2024 MN High School Football thread

Section 2 in 5A is just insanely deep - Chaska is the #5 seed and they've beaten Mankato East and St. Thomas.

Coaches in 2AAAAA put Mankato West and East on same side of the bracket as 2/3 seeds. Chanhassen is #1. East beat Chanhassen, West beat East and Chanhassen beat West.

East was 6-2
West 5-3
Chanhassen 5-3

West and Chanhassen had tougher schedules

QRF has West, East, Chanhassen.

just for fun I looked up the scores.

in this case - Chanhassen beat West by 9 points. East beat Chan by 24 pts. West beat East by 21 pts.

so, it's possible that Chan just had a bad night vs East. Or that, for whatever reasons, East was able to exploit some matchups vs Chan but did not have the same advantages vs West.

but, as I always try to remind myself - we're talking about 16-, 17- and 18-year old kids here. wacky stuff can happen. kids can have good nights and/or bad nights.

in the end, it comes down to this - which team can put two good games back-to-back? that's what makes this time of the year so much fun for fans.

It's only a 5 team Section, so all 3 will get a Bye.

Chan plays the winner of Chaska @ Waconia.

6A bracket is out. Maple Grove #1 and likely Eden Prairie in second round.

Maple Groves region looks brutal. Lakeville North's looks really soft and could probably have any number of teams come out of that one.

Do you have some sort of beef with Lakeville North? You haven’t had anything good to say about them for the past month and since that’s my school, I thought I’d ask.

Nobody likes Lakeville North!

J/K I know nothing about them.

Since you can’t play your section for two rounds it creates some issues in true seeding. Maple Grove, Eden Prairie and Edina all in the same bracket is tough but you have to win the games. Eagan is the 2 seed and lost to Edina week 1.

North also got a bad draw potential playing a team that just crushed them last in East Ridge.

Interesting that Shakopee is the #2 team in their region. Mnfootballhub has them as the #2 team in the state overall. Be pissed if I were mounds view

8AAAA is a pretty wild section. Undefeated Becker at 1, 6-2 Rocori (losses to Becker and DL) at 2, and Princeton is 8-0 at the 3 spot. DL appears to be solid at 5-3 as well with the nice win over Rocori and their losses were to teams with a combined record of 20-4.

I mean I have been pretty clear that my attachment is to Rosemount so on principal I'm not going to be a big fan of either Lakeville North or South :)

But in regards to my shots at North this year it is mainly because I truly don't believe they deserved the #1 ranking based mostly on their weak schedule. This is one of the worst teams Rosemount has had in years and they were right there with North for the entire game.

But hey....if they can get past East Ridge they could win their bracket and end up in the final 4. But will be shocked if anyone from the South is in the mix for the title this year.

After looking at the records and schedules I’m pretty dumbfounded as to why mounds view is ranked above Shakopee

Shakopee coach pretty upset about it. Thought they should #1 with a loss to Minnetonka and Minnetonka with 2 losses.

Shakopee crushed EP and Minnetonka lost to EP.

They simply went with H2H.

Rankings don’t mean anything. It’s how you seed in your section. Shakopee is a two seed and Mounds View a one seed.

Forest Lake is the two seed from Mounds Views section and lost to Mounds View, but was ranked higher in the polls this week.

Who is in each of their sections

for those wondering about 6a seeding
Section record

North
1 maple grove 7-0
2 anoka 5-2
3 Blaine 5-2
4 centennial 3-4
5 Champlin park 3-4
6 st Michael Albertville 3-4
7 osseo 2-5
8 coon rapids 0-7

East
1 Moundsview 5-1
2 forest lake. 5-1
3 Stillwater 4-2
4 east ridge 3-3
5 Woodbury 2-4
6 white bear lake 2-4
7 Roseville 1-2
8 park 0-3

South
1 L North 6-0
2 Eagan 5-1
3 L south 4-2
4 farmington 3-3
5 mayo 2-4
6 rosemount 1-5
7 Eastview 1-2
8 Burnsville 0-3

West
1 Tonka 5-1
2 shakopee 5-1
3 Edina 4-2
4 Eden prairie 3-3
5 prior lake 2-4
6 wayzata 2-4
7 Buffalo 1-2
8 Hopkins 0-3

Seems as though seeding criteria was
1) section standings
2) head to head to break tiebreakers
3) one exception is 4-5-6 in the north they used overall record to break 3 way tie where they all beat each other (logical to me)…but then I was surprised they didn’t use head to head to make STMA 5 and CP 6.
The only seed that surprised me was 5-6 in the north I would’ve guessed flipped.

Shakopee and Minnetonka have same section record and tonka beat them head to head. Shakopee played 1-7 rosemount instead of 8-0 maple grove…that doesn’t mean they should jump a team that beat them and had same record within the section IMO

I would have shakopee rated #2 in the state because I think shakopee would win a rematch with Tonka. But Tonka beat them, so it seems pretty logical to seed them the 1 and shako the 2.

Didn’t know that – – makes sense. I still say if Vraa had went to the U he would’ve finished his career with at least 100 catches. Potentially Brewster’s biggest mistake in a litany of mistakes.

Sums it all up. Thanks.

I think Champlin was better down the stretch and got players back. They lost to STMA 14-7 on two STMA defensive TD’s and lost Blaine on a last play 4th down and goal. I believe North does a coaches vote.

I agree on Shakopee. They lost to Minnetonka coming off a high of beating EP.

For sure I think Champlin is better than STMA at this point. Just surprised they didn’t use the head to head

STMA lost to osseo recently I think too

I’ve heard rumors the relief schedule may be going away. But I actually think it really served its purpose and the last two years of scheduling is the cleanest and fairest there has been since district scheduling came about.

I heard that too with the likes of Moorhead, Rogers and Andover coming into 6A. I also heard that Park, Osseo, Hopkins, Coon Rapids and others may be seeking it though.

Should have the 8 team district be relief with one crossover game.

section placement will be interesting with potential NW teams moving to 6A.

Wonder if they just go straight 4 sections and section play with one crossover game.

Maple Grove is lobbying to be in same section with other west powers.

I have not heard that about maple grove

Assuming Burnsville moves down.
Assuming that moves prior lake to south section. New team either joins north or west. If it joins north, maple grove slides west.

Also a chance mayo slides down which would make things a lot more interesting

They’re moving conferences but it would not affect football schedule unless they are switched to that section as well.

I didn't take maroon's post to imply that Hormel recruited families for athletics but for employment purposes. but I can see how you could have interpreted that. Perhaps @maroonfive can clarify his comments.

I've never heard of the phenomenon you are referring, either in fact or in legend. But to the extent there is any kind of scuttlebutt about companies recruiting families for high school athletics, well - I'm fond of the saying that "there's not always a lot to see in a small town but there's plenty to hear."
Our family had friends from Austin and they said it was common knowledge around the Big 9 in the fifties and sixties. Besides the Gophers high school football and basketball were the next big thing. Patrick Reusse even talked about this when talking about the boys basketball tournament. He said why do you think Austin goes the basketball tournament every year. Hormel he said. Edgerton's Cinderella year was complete when they beat Austin in 1960. Fact, fiction, or fable the lore is out there.
