I'm guessing 2 E8's and 4 S16's in 9 seasons as a D1 coach. With the tournament being canceled in 2020, he's made half the S16's he's been a coach.

Musselman and Dutcher both represent a chance to get a coach that would otherwise be out of our league. And we've likely missed multiple chances at both. That's all. He's not perfect and not everyone likes him, I get that. I also think he would have an easier time raising NIL $$ than just about anyone else we can get.

The window has pretty much officially closed on Dutcher and if Musselman takes another job now, you can close the window on him too. Reeks of typical MN missed opportunity.

When we hired Tubby Smith, he had 16 years as a D1 coach, and had made 9 Sweet 16s (more than half). Among those Sweet 16s, he had 4 Elite 8s (to Musselman's 2) and a national championship (to Musselman's 0). By the time he was run out of town, a significant majority of the fanbase hated his guts, and said he was "old" and "worn out" (he was 61). To boot, he is possibly the nicest guy and the most upstanding gentleman - even his biggest detractors agree.

And now, some want to hire a guy who will turn 60 next season, is less accomplished, and by all accounts is a gigantic prick? So after a decade-plus of wandering through some of the shittiest and most uninspired basketball, we want to go back to the same well, only do it worse this time? If that makes sense to you, more power to you, but I can think of many, many others I'd have first. The way howeda strokes him, you'd think he has multiple NCAA and NBA titles and is holding vigil outside Coyle's office until he gives in and hires him.

We already had a coach who was "otherwise out of our league," and how did that work out? He was a half-step shy of being hung in effigy for the horrible crime of only making it to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

"That's all." I did a search for posts made by you containing the word "Musselman" and it yielded 140 results. "Muss," 60 results. So you've made at least 200 posts about him in your time on this board - a guy who never has and never will coach here. That's the part that's bewildering to me - I can understand wanting to have a better coach than the one we have now, but why the obsessive mentions? And for an AARP member jackass who has never coached in one place longer than 5 years?

I think you're overblowing the Tubby hate a bit. Whether it was due to health issues or something else, he stopped recruiting and his last two classes reflected that. The end was near with him here whether he was given another year or two or not.

I agree with you on Musselman though. He was never coming here regardless and howie/whoever else needs to get over that.

Was told Dutcher was too old and had little HC experience when I said he would be a great hire back when they canned Richard P.

I get that I’m going to be in the minority on this, but if I was an AD I wouldn’t even consider hiring Mack. I completely understand that he was a good coach at Xavier (and winning means everything to most), but that recording incident of Gaudio is one of the shadiest moves we've seen in college basketball over the last decade. Mack even edited the recording before sending it to officials to hide information that he didn't want the school to find out about. Both were in the wrong, and both are POS’ in my mind.

The Tubby hate is way overblown. I certainly didn't have any and I don't think many here did. I was indifferent when he was let go. Yes firing a coach after making the NCAA's isn't a great idea, especially if you're Minnesota. But the trend was pretty clear. The last two recruiting classes were beyond brutal. He had given up.

"Never" is almost certainly not correct. He would have come here in 2013 and was set to interview. He might have come in 2019 if the job had opened then. And he might have come now if the job had opened. He was not a realistic candidate in 2021 when Ben was hired, no. And if he goes to USC, he won't be one when we fire Ben a year from now. Hence the frustration.

I agree that 2013 was their chance, but that was their only chance and it was still a big risk at that time. That ship sailed after that and it was never coming back, even if we wanted him this year. He will continue to work better jobs in the south until he retires.

The Dutcher miss hurts bad at this point. He wanted to come here, had a clause in his contract, and we didn't hit it. Then he went to a Final 4 and a sweet 16.

I hate to make this comparison, but Dutcher seems kinda like our Bo Ryan that we didn't hit on. They did.

I’ll trust your judgement. I’m not immediately recalling the incident and would understand concern about trying to hide things from the boss. I remember Gaudio getting the boot under cloudy circumstances but didn’t recall Mack being part of it.

In fairness to dpodoll68, he doesn’t seem angry. More fixated on a hypothetical specific sex act between howeda and Mussellman. A little odd yes, but not angry.
