2024 MN High School Football thread

OK - if you are going to change the rules for private schools that have "too much" success, what do you do with a school like Minneota?

listed MSHSL enrollment at 159 - Class 1A starts at 151. this school is 10 kids away from qualifying for 9-man. Minneota the last three seasons - State runner-up in 2021, State Champs in 2022, State Champs in 2023, and they are the #1 seed and favorite in 2024.

so if you want to impose fairness, what do you do? force Minneota to go up to class 2A?

some programs are just better. better coaching, better athletes. a school culture that makes kids want to play football - and makes kids willing to invest the time and effort in the weight room and off-season training that helps produce a winning program.

you can't change rules or tweak rules to produce that type of culture - or force that type of culture on losing programs.

you aren’t punishing schools for having too much success. Just like you count kids who don’t have to pay school activity fees differently, you count kids who pay tuition differently. This doesn’t target anyone based on success or lack of success.

I disagree. If that’s the cutoff you leave them there. I am an advocate of consolidating one class which would move the cutoff line. They likely wouldn’t be near the top of their class anymore if we went from 7 to 6 classes.

Agree

Nobody has suggested that you can

For sure.
Catholic schools recruit. So does Minnetonka. (Minnetonka literally advertises) So do a ton of public schools.
Minnetonka recruits a huge percentage of their student body overall, not just athletes, to keep their schools full. They literally started an aviation program last year to offer things nobody else has.

Not to say they don't recruit athletes. Adrian Peterson's daughter is playing there this year, transferring from Providence Academy, even though she now lives in the Chanhassen district.

I don’t think the kids that play give two shits about any of this— It’s more of an adult – parent issue.

Nope those are real numbers. I was there. Shakopee didn't complete a pass. MG threw three INT's.
Shakopee was 10-2 and the QB was 12-34 passing on the season. 4TD’s and 4ints. 220 yards passing.

Defense and the ability to run were their strengths.

Ask Kenny Novak.

I don't have that big a problem with it. It's a thing now. Clock's not getting turned back. I don't blame a lot of these good inner city athletes heading to a private school where they are likely to get financial assistance, be in a better playing environment, and have a better chance at playing at the next level.
I do think if you have evidence of athletic scholarships at private especially Catholic schools you need to come forward with that. Not only would the arch-diocese be very interested, so would the tuition paying families. It is a pretty serious issue. And you haven’t given any specifics(odd) but you know of specific examples this would be looked into.

Correct

Minnetonka has adds in the program at orchestra hall last time I was there

I don’t think 99% of society gives two shits about any of this

So I guess it doesn’t matter?
Who cares about society that’s dumb we’re talking about games being played by kids who don’t think or care about any of this stuff they just wanna strap it on and go play the game. It’s a point of discussion because the adults get butt hurt by the whole thing when little Johnny or Jimmy gets their ass kicked.

Athletic scholarships or really good athletes that fit the profile for free tuition because of real or alleged economic situations. I have no idea what Seantrell Henderson’s economic status was, but do you think he paid a dime of tuition at CDH and or would have even if his family is or was financially able to pay the freight?

You’re the only one who seems fired up. Maybe you should consider growing up

Boy, you don't let things go. They are not athletic scholarships. It is financial assistance for families that cannot afford the tuition at the school and a good number of the students receiving the aid are also very good athletes. I cannot say whether there is a direct correlation. I am sure the archdiocese is well aware.

Some Catholic you are. You don't even know that archdiocese isn't a hyphenated word.

And to me, those kids obviously shouldn’t have a multiplier

Correct

Minnetonka has the most well-developed open-enrollment promotion program in the state. Between 20% and 25% of the Minnetonka student body doesn't reisde within the boundaries of the district. It doesn't center around athletics. There's declining enrollment in a lot of school districts and the former Minnetonka superintendent really promoted the plan to bring in kids through open enrollment to keep the wide variety of programs available in the district in place.

More than that. They’re about 1800 by neighborhood and like 3500

A couple of insults but yet no specifics.

I honestly don’t know his families economic or religious situation.

I do know that some of the kids that I know that are receiving need based scholarships aren’t athletic in the least bit.

Again I am sure some kids attend a private school because they like a particular sports program but the same thing exists in public schools.

Hmm, it is voted one of the best stadiums in the NFL year in and year out since it has been built.
The main concourse has some drawbacks, narrowing at odd spots by concessions creating logjams of people. The men's bathroom by my buddy's seats has 7 urinals and one toilet. Almost always a line out the single doorway into the concourse.

Me, I honestly could care less my kids are more than a decade and an half out of high school. My grandkids are in preschool so I don’t have a dog in this fight. I’ve just found the hand wringing here relative to the whole thing amusing.

Yeah. They are winning because they are better.
You are 100% correct.
Would all these 4a schools be winning if they played against schools with more similar resources and affluence?
Maybe.

Nobody is saying they aren’t better. You’re correct, they’re better
How are you going to judge affluence? Parents at private and public schools going to submit 1040s?

Champ games on Friday are outstanding. Four games with really good programs.

Minneota vs Springfield
TG vs Becker
Jackson vs Staples Motley
Minnetonka vs Maple Grove

What about partial financial aid?
If they pay, they get a multiplier. Perhaps you could pro rate it but if someone pays to go to school, not the same kind of kid.

Now some may say, well they only paid a little. But inflating the st Agnes aggies enrollment by 1.2 per kid that pays tuition isn’t going to move their class in 90% of sports 90% of the time.

Honestly I have no idea if it would move anybody up.

You could care less or couldn’t care less?
I can tell you could care less because here you are commenting.

The Wilfs didn't have stadium design input?
You can go through life looking for others to blame for everything you don't like or you can say:
Hey we got a problem here, let's solve it. After nine tries maybe some accountability for the MSHSL is the answer.
