2024-25 Gopher Hockey Season

81 has looked the same for like 25 games. It's not just running into good goalies.

There we go from 81. 20 on the year will be good enough from him

Away sweeps at WCHA rivals are fun
Have you adjusted your rankings in terms of team tiers yet? Because the eye test so far sure says you should. Watching umd fans stream out early two nights in a row coupled with some great Duluth weather made for a perfect hockey weekend

Not really. As of 8/28 I had this:
BC
big gap unless Leonard signs
BU/DU
tiny, almost non-existent gap
UND
UMN
UM

And now I'd say more like this:
BC
DU/BU (Eiserman domination hurts)
UMN
UND
MSU (replaces UM but under UMN/UND)

#5/5 Gophers (3-1-0) vs. UST (1-1-1)
Friday, October 25 at 5:30 at Mariucci - Fox9
Saturday, October 26 at 8:00 at the Xcel - Fox9+

A few thoughts. Early game on Friday, might be a late arriving crowd. I enjoyed the UST "home" game at the X last year but decided to go to the first Mariucci game of the year instead this time around.

Despite what some Big Ten apologists think, I think this will evolve into a solid rivalry for the fans quickly. Outside of close games, which might not happen too often (last year went to OT, though...), there are other keys to rivalries developing.
1. Visiting fans at home games or the other way around. This series allows that and the atmosphere in the X last year was solid despite a huge arena.
2. Local kids on both teams. Players that you've seen at local rinks and at the state tournament. UST has 21 Minnesotans. It used to be that UMD was second in Minnesotans. UST stole that quickly.
3. Competing over recruits: Again this may not happen for a bit but UST is going to the NCHC, getting a new arena, and is a private school in the Cities. With the way the U is trending, I think a lot of well-off parents will like to see their kids go to UST (or ND, DU, etc.) instead of the U. They'll start to get some solid players.
4. Co-workers/friends that support the other school to talk trash with. This just doesn't happen for all the Big Ten teams other than uw and maybe a Notre Damer here and there.

If you were to ask me, I'm already more excited for these games than playing OSU, PSU, and Bemidji.

As far as the games, this should be a sweep. I think Souliere might end up winning the starting job.

I just don’t see it unless 1 of 2 things

The games mean something (ie they meet postseason a few times) OR
Some bad blood occurs.

It may turn into one for a few fans who want to shit talk, but proximity alone doesn’t make a rivalry if you play 2 meaningless non conference games a year. The facilities and resources are still what they are and will be for the foreseeable future. Was in Duluth this weekend and it was overall very tame with only a few half hearted f the gophers chants. Think the only prior one that’s maintained that steam is UND because of the prior bad blood, but even that has receded quite a bit as compared to when I was in college.

With the pairwise the NC games are often more important than 2 games against, say, PSU.

Absolutely. Particularly as you’ll have far fewer teams under comparison in the records against similar opponents category so you can lose a comparison much more easily if swept

Also in general bad blood just rarely occurs against any team because the game has been cleaned up a lot. The best kids come up playing against each and with other so they rarely want to fight.

FF tickets secured in the Jameson Club level

I sell if the Gophers don't make it. Hope I get to use them.
Well club and entirety of the lower bowl was gone. Hopefully you won’t be offering to sell come April

All UST tickets on sale for $24 each. I paid $25 each with the State Fair deal, but would have liked to pay $24 and be close to the red line. Moral of the story: Wait until the last second to buy tickets these days.

Starting to get fired up for the series. Let's get a 5-1 start for the first time in a non-Covid schedule since 2014-15.

Gophers outclass and smoke an awful UST team 7-1.

UND smokes BU 7-2

Pitlick gets his third GWG as Kato beats Omaha in the last minute of regulation

Rinzel and Chesley are special players and Wood is worthy of the hype so far. We have a lot of guys playing good hockey.

Almost the entire team is rolling. The PP is an issue, and they are also doing it to themselves by having 4 right handers on PP1 and 4 left handers on PP2. Makes it hard for one timers.

Snuggerud and L. Mittelstadt are the only two I can think performing under expectations. Everyone else awesome.

Rinzel looks like an All American candidate
Chesley took a nice step forward
Wood looks as advertised
Kurth might be on his way to a huge breakout year
4th line is a huge upgrade from last years group
Koster looks recovered from the knee injury that slowed him last year
Ziemer will be a star by the time he’s done wearing the M

I’m still undecided on Airey - he wasn’t bad last night by any means, but wasn’t really tested at all.

This. 100%.

Would have been so nice to have Slukynsky back there

You're going to have the same problem for many, many home conference games.
I've got big ten plus for conference games. Seems like the only games I can't see are the "road" non-conference because the home team always has some obscure streaming service they charge for.

4-1 already again. Let's get at least one more and keep the other side at one. Anything else is bonus.

Alright maybe not fair but that 5th goal needs to be from Snuggerud. Can't have him go 6 goals in his last 25 games, after having 7 goals in the four games before that.

Is this game eligible for Culver’s?
Nah, but here's something to check. Because the arena audio is complete ass at Mariucci no one could hear the Culver's announcement well, but it looked like instead of checking tickets they are using a code now. So you really don't have to be at the games... Pretty sure code is GO4SCOOPS. I'll see how that might work

Yup that code worked for carryout and wouldn't surprise me if it just works all the time as I doubt they have some entry level analyst flipping the offer code on and off at the end of every game...
