2025 Transfer Portal Watch

I will happily bet you on that. They return 10 players and have 2 top 100 players coming in. We return 2 and have 3 players committed. They have to add 3 players and we have to build a roster on a budget.
How does PSU sign the #40 player in the country??? SMH

Just looking at those statistics, the team lost in the turnover battle. 10 giveaways vs 6 takeaways. The difference of 4 with the statistical odds of scoring on those plays exceeds the difference in the point differential. If Ben had cut the margin of turnovers, his teams might have won more than they lost. But watching the games, his teams seemed less engaged on average than engaged. Many of the players went through the motions and were simply not motivated. Most of those players were 1 and done transfer portal hires.
Makes me wonder about what the gophs did during practice. One step further - I wonder what Thorson was doing.

Was Thorson in charge of the defensive scheme? It probably doesn't matter. Am I the only one who saw a level of disengagement in player performance? Just checking if is just my perception or if others agree with the premise.

On offense, frequently they appeared to be ‘winging it’. Made it tough to watch in person cuz you could see em making the effort.

He's been haunted by McKinley for years and finally go it Wright.
If only they would have taken McKinley Wright over Jelly. It's the little things like that that can make or break the level of success a coach has at Minnesota. We're not going to get the can't miss 5 star. There have been plenty of lower rated players that have been willing to play here and we pass for whatever reason and that defines the coach. Hopefully Medved has a better eye for that stuff.

Regarding the prediction of last place or missing the BTT, a lot has to shake out, of course. But I did want to comment on the parallel with Washington. They hired a promising MWC coach last year, got one huge portaler to follow him in Osobor (who I'd argue was a better get than any potential CSU trans) and then some miscellaneous portal parts. They were picked to finish outside the BTT qualifying zone and did. But, everyone expects them to be on an upward trajectory (and they have a good recruiting class coming in.

I say all this, because MN next year may end up a bit like Washington did this year. The fanbase needs to be patient

Well. I have to disagree and not because I want to. I didn't see the effort until the season was nearly gone. Suddenly, everything looked competitive, in a desperate kind of way as if the players suddenly realized that the record hung around their necks and theirs alone. Pride took over. It was as if they suddenly remembered how the game is played. This is a group of players that I will deliberately forget about.

One more year of embrace the suck!

Hate to say it, but seemed as those players had a tough time trusting the coach

Yes interesting indeed, only 60% FT shooter, never shoots the long ball. All 6 of games scoring in double figures came after 1/28, so could have figured something out there. Looks like his minutes went way up around that time and he also had two double-doubles and blocks went up

I didn't really care one way or another if kept Thorson but it's hard to scheme a lack of talent and it's nearly impossible to defend when your guards have zero chance of keeping anyone in front of them.

That isn't to cut Thorson any slack, it's hard to scheme a great defense with the pieces we had.

His minutes might have gone up around that time because of the injury to Jayden Quaintance

The 7 foot Arizona St guy seems like...The coaches in a meeting...Oh hey, you know we need a tall guy. Here's one! He's seven feet tall.....Okay, good....let's get 'em.
Weeks later...Hey, that 7 foot guy we gave $500k to....can he play at all??

Really? You think coaches are that dumb? I trust Niko and coaches to do their homework. It's not like your fantasy football league where guys join without a clue.

There's honestly a chance Pitino is still here if he took McKinley over Jelly. Wild

Will be interesting to see how he does. Virginia fans are certainly not too bummed he left. From what it seems, he has elite court vision but just plays super slow, old school Wisconsin model slow.
It'll depend on how well he's able to move his feet on defense.
