2013 Recruits - UPDATED 3/20: Gavin Schilling picks Michigan State

Could MN land two straight big 3's? First Chicago and then Minnesota? The great 6?

Ellis and Schliling are going to be good players, but I do not see Foster being anything than a Ingram at MN (which is not a terrible thing).

I was going to say, this year's Ingram has been great in bench minutes and one of the most improved players this year.

Yeah definitely, but I would not consider Ingram to have the potential to be part of any "big 3" or "big 6" teams. I really think Ellis is going to be a stud at the U and Tubby found a diamond in the rough with him but Foster will be more of a role player at best. Who knows though, I am no scout...

I really wish Ingram had another year. He has developed nicely and would have helped us out a lot next year.

Foster may not be having a flashy senior year like Ellis, but he was once considered one of the top recruits in the country. Over the last couple of years he's slid down the rankings and in interviews you can tell he has developed a bit of a chip on his shoulder. I could see him being a nice recruit for us.

As much as I want him to sign here. If I'm a recruit and I have the option to play for Izzo or Tubby. I'm choosing Izzo every single time.

Don't underestimate how much playing time can affect a player's decision. Michigan St. has a lot of good big men coming back and we don't.

per Doogie:

Palm Beach State Juco assistant coach Ben Servidio on his player, former Texas commitment and 6-foot-9 forward Kevin Thomas: "Minnesota offered a scholarship to Kevin Thomas back in November, but due to Minnesota's needs at forward, they also recently indicated that they offered a scholarship to a freshman small forward with the same body type as Kevin's -- long, slender and can elevate. They still send mail constantly and are still interested, but they have put him on the backburner, it seems, for the time being. Kevin's recruitment has picked up in the last few months, receiving offers from Nebraska, Oregon State, Seton Hall and Western Kentucky."

Go Gophers!!

The bad thing about bringing in a JUCO is that would put six scholarship players in that class.

The problem with Ingram is that he is another player that you don't have to guard beyond 5 feet from the basket. He has played hard, but he's not the kind of player you are going to go far with.

Ingram is what he is and that is a solid back up who plays good defense. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not if the player was a freshman coming from a JUCO which is the latest mystery player we are after. It would actually help provide some more balance and would make that class only the juco player and Ellenson.

My bad. That would help us out a lot actually.

I guess the "mystery recruit" is no mystery at all. Someone asked Doogie about it on Twitter and he said the player referred to in the quote was Alex Foster.

We've already signed Foster ...

per Sid (apparently his fact checker took the night off as we have four scholarships available and Sid forgot UCLA as one of Gavin's finalists):

The Gophers have one basketball scholarship available for next season and they would like to give it to Gavin Schilling of Findlay Prep School in Las Vegas, who has made two trips to the Gophers campus. However Schilling, who will announce his decision on where he will go to school Wednesday, is likely to go to Michigan State because his family lives close in Chicago. Villanova and Minnesota were the other schools on his final list.

Go Gophers!!

@GSchills32: I will announce my college decision tomorrow at 11 15 am west coast time.

Go Gophers!!

Can't see him picking us especially with the uncertainty surrounding Tubby's job.

Whoever the new guy is will have a lot of free schollies though.

Michigan State fans are optimistic he's going there.

With Howland and Tubby on the hotseat, it seems really unlikely he'll go anywhere but MSU. Payne and Nix will both depart after this year and that leaves a nice vacancy for minutes for Shilling to slide into. I wasn't looking forward to the 2nd coming of Shilling in Maroon and Gold. Too many bad memories of the last Shilling we had...lol

Payne is only a Junior and doubt that he would get drafted!

If he delayed his decision a week he would probably have a much better idea if Tubby is going to be here next year or not.

The fact that he's not doing so indicates that it didn't factor into his decision. So he either loves Minnesota with out without Tubby, or the more likely he's going with a school that will have their top guy for his college career.

Unless Sparty makes a Final Four run, my hunch is Payne will come back for his senior season. However, I have no doubt he'd be drafted if he came out this year. Just within this season he's improved more than any player in the Big 10, except for probably Oladipo. I think the NBA will like a 6-10 power forward who can hit a face-up jumper as well as jump out of the gym.

If Payne returns, I'd tab MSU as the team to beat in the B1G in 2013-14. That assumes Oladipo, Zeller, Burke, Thomas, and (perhaps) Hardaway all leave early. And Iowa will be a bear next season. Was really impressed in Chicago with how hard McCaffery's team plays. His guys leave it all out on the floor.

Payne's stock is climbing fast...He'd be late 1st rounder if the draft were today. If he keeps playing well and helps lead MSU to the Final 4, I think he'll be 15th or so. His shooting range has expanded since getting pummled by Dawson...Maybe Rodney should take a punch from Trev? lol

Please tell more about this Dawson ass kicking of Payne

Can't see a reason why he would pick us. Highly unlikely imo.

Seems logical that Schilling will be MSU's replacement for missing out on Jabari Parker (Duke).

A little scrum among teammates occurred before Sparty's game at Penn State. Just a little fisticuffs between on-campus roomates that resulted in a hole in the wall at the team hotel. Not a big deal. MSU actually started playing better after that happened.

At least Dawson punched his own teammate this time. A week earlier he punched Travis Carroll of Purdue in the gut after dunking on him and the league did nothing because it's Izzo.

Didn't Izzo have to boot a player a few years ago for sleeping with another teammates girlfriend? Also, Izzo helped cover up a rape allegations involving his players.

I think Izzo is a great coach, but he's not exactly providing the "family atmosphere" everyone continues to applaud him for.

I think I remember hearing something like that maybe Chris Allen or Korie Lucious.

Rumor has it, Dawson landed the only scoring blow...A right hand to the jaw of Payne. Funny thing was, after being suspended for the 1st half against PSU, Payne came out and hit 4 or 5 three's in the 2nd half and had 20 points in 17 minutes. Hence my pun about the punch and how it woke him up. Maybe Trev could punch Rodney...lol
