial starter but I think he could be a good rotational player. He does a number of things and he moves around the court a lot during the games.

Twin towers in high school, hard to guard

That'd be just short of an extra $170,000 NIL money for the Gophers if we use 2024-25 attendance numbers.

Try again

That’s why *deep breath,* you build a good, entertaining team that actually sells tickets.

Multiply by ten and double the attendance and you will be talking.

That's seriously his name? I don't think I could take him serious. Like an actor that only did comedies and now is in a serious role.
Took this from his Valpo bio. Looks like mom and dad were having some fun with middle names, has a brother that goes by Always Wright...... :)

Personal: Born in Durango, Mexico before moving to Carthage, Mo. at age 2... His brother Always Wright is a member of the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball program... His father Joe played at Kansas State University from 1984-1986 and went on to play professionally overseas. He holds the single-season scoring record for his team in Iceland after averaging 46.6 points per game in 1992-93... Mother Karina is a school teacher... Legal full name is Andre All Wright Vargas, but he goes by All Wright... Loves food and said the coaching staff showed him a lot of great places to eat in Valparaiso... Interested in pursuing either finance or aviation

-Side note - I don't care what league it is - dad averaging 46.6 points a game is unreal.....granted it was in Iceland....but still.....

Just looking at those statistics, the team lost in the turnover battle. 10 giveaways vs 6 takeaways. The difference of 4 with the statistical odds of scoring on those plays exceeds the difference in the point differential. If Ben had cut the margin of turnovers, his teams might have won more than they lost. But watching the games, his teams seemed less engaged on average than engaged. Many of the players went through the motions and were simply not motivated. Most of those players were 1 and done transfer portal hires.

Just to add on to this. Arguing that a team returning players that finished 2nd to last, isn't quite the argument Johnnyboy is going for. For projections (which mean nothing by the way), "experts" just base it off what coaches have done before. There is no truly good way to do a mass ranking with all of the player and coach movements.
