I think we're in a lull with the Gophers because they are waiting on a shooting guard that is currently going through the draft process. Maybe that's a specific one or maybe they feel like they have some good possibilities and it's worth waiting. I would guess that would be Hunter Jr., but other names that are less likely but have had links to the Gophers or Ben could be AJ Green and McCullar. The Gophers were in McCullar's top 5 out of HS:Kevin McCullar is in the transfer portal. A guy who is supposedly a strong defender and scored 10 points a game in the Big 12 will probably have better options than us, but he had a Minnesota offer out of high school, he’s from San Antonio, and from what I recall was family friends with Jordan Murphy, who was himself recruited by Ben Johnson.
Minnesota: “They showed me a lot of interest. Coach (Richard) Pitino and coach (Ben) Johnson, their assistant, they really want me to come in and play right away. They always come down and visit me and have always wanted me; they have a good vision for me there.”
I suspect the others guys we're looking at or speculating on (Samuels, Strong, Jones) would be backups. Maybe they don't want that role. Maybe Ben hasn't given them a committable offer. Maybe he's realizing these backup candidates might not be that much better than Carrington and Henley, so it maybe worth giving them more run to give them experience.
So if it's the draft process, we may have to wait a month plus to hear about our starting shooting guard. The deadline of June 1 is to withdraw from the draft to still be eligible for next season...
