2022 Transfer Portal Discussion

Kevin McCullar is in the transfer portal. A guy who is supposedly a strong defender and scored 10 points a game in the Big 12 will probably have better options than us, but he had a Minnesota offer out of high school, he’s from San Antonio, and from what I recall was family friends with Jordan Murphy, who was himself recruited by Ben Johnson.

I think we're in a lull with the Gophers because they are waiting on a shooting guard that is currently going through the draft process. Maybe that's a specific one or maybe they feel like they have some good possibilities and it's worth waiting. I would guess that would be Hunter Jr., but other names that are less likely but have had links to the Gophers or Ben could be AJ Green and McCullar. The Gophers were in McCullar's top 5 out of HS:

Minnesota: “They showed me a lot of interest. Coach (Richard) Pitino and coach (Ben) Johnson, their assistant, they really want me to come in and play right away. They always come down and visit me and have always wanted me; they have a good vision for me there.”

I suspect the others guys we're looking at or speculating on (Samuels, Strong, Jones) would be backups. Maybe they don't want that role. Maybe Ben hasn't given them a committable offer. Maybe he's realizing these backup candidates might not be that much better than Carrington and Henley, so it maybe worth giving them more run to give them experience.

So if it's the draft process, we may have to wait a month plus to hear about our starting shooting guard. The deadline of June 1 is to withdraw from the draft to still be eligible for next season...

Walton has to enter the portal by tomorrow or he won't be eligible next year if he transfers. It looks like a pro somewhere or UNC.

I can't imagine why we would want Jones to be a backup. A guy who has a career 62% True Shooting Percentage should get at least 8 shots per game (and some free throws) for a team like ours. Last season, this team had 3 good outside shooters (Willis, Battle, and Stephens). Putting aside the freshmen on this team, I see only Battle and perhaps Garcia but his perimeter shots likely will be more limited.

If it has to do with educational goals or maybe his goal is to coach and feels it will help him later then fine, otherwise riding the bench is on par with an 8 year old having to kiss your sister, from a competitors perspective there is no satisfaction riding coattails to a championship, none.
These transfer portal takes are confusing to me. We want kids to not want to transfer but if a kid like Kerwin chooses to stay at his school instead of transfer here for starter minutes then we think the kid is making a poor decision then a kid like the Northwestern kid decides to ride the bench at Duke instead of Northwestern then they are riding coattails.

Inconsistent fan takes on a message board?.....that never happens.... :)

Here's my thing with the Northwestern kid, if it's basketball related and he is competitive wouldn't he want to go somewhere he can contribute, if he doesn't care about basketball then why not finish his education at Northwestern with the guys he has played three years with. I can't think of a reason to transfer to Duke, it's illogical, I don't buy that play for a champion, that's worthless. It shouldn't mean anything today and certainly won't in ten years.

Didn't know about the two days for the compliance department

Players have to provide written notice (to current school) of intent to enter transfer portal by 11:59 p.m. tonight in order to be eligible for the one-time transfer waiver.

Compliance department then has two days after that to enter the player into the portal.
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanHoops) May 1, 2022

It is not at all surprising, but all of these fringe NBA guys are declaring for the draft while going into the portal. Essentially saying "I am going wherever the most $$ is". Again, good for the kid to get all the money they can but man its just straight up free agency now (even more than it used to be).

So what

Its disgusting.
It is indeed. This is short term thinking. A lot of these kids will blow their money and end up without much left, no college education and a screwed up values system, lacking in commitment and responsibility.

Gee, and that mirrors society at large.......

Why do you think these kids won't graduate college?

While there are a lot of transfers chasing the money (especially the high profile ones) that isn't the case for everyone. We get caught up as fans in the NIL concept but money isn't the sole reason a lot of these kids are switching schools.

Again, for me personally I don't care, good for the kid, just was making an observation.

The only thing I don't like is coaches/boosters poaching kids already on teams. If a kid puts his name in the portal, well then its fair game, but until that point it would be nice if people didnt tamper. If I had to guess, I would say someone from Oregon probably talked to Bucky when he was here and said hey man we can you you X I think.

I get it, at my 9 to 5 someone can call me and offer me a job for 2x my salary, nothing "wrong" about that per se, but this is no longer a normal kid/job. In pro sports the Knicks can't call Giannis and say hey just tell MIL you are leaving we will give you $100m a year and 2 days later he is a Knick. Thus why I think contracts should be the norm in college now, you want to make money, no problem, but now there will be contracts that you can't break.

Why do you think these kids won't graduate college?
Because I don't think they will. That's my opinion. If you think they will, that's ok. We can take a look at stats. 86% of D1 athletes get a degree. But 77% of D1 college basketball athletes get a degree. My belief is that as free agency progresses, less will get a degree and the failure to do so will be concentrated among those who start making cash early. When people get money before they attain maturity, most of the things that happen are bad.

NIL isn't a job.

NIL isn't a job.
NIL as a concept sure, thats not how its being used though. Thats like saying marijuana isnt a drug, its just a plant. Well sure if you just left it in the ground it is, when you roll it up its no longer being used a plant.

Why would less obtain a degree? They need to have a certain amount of credits to be eligible that keeps players on path to graduate. Most players won’t be receiving significant amount of money anyway

If they don't get significant amounts then it probably will have little affect on their path to a degree. If they do, it likely will. None of us dreamed that we would be looking at 6 figure deals for NIL and free agency a few years back so we are in the wild west here.

I am going with human nature here...the more money they make for just playing basketball, the less interested they are going to be in hitting the books for 4 straight years. Just my opinion.

I understand what you're saying but I still think this is an overreaction. It was more of a wild west a few years back compared to now. Sean Miller, Bill Self, Will Wade, etc... Have we already forgotten about the federal investigations with paying players?

Now, everyone is going to be playing the game the way the cheaters did a few years ago. That sounds great for the players right now- just be a mercenary. The long term effects of doing this won't be good.
